A Refugee Rose of competencies and capabilities for mental healthcare of refugees.

In this paper, I set out the challenges of care for refugees and suggest approaches to assessment and intervention. I discuss clinical interventions that can address the immediate concern of the clinician in a bio-psycho-social framework, and the value of considering eco-social and structural influences that can hinder recovery and perpetuate inequalities. Refugees face multiple adversities before, during and after escaping from life-threatening situations, political violence, torture and persecution. They present with complex health needs and encounter hostility from host countries and public

Does early family risk and current quality of care predict indiscriminate social behavior in institutionalized Portuguese children?

The current study extends research on the effects of institutionalization, most notably by evaluating the influence of proximal relationship processes over and above prenatal and pre-institutional family experiences. By focusing on current quality of institutional care and the child's early family background, it examines the influence of variations in the institutionalization experience on displays of indiscriminate social behavior, after taking into account potentially confounding pre-admission experiences. Seventy-four Portuguese children (11-30 months) placed in 17 residential institutions

The influence of social determinants on evidence-based behavioral interventions-considerations for implementation in community settings.

Over the last decade, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Diffusion of Effective Behavioral Interventions (DEBI) program funded several hundred community-based organizations (CBOs) and health departments in a wide-scale HIV prevention national diffusion effort. We interviewed six California agencies funded to implement one of three group-level DEBIs to identify facilitators and/or challenges to effective implementation. We identified several social and structural factors affecting community members' participation in DEBIs, including language issues, stigma associated with HIV and

Vasopressin mediates nonapeptide and glucocorticoid signaling and social dynamics in juvenile dominance hierarchies of a highly social cichlid fish.

Early-life social experience can strongly affect adult behavior, yet the behavioral mechanisms underlying developmental trajectories are poorly understood. Here, we use the highly social cichlid, Burton's Mouthbrooder (Astatotilapia burtoni) to investigate juvenile social status and behavior, as well as the underlying neuroendocrine mechanisms. We placed juveniles in pairs or triads and found that they readily establish social status hierarchies, with some group structural variation depending on group size, as well as the relative body size of the group members. Next, we used intracerebroventr

Virtual addictions: An examination of problematic social casino game use among at-risk gamblers.

The overlap of gaming and gambling activities within online digital technologies is of growing relevance to the study of technological addictions. Social casino games are immensely popular 'free to play' games that offer realistic emulation of financial gambling activities. Their structural similarities might suggest that engagement in social casino games may be particularly risky for people with existing gambling problems. Currently it is not known whether social casino games are used problematically by individuals who also experience problematic gambling, the extent of this overlap, the char

Social support and intellectual disabilities: a comparison between social networks of adults with intellectual disability and those with physical disability.

BACKGROUND: Social support has been identified as a major protective factor in preventing mental health problems and also as a major contributor to quality of life. People with intellectual disabilities (ID) have been identified as having limited social support structures. Interventions have been focused on promoting their social presence and integration. However, previous studies have shown that this does not always lead to the formation of social relationships. To date few studies have looked at how having an ID leads to impoverished social networks. This study aimed to do this by contrastin

A colonial legacy of HIV/AIDS, NTD, and STI super-syndemics: Eugenicist foreign aid and intertwined health burdens in Nigeria.

Syndemics theory has been applied to the structurally shaped, biologically facilitated co-occurrence of HIV/AIDS with Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and with sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The biological and social pathways of interaction between all three ailments have not yet been analysed together. The effects of these diseases are often exacerbated by structural factors including access to care and socioeconomic status. We explore the interrelated biological pathways and structural factors that have further heightened the risk for HIV/AIDS, NTDs, and STIs. Furthermore, we argu

(Inter)mediation and support: core interdisciplinary purposes of social workers in oncology.

Cancer is one of the greatest health challenges of our time. This study addresses the issue through the work of social workers in Portuguese hospital units and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that provide oncology care. We aim to understand the main roles assumed by social workers and the constraints they face in a context that demands constant interdisciplinarity and interinstitutional coordination. Data gathered from fieldwork, based on interviews and documentary research, show that the roles of social workers in oncology are quite diverse, designed to meet the complex challenges that

Understanding social disinhibition in acquired brain injury: drawing upon first person experiences.

PURPOSE: Social disinhibition, the inability to behave in a manner consistent with social "rules" and norms, is one of the most commonly reported outcomes following brain injury. The experience of social disinhibition from the perspective of those with lived experience, however, remains poorly understood. The purpose of this study therefore was to increase understanding of how social disinhibition presents among those with a brain injury and how this might differ from the perspective of carers. METHOD: Fourteen participants (nine acquired brain injury, five primary carers) aged 18 years and o

How positive and negative intergroup contact jointly inform minority support for social change: The role of system-fairness beliefs.

Research suggests that positive contact with majorities may 'sedate' (undermine) minority support for social change, while negative contact may promote it. However, most studies to date have examined both forms of contact separately, which may not give an accurate picture of their effects. This study examines the joint effects and interplay of positive and negative contact on minority support for social change, and the role of system-fairness beliefs across seven ethnic minority samples in six countries (N = 790). Multigroup Structural Equation Modelling showed that negative contact predicted

Exposure to early childhood maltreatment and its effect over time on social cognition.

