Assessment of the impact of CT calibration procedures for proton therapy planning on pediatric treatments.

PURPOSE: Relative stopping powers (RSPs) for proton therapy are estimated using single-energy computed tomography (SECT), calibrated with standardized tissues of the adult male. It is assumed that those tissues are representative of tissues of all age and sex. Female, male, and pediatric tissues differ from one another in density and composition. In this study, we use tabulated pediatric tissues and computational phantoms to investigate the impact of this assumption on pediatric proton therapy. The potential of dual-energy CT (DECT) to improve the accuracy of these calculations is explored. M

Advancing sustainable agriculture through multi-parameter fuzzy soft set-based plant disease classification.

Plant diseases significantly affect agricultural productivity and global food security, while accurate disease identification remains challenging because of uncertain and overlapping visual symptoms in leaf images. Existing deep learning approaches often require large annotated datasets and suffer from limited interpretability in practical agricultural environments. This study presents a multi-parameter improved fuzzy soft set-based framework for plant disease classification using tomato leaf images from the PlantVillage dataset. The objective is to develop an interpretable and reliable classi

The application of chimeric deep circumflex iliac artery perforator flap for oromandibular reconstruction: A case report.

RATIONALE: The free fibular flap is considered the gold standard, particularly for a mandibular defect combined with a significant soft tissue defect. However, the fibular flap has the disadvantages of a lack of height for postoperative dental restoration and donor site skin graft if the skin paddle is wider than 5 cm. The larger bone and soft tissue defects tend to be reconstructed using either a scapula or a combination of iliac artery and radial free flap. Few cases involving reconstruction using chimeric deep circumflex iliac artery perforator flap (DCIAPF) for mandibular defect combined w

Diagnosis of extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma in the thigh using EWSR1-NR4A3 gene fusion: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare soft tissue sarcoma that has unusual ultrastructural and molecular features. However, unlike other soft tissue sarcomas, it does not have specific clinical symptoms or radiological features, which can make its diagnosis difficult. Nevertheless, extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma has a rare gene fusion (EWSR1-NR4A3) that is useful for making a differential diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old Japanese man presented with a soft tissue mass in his right thigh. A physical examination and radiography revealed a large soft tissue mas

Custom subperiosteal implants used to rehabilitate the atrophic edentulous maxilla following multiple failures of both conventional as well as zygomatic implants: a case report.

The treatment of cleft lip and cleft palate patients typically involves numerous surgeries, often including the replacement of missing teeth and endosseous dental implants are often utilized in this context. Endosseous dental implants require adequate bone volume for placement, and in this patient cohort this often requires an initial alveolar bone graft. Technological advancements can now harness computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) to produce modern custom subperiosteal implants that utilize the available bone surface, thus providing an alternative treatment for p

Nasopharyngeal sialocele excision with an electrosurgical snare in a dog.

A 9-year-old female spayed Pug presented for marked obstructive apnoea and intermittent sneezing. On presentation, the dog had mild tachypnoea and increased inspiratory effort when sleeping. A nasopharyngeal mass was observed during the upper airway examination. On computed tomography scan, the nasopharyngeal characteristics and Hounsfield units were most consistent with a soft tissue mass. Endoscopic-guided electrosurgical snare cauterisation was performed. Procedure time was approximately 5 minutes. The discharge from the nasopharyngeal mass was submitted for cytology, and results were consi

A soft robotic sleeve mimicking the haemodynamics and biomechanics of left ventricular pressure overload and aortic stenosis.

Preclinical models of aortic stenosis can induce left ventricular pressure overload and coarsely control the severity of aortic constriction. However, they do not recapitulate the haemodynamics and flow patterns associated with the disease. Here we report the development of a customizable soft robotic aortic sleeve that can mimic the haemodynamics and biomechanics of aortic stenosis. By allowing for the adjustment of actuation patterns and blood-flow dynamics, the robotic sleeve recapitulates clinically relevant haemodynamics in a porcine model of aortic stenosis, as we show via in vivo echoca

Cochlear Implant Electrode Migration due to Cholesterol Granuloma: Cues from a Case.

This paper aims to describe a rare case of cochlear implant (CI) failure due to electrode array migration and review the literature on the topic. A 72-year-old woman complained of retroauricolar pain two years after receiving a left CI, with deterioration of the auditory skills and an increased impedance of electrodes. Temporal bone computed tomographic scans revealed a soft density tissue involving the left mastoid and the middle ear. It also revealed a lateral displacement of the array into the middle ear. Surgery with CI re-implantation was performed. The specimen examination disclosed the

The emerging role of maxillofacial radiology in the diagnosis and management of patients with complex periodontitis.

Contemporary periodontal therapy has evolved to become more interdisciplinary and increasingly involves more complex treatments, including bone and soft-tissue regenerative procedures. Therapeutic options require an imaging modality or combination of techniques that are capable of providing a diagnostic osseous baseline and facilitating quantification of smaller increments of bony change, both loss and additive, which are comparable over time. Intra-oral and panoramic radiography are the modalities most commonly used to identify the location, quantify the amount and the pattern of alveolar bon

[Upper airways and sleep apnea syndrome].

The imaging techniques of the upper airway (UA) now permit a description of the characteristics of pharyngeal collapse during the course of obstructive apnoea. The start is oropharyngeal with active movements anterior and posterior of the soft palate and a falling back of the tongue. The extension occurs almost systematically towards the hypopharynx. A displacement of the hyoid bone and of the cervical spine is noted synchronously with thoracoabdominal movements. These imaging techniques of UA show the occurrence of passive pharyngeal collapse during certain types of central apnoea. In snorers

Effects of recumbency and tube current on image quality of canine elbow computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Elbow dysplasia is a leading cause of forelimb lameness in medium- to large-breed dogs, and computed tomography (CT) is the imaging modality of choice for assessment of the medial coronoid process. Image quality depends on patient positioning and tube current, but their effects have not been systematically compared. AIMS: To compare the image quality of two canine elbow CT positioning protocols (dorsal recumbency: head in neutral position, both elbows scanned together vs. lateral recumbency: head/neck flexed caudally, elbows scanned separately), and to evaluate the influence of tu

Impact of four-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography on target localization for gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma radiotherapy: reducing planning target volume.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy of gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma should be delivered to the entire stomach with planning target volume (PTV) that accounts for variations in stomach volume, respiratory movement, and patient set-up error. In this study, we evaluated whether the use of four-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography (4D-CBCT) reduces the PTV. METHODS: Eight patients underwent radiotherapy with 15 fractions of gastric MALT lymphoma using 4D-CBCT. PTV structures of 5-30 mm margins (5 mm intervals) from the clinical target volume (CTV) delineated based on the 4D
