[Conversion symptoms of patients in psychiatric liaison care].

At the consultation-psychiatric service of a large university hospital conversion disorders present ca. 50% of the "somatoform disorders". The rate of incidence of conversion disorders was 4% of all patients seen in the service, i.e. 20-30 referrals per annum. A report on 103 patients referred during 1987-1990 is given concerning basic sociodemographic data, symptom clusters, course of illness, age at onset of the disorder, psychiatric and family history, psychosocial conditions and intrapsychic conflicts, additional affective disorders and psychophysiological symptoms, illness behaviour, cogn

The airway-brain axis: Connecting breath, brain, and behavior.

The neural control of breathing is both dynamic and essential, ensuring life-sustaining gas exchange while protecting the respiratory system from harm. Peripheral neurons innervating the respiratory tract exhibit remarkable diversity, continuously relaying sensory feedback to the brain to regulate breathing, trigger protective reflexes such as coughing and sickness behaviors, and even influence emotional states. Understanding this airway-brain axis is especially critical given the increasing global burden of respiratory diseases, as it holds implications for both human health and broader brain

Modelling motility of Trypanosoma brucei.

African trypanosomiasis, or sleeping sickness, is a life-threatening disease caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei. The bloodstream form of T. brucei has a slender body with a relatively long active flagellum, which makes it an excellent swimmer. We develop a realistic trypanosome model and perform mesoscale hydrodynamic simulations to study the importance of various mechanical characteristics for trypanosome swimming behavior. The membrane of the cell body is represented by an elastic triangulated network, while the attached flagellum consists of four interconnected running-in-p

Proteomic and clinical biomarkers for acute mountain sickness in a longitudinal cohort.

Ascending to high-altitude by non-high-altitude natives is a well-suited model for studying acclimatization to extreme environments. Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is frequently experienced by visitors. The diagnosis of AMS mainly depends on a self-questionnaire, revealing the need for reliable biomarkers for AMS. Here, we profiled 22 AMS symptom phenotypes, 65 clinical indexes, and plasma proteomic profiles of AMS via a combination of proximity extension assay and multiple reaction monitoring of a longitudinal cohort of 53 individuals. We quantified 1069 proteins and validated 102 proteins. Vi

Update on relevant trypanosome peptidases: Validated targets and future challenges.

Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of the American Trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease, and Trypanosoma brucei gambiense and Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, the agents of Sleeping sickness (Human African Trypanosomiasis, HAT), as well as Trypanosoma brucei brucei, the agent of the cattle disease nagana, contain cysteine, serine, threonine, aspartyl and metallo peptidases. The most abundant among these enzymes are the cysteine proteases from the Clan CA, the Cathepsin L-like cruzipain and rhodesain, and the Cathepsin B-like enzymes, which have essential roles in the parasites and thus are potential targe

Massive portal venous gas embolism after scuba diving.

INTRODUCTION: Portal venous gas from a diving injury is an infrequent finding and only a few cases are described. We report a case of severe decompression sickness (DCS) associated with a massive amount of gas in the portal and mesenteric veins. CASE REPORT: A 49-year-old man suffered from DCS after two deep dives on the same day. He presented with cutaneous, neurological and pulmonary symptoms associated with hypoxaemia. He had no abdominal pain. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed large quantities of hepatic and portal venous gas and excluded other explanations for its presence. All symp

Deadly Flies, Poor Profits, and Veterinary Pharmaceuticals: Sustaining the Control of Sleeping Sickness in Uganda.

Efforts to control neglected tropical diseases have increasingly focused on questions of implementation. But how should we conceptualize the implementation process? Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork between 2010 and 2012, in this article I explore efforts by a small-scale public-private partnership to use private veterinarians to sustainably control zoonotic sleeping sickness in Uganda. With a fundamental tension between business incentives and vector control, I show how divergences in knowledge, power, values, and social norms shaped project implementation and community responses. Reflecting

Motion Sickness: Current Knowledge and Recent Advance.

