Neuropathic pain arises as a consequence of a lesion or disease affecting the somatosensory system and is characterised by a combination of positive and negative sensory symptoms. Quantitative sensory testing (QST) examines the sensory perception after application of different mechanical and thermal stimuli of controlled intensity and the function of both large (A-beta) and small (A-delta and C) nerve fibres, including the corresponding central pathways. QST can be used to determine detection, pain thresholds and stimulus-response curves and can thus detect both negative and positive sensory s

The physiology of the medial olivocochlear reflex suggests that a sufficiently long stimulus (>100 ms) may reduce cochlear gain and result in broadened frequency selectivity. The current study attempted to avoid gain reduction by using short maskers (20 ms) to measure psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) and notched-noise tuning characteristics, with a 4-kHz signal. The influence of off-frequency listening on PTCs was evaluated using two types of background noise. Iso-level curves were derived using an estimate of the cochlear input/output (I/O) function, which was obtained using an off-frequen

Motion transparency occurs when multiple coherent motions are perceived in one spatial location. Imagine, for instance, looking out of the window of a bus on a bright day, where the world outside the window is passing by and movements of passengers inside the bus are reflected in the window. The overlay of both motions at the window leads to motion transparency, which is challenging to process. Noisy and ambiguous motion signals can be reduced using a competition mechanism for all encoded motions in one spatial location. Such a competition, however, leads to the suppression of multiple peak re

AIM: Increased contrast-level dependent internal noise has been reported in migraine. This study aimed to investigate whether a general increase in internal noise impacted on other tasks thought to assess functioning in cortical area V1 and was evident in global contour coding (V4).
METHODS: Eleven migraineurs (six with aura) and 12 headache-free controls completed three psychophysical tasks: (i) contrast detection, (ii) discrimination of the angle of a spiral path and (iii) detection of deformation from circularity. Internal noise estimates were obtained using an N-pass method that compared

According to wide literature, a global impairment in the temporal and spatial domains as well as an increased crowding effect is common of dyslexics. The aim of the study was to evaluate if such subjects suffer from a more general impairment of spatial relationship perception (SRP) and in particular from anomalous spatial relationship anisotropy (SRA) thus accounting both for their global perceptual distortions and abnormal crowding. SRP of 39 young disabled readers and 23 normal subjects were measured by a specifically designed psychophysical technique based on circular and elliptical target

Several lines of evidence suggest that medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent neurons modify cochlear output to improve signal detection in noise. In animal models, stimulation of MOC efferents reduces the amount of compression in basilar membrane (BM) growth functions. Linearization of BM growth functions may assist in extending the neural response to the signal above that of noise, leading to a decrease in masking. In order to test this hypothesis, effects of MOC efferent neurons on BM compression were studied indirectly in humans by examining the effects of contralateral noise on distortion-pr

Behavioral studies show that infants are capable of discriminating the number of objects or events in their environment, while also suggesting that number discrimination in infancy may be ratio-dependent. However, due to limitations of the dependent measures used with infant behavioral studies, the evidence for ratio dependence falls short of the vast psychophysical datasets that have established ratio dependence, and thus, adherence to Weber's Law in adults and nonhuman animals. We addressed this issue in two experiments that presented 7-month-old infants with familiar and novel numerosities

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether a controlled unilateral reduction in auditory acuity at the higher audiometric frequencies would have an effect on the variability in responses obtained on a task designed to measure the precedence effect.
DESIGN: The experiment was conducted with participants located in a large sound proof, anechoic room, and psychophysical tests were conducted with long-duration noise burst stimuli. Reduction in auditory acuity was created by inserting a specially designed earplug in the ear of participants with normal hearing. The earplugs produce

Post-infectious olfactory loss is defined as an olfactory dysfunction in the course of an upper respiratory tract infection. Quantitative olfactory dysfunction is usually moderate to severe, with many patients experiencing a qualitative disorder such as parosmia. Diagnosis is made on the basis of patient history, normal clinical examination (no inflammatory disease in the olfactory cleft) and decreased olfactory function. This paper provides an update of pathophysiology, clinical management and prognosis, and also looks at the clinical characteristic of a cohort of 122 patients from our depart

OBJECTIVE: We developed visual motion evoked potential (EP) measures related to navigational impairment in Alzheimer disease (AD) and have now applied these methods to explore the role of elementary perceptual and attentional mechanisms mediating these effects.
METHODS: Older adult (OA) control subjects and AD patients underwent visual motion perceptual testing, attentional performance monitoring, and basic neuropsychological and visual assessments. We recorded stationary pattern onset and visual motion onset EPs as well as behavioral event-related potentials during centered visual fixation.

