Multi-omics analysis reveals polyethylene microplastics-induced gill damage, metabolic disruption and immune dysregulation in Lateolabrax maculatus.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging environmental pollutants that can induce physiological toxicity in aquatic organisms. This study investigated the toxicological effects of dietary exposure to polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) on gill tissues of Lateolabrax maculatus, using diets containing 0%, 4%, and 8% (w/w) PE-MPs. Histological, transcriptomic, and biochemical analyses were performed to assess structural damage, alterations in gene expression, and changes in antioxidant and immune parameters. Histological examination revealed structural abnormalities, including bending of gill lamellae an

Injectable hydrogels based on polyethylene glycol and chitosan derivatives with wet tissue adhesion for promoting Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment healing.

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is a serious ocular emergency with a significant risk of blindness. A critical treatment objective for RRD is the sealing of retinal breaks. Retinal sealants offer a promising alternative to conventional surgery by effectively closing these breaks and potentially reducing complications. However, current sealants, such as fibrin glue, cyanoacrylate, and polyethylene glycol derivatives, suffer from limitations including weak adhesion, intraocular toxicity, and difficulty with intraocular administration, preventing their widespread use. This article reports

A multifunctional electrode interface: A hybrid hexanethiol and polyethylene glycol monolayer for concurrent anti-fouling, stability, and ultrasensitive detection of ochratoxin A.

Integrating antifouling capability, operational stability, and high sensitivity into electrochemical biosensors in a simple and cost-effective manner remains a significant challenge. Herein, we present a multifunctional biointerface based on a hybrid hexanethiol and polyethylene glycol (HT-PEG) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) that concurrently addresses these requirements. The PEG component provides excellent antifouling properties through steric exclusion and hydration effects, while also serving as a dynamic host for spontaneous immobilization of pyrene-modified DNA probes (Py-DNA) via adapti

Carboxymethyl chitosan/sodium alginate/polyethylene glycol phase-change foams with humidity-adaptive low-temperature buffering performance.

The performance deterioration of phase-change composites in humid environments severely restricts their practical applications. Herein, A novel polysaccharide-based foam with low-temperature buffering properties was fabricated through electrostatic self-assembly of carboxymethyl chitosan and sodium alginate combined with mechanical foaming. This composite process enables the encapsulation of polyethylene glycol while simultaneously stabilizing the foam structure generated by mechanical agitation. Remarkably, without any hydrophobic modification, the phase-change foam exhibits long-term structu

Preparation and characterization of self-healing nanocomposite hydrogels based on chitosan/polyethylene glycol/bacterial nanocellulose for wound dressing applications.

Hydrogels used for wound dressing applications often suffer from limited mechanical stability and insufficient self-repair capability, which restricts their long-term performance in dynamic physiological environments. This research aimed to prepare self-healing nanocomposite hydrogels based on chitosan, polyethylene glycol (PEG), and bacterial nanocellulose (BNC). For this purpose, PEG was first modified by an aldehyde agent, resulting in benzaldehyde-functionalized PEG (BM-PEG), to deliver bonding potential with the amine groups of chitosan. Nanocomposite hydrogels were then prepared by vorte

Comparative Analysis of Metabolic Dysfunctions Associated with Pristine and Aged Polyethylene Microplastic Exposure via the Liver-Gut Axis in Mice.

The accumulation of plastic waste in the environment has raised widespread concern about the impact of microplastics (MPs) on human and environmental health, particularly regarding aged MPs. This study investigated the effects of subchronic dietary intake on pristine and aged polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) in C57BL/6J mice. Results revealed that both pristine and aged PE-MPs, at doses of 0.01 and 1 mg/day, induced plasma metabolic changes primarily associated with lipid metabolism and digestive processes. These alterations were reflected in the expression changes of proteins involved in u

Analysis of partly bio-derived nonionic polyethylene glycol-based rheology modifiers by comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography.

Rheology modifiers (RMs) are polymeric molecules providing rheological control of formulations, which are important in product application, shelf-life, and aesthetic perception. Bio-derived polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based RMs thicken formulations through nonionic-associative thickening where at least two hydrophobic end groups from a RM molecule interact with other hydrophobic groups of other RM molecules or ingredients in the formulation to form an associative network. We report a comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC) separation of partly bio-derived PEG-based RMs in siz
