Social relationships and end-of-life quality among older adults in the United States: the impacts of marital, kinship, and network ties.

OBJECTIVES: We examine marital status differences in recent decedents' end-of-life care and gender differences therein, and the role of other social ties (children, siblings, and network members) in influencing the quality of end-of-life care. METHOD: Data are from 12 waves (2011-2022) of the National Health and Aging Trends Study. We use binomial and multinomial logistic regression to evaluate the effects of marital status and other social ties on ten distinct dimensions of care in the last month of life, reported by proxies of deceased study participants. Outcomes were overall quality of ca

Impact of active tuberculosis on social mobility and its gender differences: Difference in differences using nationwide tuberculosis surveillance data and national health insurance data.

Although reducing catastrophic total costs caused by TB is a major public health concern, there is a scarcity of long-term follow-up studies on social suffering due to TB as well as studies examining gender gaps. This study aims to examine the degree of long-term change in household incomes due to active TB by gender. We created data for the TB and control groups by linking the Korean National Tuberculosis Surveillance System (KNTSS) and National Health Information Database (NHID) and covariate-adjusted propensity score matching (PSM). We created longitudinal panel data from two years before T

Alcohol Use Severity, Anger and Drinking Motives among Firefighters.

Background: Firefighters represent an understudied population with high rates of hazardous alcohol use and alcohol use disorder. This population is also at an increased risk of mental health disorders and related symptoms such as anger. Anger is a relatively understudied negative mood state with clinical relevance to alcohol use among firefighters. Anger is associated with greater alcohol use and may spur more approach-motivated reasons for drinking compared to other negative emotions. Objectives: This study sought to examine: 1. whether anger significantly contributes to alcohol use severity

Monitoring Misinformation on Twitter During Crisis Events: A Machine Learning Approach.

Social media has been increasingly utilized to spread breaking news and risk communications during disasters of all magnitudes. Unfortunately, due to the unmoderated nature of social media platforms such as Twitter, rumors and misinformation are able to propagate widely. Given this, a surfeit of research has studied false rumor diffusion on Twitter, especially during natural disasters. Within this domain, studies have also focused on the misinformation control efforts from government organizations and other major agencies. A prodigious gap in research exists in studying the monitoring of misin

Emotion sensitivity and self-reported symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder across the lifespan: A population-based sample approach.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) symptoms show deficits in emotion processing, but results of prior studies have been conflicting, and little is known about developmental trajectories of emotion processing over time. We examined the association between GAD symptoms and sensitivity to recognizing emotional facial expressions (emotion sensitivity: ES) for three emotions (happiness, anger, fear) in a large, diverse, population-based sample. We hypothesized that higher anxiety scores would be associated with poorer performance, and expected that ES performance and an

Adults with high functioning autism display idiosyncratic behavioral patterns, neural representations and connectivity of the 'Voice Area' while judging the appropriateness of emotional vocal reactions.

Understanding others in everyday situations requires multiple types of information processing (visual, auditory, higher order…) which implicates the use of multiple neural circuits of the human brain. Here, using a multisensory paradigm we investigate one aspect of social understanding less explored in the literature: instead of focusing on the capacity to infer what a specific person is thinking, we explore here how people with high functioning autism (HFA) and matched controls with typical development (TD) infer the "population thinking". For this we created an audio-visual 'social norm infe

Predictors of Empowerment in Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes is a chronic, progressive disease that has reached pandemic proportions. In Turkey, the frequency of diabetes in individuals aged 20 years or older has been reported to be 13.7% compared with the worldwide prevalence of 8.5%. Empowerment has been correlated with improvement in diabetic self-management capabilities and glycemic control. The purpose of this study was to examine predictors of "empowerment" in individuals with type 2 diabetes from Turkey. METHOD: This was a secondary analysis with a cross-sectional correlation design using stepwise linear regression

A deficit in face-voice integration in developing vervet monkeys exposed to ethanol during gestation.

Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders display behavioural and intellectual impairments that strongly implicate dysfunction within the frontal cortex. Deficits in social behaviour and cognition are amongst the most pervasive outcomes of prenatal ethanol exposure. Our naturalistic vervet monkey model of fetal alcohol exposure (FAE) provides an unparalleled opportunity to study the neurobehavioral outcomes of prenatal ethanol exposure in a controlled experimental setting. Recent work has revealed a significant reduction of the neuronal population in the frontal lobes of these monkeys. We

[Reproductive variables and gynaecological service use in delusional disorder outpatients].

INTRODUCTION: Oestrogens have been hypothesized to have a protective effect in psychotic disorders. Women with schizophrenia have a later age of menarche, fewer pregnancies and earlier age of menopause. However, little information is available focusing on delusional disorder (DD). We aimed to evaluate gynaecological variables and psychopathology, and rates of gynaecological service use in female DD outpatients. METHODS: Fourty-six outpatients with DD (DSM-IV-TR) were attended at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, from 2008 to 2013. Demographic and clinical variables, as well as gynaecological

Lateral epicondylitis in general practice: course and prognostic indicators of outcome.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the course of lateral epicondylitis and identify prognostic indicators associated with short- and longterm outcome of pain intensity. METHODS: We prospectively followed patients (n = 349) from 2 randomized controlled trials investigating conservative interventions for lateral epicondylitis in primary care. Uni- and multivariate linear regression analyses were used to investigate the association between potential prognostic indicators and pain intensity (0-100 point scale) measured at 1, 6, and 12 months after randomization. Potential prognostic factors were duration

The orbitofrontal-anterior temporal network complements the attention network for where to look in social situations.