Motion sickness (MS) is a common physiological response to real or virtual motion. Numerous studies have investigated the neurobiological mechanism and the control measures of MS. This review summarizes the current knowledge about pathogenesis and pathophysiology, prediction, evaluation, and countermeasures of MS. The sensory conflict hypothesis is the most widely accepted theory for MS. Both the hippocampus and vestibular cortex might play a role in forming internal model. The pathophysiology focuses on the visceral afference, thermoregulation and MS-related neuroendocrine. Single-nucleotide

Recent progress in molecular diagnosis of sleeping sickness.

This article will review the most recent progress in the molecular diagnosis of sleeping sickness and its potential role in patient management and disease control. While PCR remains restricted to research and reference laboratories, promising alternative molecular platforms have emerged over the last few years. Several loop-mediated isothermal amplification assays have been developed for detection and identification of the parasite with reported high analytical sensitivity and specificity. Simplified loop-mediated isothermal amplification formats have been designed and are undergoing evaluatio

"Pushing oneself too hard": performance-based self-esteem as a predictor of sickness presenteeism among young adult women and men--a cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether young adults with highly performance-based self-esteem (PBSE) were present at work/studies when ill more frequently than were others. METHODS: By using data from a Swedish cohort of young adults aged 20 to 25 years (n = 5582 at baseline), we examined the association between PBSE and sickness presenteeism (SP) >5 times/yr (retrospectively at 1-year follow-up). RESULTS: PBSE was a predictor of SP even when adjusting for general health, psychological demands, physical demands, economic problems, and main occupation. A synergy effect was also observed between PBSE a

Interferon-gamma and a factor derived from trypanosomes cause behavioural changes in the rat.

A newly isolated interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) immunoreactive molecule, "neuronal IFN-gamma", and recombinant lymphocyte-derived IFN-gamma were injected intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) through a previously implanted cannula into adult male rats during both the light and the dark phases of the light/dark cycle. The two molecules caused a reduction in both frequency and duration of rearing and locomotion during the dark, but not the light, phase. A molecule isolated from Trypanosoma brucei brucei, a parasite of the same subspecies of trypanosomes which causes African sleeping sickness, can ind

Occurrence of human serum-resistant Trypanosoma congolense in goats and sheep in Nigeria.

An assessment of the role of dogs, goats and sheep as reservoir hosts of African trypanosomes infective for humans (sleeping sickness) was carried out in Nigeria during a 2-year study period. Twelve stocks of Trypanosoma (Trypanozoon) brucei, 10 stocks of Trypanosoma congolense and 11 stocks of Trypanosoma vivax were isolated from a total of 699 animals, comprising 286 sheep, 221 goats and 192 dogs. The potential infectivity of the isolates for man was tested in vitro using the blood incubation infectivity test. None of the T. brucei group was resistant to the trypanocidal action of human seru

Eosinophils: A Friend or Foe in Human Health and Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Since their discovery, around 150 years, eosinophils research has been a field of changing perspective, and new directions are emerging since then. SUMMARY: Initially, eosinophils were perceived as terminally differentiated cytotoxic effector cells. Clearly, eosinophils are capable of playing functions other than immune responses, which is not surprising given their intricate interactions with pathogens as well as other circulating leukocytes. Attempts to comprehend the eosinophil biology and functions have yielded remarkable insights into their roles in human health and sickness.

Trypanosoma brucei metabolite indolepyruvate decreases HIF-1α and glycolysis in macrophages as a mechanism of innate immune evasion.

The parasite Trypanasoma brucei causes African trypanosomiasis, known as sleeping sickness in humans and nagana in domestic animals. These diseases are a major burden in the 36 sub-Saharan African countries where the tsetse fly vector is endemic. Untreated trypanosomiasis is fatal and the current treatments are stage-dependent and can be problematic during the meningoencephalitic stage, where no new therapies have been developed in recent years and the current drugs have a low therapeutic index. There is a need for more effective treatments and a better understanding of how these parasites eva

Thyrocyte-interleukin-1 interactions.

Autoimmune thyroid disease is the most common organ-specific autoimmune disease and is a very common cause of thyroid dysfunction such as autoimmune hypothyroidism, Graves' disease and postpartum thyroiditis. The thyroid gland from patients with autoimmune thyroid disease is morphologically characterized by massive infiltration of lymphoid cells. The interleukin-1 (IL-1) family of molecules is together with other cytokines an integral component of the complex intercellular communication required to mount and control an immune response.