Social cognitive deficits can have many negative consequences, spanning social withdrawal to psychopathology. Prior work has shown that child maltreatment may associate with poorer social cognitive skills in later life. However, no studies have examined this association from early childhood into adolescence. Using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC; n = 4,438), we examined the association between maltreatment (caregiver physical or emotional abuse; sexual or physical abuse), assessed repeatedly (every 1-3 years) from birth to age 9, and social cognitive skill

A mixed methods study of health and social disparities among substance-using African American/Black men who have sex with men.

African American/Black men who have sex with men (MSM) in the U.S. experience health and social disparities at greater rates than MSM of other races/ethnicities, including HIV infection and substance use. This mixed methods paper presents: 1) a quantitative examination of health and social disparities among a sample of substance-using African American/Black MSM (N=108), compared to Caucasian/White MSM (N=250), and 2) in-depth qualitative data from a subsample of African American/Black MSM (N=21) in order to contextualize the quantitative data. Findings indicate that compared to Caucasian/White

Finding social phobia patients from the Internet.

Patients with social phobia commonly resist face-to-face assessments, and a number of alternative assessment methods based on the Internet are being developed. The aim of this study was to identify patients with social phobia on the Internet and characterize their condition, using the Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN). In Stage I, this study recruited 1307 participants from the Internet, most of whom were well-educated young females, who had remained unmarried and unemployed. The Internet-based SPIN demonstrated excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α=0.937) and good test-retest reliability

Endoscopic sympathetic block--new treatment of choice for social phobia?

Social phobia is a neglected disorder, which can cause very debilitating consequences in patients' lives. The patients tend to isolate and suffer from comorbid disorders such as depression, other anxiety disorders, and drug and alcohol abuse. Traditional treatment methods such as medication and psychotherapy do not help everyone. A prospective, uncontrolled follow-up study with 169 social phobic patients was performed by uni- or bilateral endoscopic sympathetic block of the upper thoracic ganglia. The method is reversible by taking the compression block away, if needed. The selected patients h

The Effect of Social Associations on Mammography Screening Disparities in Rural Communities: A County-Level Secondary Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Mammography screening rates in rural counties are lower compared to urban counties. We hypothesized that social associations may help ameliorate this rural-urban disparity. Thus, the purpose of this ecological study was to explore the relationships among rurality, social associations, and mammography screening. METHODS: We conducted a secondary, county-level analysis of the 2022 County Health Rankings and Roadmaps data. We classified counties as rural or urban (rural-urban continuum code of 4+ vs. others), and we gathered the number of social organizations per 10,000 residents (

Patterns of Social Participation and Late-Life Depression: The Mediating Role of Social Support and Aging Attitudes.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the engagement patterns of older Chinese adults and their association with depression, including potential mediating roles of social support and aging attitudes, and how they are influenced by urban and rural factors. METHODS: We use latent class analysis to categorized social engagement patterns using national survey data from 5,582 Chinese adults aged over 60. The effect of moderation and mediation was tested by the PROCESS macro (Model 4 and Model 8) for SPSS 27.0 by Hayes, using 5,000 bootstrap samples. RESULTS: Three social engagement patterns were identif

Individual differences in social network size linked to nucleus accumbens and hippocampal volumes in functional neurological disorder: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: In the biopsychosocial formulation of functional neurological (conversion) disorder (FND), little is known about relationships between social behavior and brain anatomy. We hypothesized that social behavior would relate to brain areas implicated in affiliative behaviors and that social network size would correlate with symptom severity and predisposing vulnerabilities in FND. METHODS: This neuroimaging pilot probed how social network size, as measured by the Social Network Index, related to structural brain profiles in 23 patients with motor FND (15 woman and 8 men). A network analysis to explore illness perceptions in Black adults with type 2 diabetes.

OBJECTIVES: This study explores the structure of beliefs about type 2 diabetes among Black adults and informs potential targets to reframe negative beliefs and enhance diabetes self-management. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We applied network analysis to investigate the interrelated structure and clusters of beliefs about diabetes and identify specific items that could serve as behavioural targets. We obtained self-reported survey data from 170 Black adults with type 2 diabetes. Regularised partial correlation networks and a Gaussian graphical model were used to explore and visualise the inter

An exploratory factor analysis of an e-CHUG drinking motives scale with mandated students.

OBJECTIVE: Colleges maintain alcohol policies in response to student alcohol misuse, and sanctions for violating these policies often mandate students to attend alcohol education and/or counseling (Anderson & Gadaleto, 2021). Electronic Checkup to Go (e-CHUG) is a widely used online motivational intervention program that provides feedback to college students to encourage them to alter their drinking behaviors (eCheckup to Go, 2021). While measures included in e-CHUG have clear clinical utility, their psychometric properties have not been evaluated. The present study was designed to evaluate th
