Uterine rupture is a rare complication of pregnancy, occurring in 0.03% of deliveries in Denmark. This paper describes a case of asymptomatic uterine rupture in a 38-year-old woman. She was admitted with a history of excessive vaginal bleeding 14 days after a spontaneous delivery with the use of vacuum extraction. At the time of laparotomy, a complete uterine rupture was discovered and total hysterectomy was performed.

AIM: Is the sonographic measurement of the symphysis pubis enough to enable a prognosis of the occurrence of symphyseal pain during pregnancy and birth?
METHOD: First of all, a simplified definition of symphyseal pain was categorized in order to make the classification more easy. The symphyseal widths of 171 pregnant women were measured during pregnancy and after birth. Our control group consisted of 25 non-pregnant women. 15 of the 171 patients suffered from symphyseal pain; however, 156 of the 171 did not. Additionally, we measured the intrapartal symphyseal width in 11 of the women.

BACKGROUND: The Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF) very often occur in tropical countries, but their treatment is usually not correct.
METHODS: A surgical treatment was carried put on 68 patients affected by VVF from March 1986 to December 19997 in the Nazareth Hospital (Nairobi). Overweight and obesity have become a frequent phenomenon among pregnant women during last thirty years. They result in increased morbidity rates of different chronic, health- or even life-threatening diseases. Among different perinatal complications associated with obesity the most important are: hypertension, diabetes, varices, cholecystolithiasis, prolonged pregnancy, intrauterine growth retardation. Increased rates of operative deliveries, intrapartal and postpartal infections, thrombotic complications, anaemia, urinary infections and lactation disorders can be observed.

OBJECTIVE: Ovarian vein thrombosis (OVT) is known as a rare but serious postpartum complication. The condition is often clinically not distinguishable from endometritis, appendicitis or pyelonephritis. OVT may cause sepsis, septic pulmonary thromboembolism, and thrombosis of the inferior vena cava and the renal veins, and is potentially fatal. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study of lower urinary tract symptoms was carried out in a cohort of pregnant women who answered a series of symptom questionnaires and kept a 24-hour bladder chart on which frequency of urination and volumes voided were recorded throughout pregnancy and for 8 weeks after birth.

We report a retrospective analysis of four cases of peripartum cardiomyopathy admitted, within a 10-year period, to the maternity hospital of Sousse. The age of the patients was over 30 years, two had gemellary pregnancies and two suffered toxaemia. Congestive cardiac failure, mainly of the left ventricle, with acute pulmonary oedema, was the main symptom. Two mares were referred for evaluation after dystocia and rectal prolapse. Diagnostic laparoscopy, performed while the horses were standing, was used to evaluate the condition of the distal portion of the colon, rectum, uterus, and mesocolon. Three cases of cerebral hemorrhage that occurred in the puerperium in normotensive women who used bromocriptine for milk suppression postpartum are described. Unlike in some other instances reported in the past, the extent of the bleeding was limited in these patients and the long range outcome was relatively benign. All episodes were associated with the development of hypertension. These incidents occurred between the 10th and 17th days postpartum; somewhat later than the usually observed peak time period (6th to 8th day) for the development of severe bromocriptine related side effects.

Sixty-eight percent of female MRL-lpr mice developed a post-partum exacerbation of their mild spontaneous arthritis within 30 days of parturition. The flare became evident between 5 and 15 days after delivery. The authors report the case of a 34 year old woman with postpartum myocardial infarction due to spontaneous coronary dissection of the distal circumflex artery. A spontaneously regressive spasm of the right coronary artery was also observed. The outcome with heparin, glyceryl trinitrate and calcium antagonist therapy was favourable. Over one year later, coronary angiography showed total resolution of the dissection and a large aneurysm of the inferior and septal walls of the left ventricle.