The Asiatic or Himalayan black bear (Selenarctos thibetanus) is an endangered species. In South Asian countries, captive tamed Himalayan bears are commonly used by roving bear-charmers to entertain the people in rural and urban areas. In captivity, this species confronts several psychophysical traumas and communicable diseases, which are prevalent in other domestic species. The present report describes four cases of Trypanosoma evansi infection in live Himalayan charming bears, which originated from the Faisalabad and Jhang districts of Pakistan. The condition was characterized by pyrexia, acc

Dystonia refers to a syndrome of sustained muscle contractions, frequently causing twisting and repetitive movements, or abnormal postures. Although the pathophysiology of the abnormal posture is still unknown and a wide variety of abnormal postures can be observed, recent psychophysical studies have revealed abnormalities in the way patients with focal and generalized dystonia judge the position of their bodies in space [Bove M, Brichetto G, Abbruzzese G, Marchese R, Schieppati M. Neck proprioception and spatial orientation in cervical dystonia. Brain 2004;127(Pt 12):2764-78; Molloy FM, Carr

CONCLUSION: Quantitative gustatory alterations are rare after microlaryngoscopy (MLS), whereas transient qualitative taste distortions occur more often. Patients undergoing MLS should know that mild but transient qualitative taste disorders may occur.
OBJECTIVE: Suspension MLS requires neck extension and tongue compression. Little is known about taste disorders following MLS. To investigate qualitative and quantitative gustatory function after MLS we tested and questioned patients before and several weeks after the MLS.

Many objective and quantitative methods have been developed to create a procedure or a device to prove, describe and quantify olfactory deficit and anosmia, especially after a head trauma. Electrophysiological testing throughout olfactoelectroencephalography (olfactoEEG) is based on brain activity desynchronisation, and on the subsequent disappearance of alpha activity on the posterior regions after an olfactory stimulus. Yet traditional evaluation of EEG can be difficult, because of little or hardly detectable alpha activity on the posterior regions ('alpha rare'). The aim of this study was t

When performing or perceiving music, we experience the melodic (spatial) and rhythmic aspects as a unified whole. Moreover, the motor program theory stipulates that the relative timing and the serial order of the movement are invariant features of a motor program. Still, clinical and psychophysical observations suggest independent processing of these two aspects, in both production and perception. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to dissociate between brain areas processing the melodic and the rhythmic aspects during piano playing from musical scores. This behavior requires

Amblyopia, sometimes called "lazy eye," is a relatively common developmental visual disorder well characterized behaviorally; however, the neural substrates associated with amblyopia in humans remain unclear. We hypothesized that abnormalities in the cerebral cortex of subjects with amblyopia exist, possibly as a result of experience-dependent neuronal plasticity. Anatomic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and psychophysical vision testing was carried out on 74 subjects divided into two age ranges, 7-12 years and 18-35 years, and three diagnoses, strabismic amblyopia, anisometropic amblyopia, a

Functional neuroimaging in human subjects and single cell recordings in monkeys show that several extra-striate visual areas are activated by visual motion. However, the extent to which different types of motion are processed in different regions remains unclear, although neuropsychological studies of patients with circumscribed lesions hint at regional specialization. We, therefore, studied four patients with unilateral damage to different regions of extrastriate visual cortex on a series of visual discrimination tasks that required them, to a different extent, to integrate local motion signa

To date the anatomical substrate(s) of prism adaptation remain(s) particularly debated, with two main candidates emerging from the literature: the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and the cerebellum. The functional processes involved in the acquisition of the adaptive aftereffects also remain largely unknown. The main result shown here is that a patient with a bilateral optic ataxia can adapt to an optical deviation, which allows us to make a step forward on these two issues. First, it demonstrates that the corresponding part of the PPC is not a necessary substrate for prism adaptation. Second,

Multi-unit, intra-cortical recordings from the primary motor cortex have been shown to provide information about functional movement of the body, and thus, have been used as command signals for control of an external robotic arm in rat and monkey. However, study of the M1 responses has shown that movement encoding may be dependent on both the functional and behavioral context of the intended motion. The main objective of the present work was to determine if self-paced, repetitive forelimb movements are effectively encoded in multiple-unit recordings from the primary motor cortex (M1) in freely
