Novel insights of minocycline as a neurovascular protective agent in retinitis pigmentosa.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is characterised by progressive photoreceptor degeneration accompanied by vascular abnormalities. We have previously demonstrated that minocycline exhibits therapeutic potential in RP. This trial aimed to evaluate its neurovascular protective effects. METHODS: Patients with RP were enrolled and administered 100 mg of minocycline once daily for 12 months. A total of 32 eyes from 16 participants were included. The primary outcomes were changes in retinal and choroidal vasculature, including vessel density, lacunarity, foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area,

Retinal vascular changes are associated with PET-based biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Retina is a non-invasive channel for assessing changes in brain microvasculature, which has been implicated in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Previous studies revealed significant relationship between clinically diagnosed AD and retinal vasculature. However, clinical diagnosis has limited sensitivity and specificity, and those investigations were conducted from traditional retinal fundus photographs which only captured a narrow section of the fundus. OBJECTIVE: Determining changes in retinal vasculature from larger area of retina between subjects with positron em

MSGANet-RAV: A multiscale guided attention network for artery-vein segmentation and classification from optic disc and retinal images.

BACKGROUND: Retinal and optic disc images are used to assess changes in the retinal vasculature. These can be changes associated with diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma or induced using ophthalmodynamometry to measure arterial and venous pressure. Key steps toward automating the assessment of these changes are the segmentation and classification of the veins and arteries. However, such segmentation and classification are still required to be manually labelled by experts. Such automated labelling is challenging because of the complex morphology, anatomical variations, alteration

Regional variations in the biomechanical properties of the isolated porcine retina: potential implications for subretinal injection.

PURPOSE: To determine how the biomechanical properties of the retina vary across different quadrants of the eye and how commonly used storage media affect retinal biomechanics. METHODS: A total of 130 retinal strips were dissected from 90 six-month-old pigs eyes for uniaxial tensile testing. Vertical and horizontal strips were extracted from each quadrant, with ten samples per group. Four different storage media-Ringer's solution, balanced salt solution (BSS), phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and vitreous-were used. Strip thickness was measured using calibrated optical microscopy. Tensile tes

Morphological and Immunohistochemical Differentiation of Neuronal and Glial Cells of the Vascular and Avascular Regions of the Donkey's Paurangiotic Retina.

INTRODUCTION: Ocular diseases pose a significant health concern for donkeys. However, studies examining the microanatomy and cell populations of the donkey retina are scarce. The current study aimed to describe the vascular pattern of the donkey retina and document its cellular components. METHODS: The donkey retina specimens were obtained from different retinal regions and prepared for semithin sectioning and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The donkey has a paurangiotic retina in which retinal vessels are confined to a narrow area around the optic disc. Glial cells coexist with the blood ves…

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Eyes with Retinal Vein Occlusion.

Optical coherence angiography (OCTA) is a noninvasive technique that has been introduced in recent years to detect ophthalmological pathology. The growing usage of OCTA to detect retinal abnormalities can be attributed to its advantages over the reference-standard fluorescein angiography (FA), although both of these techniques can be used in association. OCTA's advantages include its dye independency, its ability to produce depth-resolved images of retinal and choroidal vessels that yield images of different vascular layers of the retina, and the better delineation of the foveal avascular zone

Microvascular Diseases of the Eye: Retinal Vasculature as a Cardiometabolic Biomarker.

Microvascular disease of the eye encompasses both structural and functional changes to the retinal vessels. Cardiometabolic disorders, such as hypertension and diabetes, are associated with early, measurable abnormalities in the retinal microvascular network that often emerge before cardiovascular disease becomes detectable. These features can be directly, noninvasively assessed with a multitude of evolving imaging techniques. Furthermore, these vascular changes can be used to predict future cardiac events, making them promising biomarkers for systemic disease. Early detection is essential, as…

Lumboperitoneal shunting as a cause of visual loss in benign intracranial hypertension.

The causes of visual loss in benign intracranial hypertension are related to long standing papilloedema, ischaemic optic neuropathy or haemorrhage into a subretinal neovascular membrane. Decompression procedures generally preserve or improve visual acuity but surgical treatment with subtemporal decompression may lead to visual impairment. Such a deficit has been recorded in the past as occurring with ventriculography. Postulated mechanisms have included brain herniation, spasm of vessels supplying the visual cortices or retinal vascular disturbance. To our knowledge treatment with lumboperiton

Hypoplasia of the optic nerve.

Premorbid ophthalmoscopic and histopathologic findings were correlated in a case of bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia in a 9-month-old infant with bilateral hydranencephaly. The double-ring sign was due to an extension of retina and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) over the outer portion of the lamina cribrosa. The outer ring was the junction between sclera and lamina cribrosa, and the inner ring was the termination of the RPE. The center of the inner ring was the hypoplastic nerve head, which appeared whitish because of fibroglial tissue surrounding the central retinal vessels where they enter…

Pathophysiology of retinopathy of prematurity.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vasoproliferative disease occurring in premature infants that affects the blood vessels of the developing retina. ROP results in the development of vascular shunts, neovascularization, and in its most severe form tractional retinal detachment. The development of retinal vascular shunts and neovascularization in ROP is related to local ischemia in the immature and incompletely vascularized retina. Understanding the pathophysiology of ROP helps physicians both in the prevention and treatment of ROP and will be discussed in this review article. The role of ox