Human neuroimaging experiments have consistently found dorsal and ventral attention networks subserving spatial shifts of covert attention or eye movements. However, these experiments used abstract, artificial stimuli for better experimental stimulus control and clearly defined instructions about where to attend or what to search for. This clearly is not an adequate model of eye movement control in natural environments full of semantic and social information. Here, we show that during movie viewing, activation of the dorsal and ventral attention networks was complemented by activation patterns

Reminders of Japanese redress increase Asian American support for Black reparations.

Informational interventions can shape policy attitudes, and in this study, we examined whether largely unknown information about past reparations payments toward one minoritized group would shape current policy judgments. In 1942, the U.S. government wrongfully relocated and imprisoned more than 120,000 Japanese Americans. In 1988, the government apologized and offered $20,000 USD in reparations payments. Japanese American redress is a recent, but not widely known, concrete example of communities who have successfully fought for reparative economic action. In two preregistered studies of onlin

Reward.

Neurons throughout frontal cortex show robust responses to rewards, but a challenge is determining the specific function served by these different reward signals. Most neuropsychiatric disorders involve dysfunction of circuits between frontal cortex and subcortical structures, such as the striatum. There are multiple frontostriatal loops, and different neuropsychiatric disorders involve different loops to greater or lesser extents. Understanding the role of reward in each of these different circuits is a necessary step in developing novel treatments for these disorders. This chapter summarizes

N1 responses to images of hands in occipito-temporal event-related potentials.

Hands, much like faces, convey social information, instructions and intentions to an observer. While the neural processes of face perception have been widely studied, it was only recently that fMRI identified occipito-temporal areas sensitive to static images of hands as body parts. To complement these studies with fine-grained timing information, we measured event-related EEG potentials (ERPs) from 33 subjects who were presented with static images of hands versus faces, whole bodies, and inanimate objects as controls. Already at N1 latency, ~ 170ms, hand-related ERP patterns were manifest in

The persistence of induced abortion in Cuba: exploring the notion of an "abortion culture".

Cuba's annual induced abortion rate persistently ranks among the highest in the world, and abortion plays a prominent role in Cuban fertility regulation despite widespread contraceptive prevalence and state promotion of modern contraceptives. We explore this phenomenon using the concept of an "abortion culture," typically used in reference to Soviet and post-Soviet countries. We synthesize existing literature to provide a historical account of abortion and contraception in Cuba. We also provide a qualitative analysis of abortion and contraceptive use based on in-depth interviews conducted in 2

Economic costs of dementia in 11 countries in Europe: Estimates from nationally representative cohorts of a panel study.

BACKGROUND: With population aging, the economic burden of dementia is growing in Europe. Understanding the economic costs of dementia provides an important basis for prioritization in public health policy and resource allocation. METHODS: We calculate the economic costs of dementia, including both direct medical and social care costs and indirect costs of informal care, for 11 countries in Europe. Costs are estimated using population-representative data from the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe from 2004 to 2017, supplemented with external information about wages of care wor

A Qualitative Analysis of Rural Community Vaccination Barriers During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Rural communities in the United States experience increased disparity of care for both general healthcare services and access to routine vaccines. Previous research has indicated a 40% lower vaccination rate in rural communities, as compared to urban counterparts. Having a better understanding regarding factors influencing lower vaccination rates in rural areas could help public health officials prepare for future vaccination efforts. This research sought to gather and evaluate the opinions of people who live and work in rural areas regarding barriers to COVID-19 vaccine

Using a theoretical framework of Intervention Mapping to inform public health communication messages designed to increase vaccination uptake; the example of mpox in the Netherlands.

INTRODUCTION: During an infectious disease outbreak, primary preventive pre-exposure vaccination (PPV) could substantially increase the potential for its control, if uptake is sufficiently high. An important tool to increase PPV uptake, are communication strategies, with tailored messages targeted to modify determinants for PPV uptake. Here, we take the example of the 2022 mpox multicountry outbreak, as we inform the development of communication strategies by applying a theoretical framework for selecting effective communication strategies. METHODS: The theoretical framework Intervention Mapp

Building and evaluating a social prescribing program for carer-employees: an intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Within a 12-month time window, and in partnership with the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing (CISP), an extension of the Canadian Red Cross (CRC), we will develop and test a social prescribing (SP) program intervention in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada for Carer-Employees (CEs) - those who balance unpaid care of an adult dependent with paid employment. Given the emergence of SP programs geared towards unpaid carers more broadly, the development of an SP program specific to CEs will provide coordinated access to social and community supports that are unique to the needs of CEs in

Community and familial dynamics influencing risk behavior for HIV acquisition among adolescent girls and young women in Uganda: Qualitative analysis using Protective Motivation Theory.

BACKGROUND: In Uganda, adolescent girls', and young women's (AGYW-15-24 years) current HIV prevalence is fourfold compared with their male counterparts due to compounded social, economic, and environmental factors. Using the Protective Motivation Theory (PMT), we explored HIV-acquisition risk sources and perceived protective factors from AGYW and caregivers' perspective. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During 2018, we conducted a qualitative study guided by PMT to explore factors influencing HIV acquisition among AGYW. We purposively sampled two groups of key informants, AGYW at high-risk for HIV acqu
