Distinct Patterns of Cortical Morphology Reorganization in Children with Complete and Incomplete Spinal Cord Injuries.

Pediatric spinal cord injury (SCI) induces extensive neuroplastic changes in the developing brain; however, the patterns of cortical remodeling associated with complete (CSCI) and incomplete (ICSCI) injuries remain poorly understood. In this study, high-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess cortical morphological alterations in 72 pediatric SCI patients (38 CSCI and 34 ICSCI) and 37 age-matched healthy controls (HCs). Key cortical metrics-including surface area, thickness, volume, and curvature-were analyzed to characterize injury-related reorganization. Significa

Effect of traditional rehabilitation programme versus telerehabilitation in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Telerehabilitation has become increasingly popular since the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) outbreak. However, studies are needed to understand the effects of remote delivery of spine treatment approaches. OBJECTIVES: To verify and compare the effects of traditional rehabilitation programmes (in-person) and telerehabilitation (online) on the progression of scoliotic curvature in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to verify the acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility among patients and physiotherapists regarding both treatments. METHODS: This is

Repair of retrograde ascending dissection after descending stent grafting.

OBJECTIVE: Retrograde dissection is now recognized as an important complication after thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR), but its treatment is poorly understood. Our objectives were to investigate the risks, describe the repair methods, and assess the outcomes of this complication. METHODS: From 2000 to 2012, 766 patients underwent TEVAR. Of these patients, 14 (1.8%), plus 1 who had undergone TEVAR elsewhere (n = 15), developed retrograde dissection after stent grafting. They had undergone TEVAR for distal aortic dissection in 7, intramural hematoma in 5, aneurysm in 2, and transecti

Improved shoulder flexion in older females following an 8-week daily exercise program on a 36-inch foam roller.

PURPOSE: Older females with thoracic hyperkyphosis (HPK) are at risk of limited shoulder range of motion (ROM). The purpose of this eight-week study was to determine whether a daily 20-min training protocol with a 36-inch foam roller would improve shoulder flexion ROM in older females with mild HPK. METHODS: Eleven females (average age: 63.5 ± 8.1 years) completed the study. During the initial screening, a PAR-Q+, a physical activity rating scale, height, weight, and shoulder flexion measurements were collected. Participants were provided with a 20-min YouTube tutorial video to guide them thr

Acute Exposure of Veterinary Antibiotic Tilmicosin Leads to Idiopathic Scoliosis-Like Vertebral Malformation Development Through Regulating PI3K-Akt Pathway in Zebrafish.

The widespread use of veterinary antibiotics in animal husbandry, such as tilmicosin (TIL), poses potential threats to environment pollution and human health. In this study, we conducted acute TIL exposure experiment using zebrafish model to explore the toxicological effects. In the concentration range of 20-80 mg/L, TIL did not affect zebrafish body length development but induced idiopathic scoliosis (IS)-like symptoms accompanied by impaired mobility. IS predominantly occurs in adolescents, while the etiology remains unclear. Further studies showed that the combination of quercetin and luteo

Vertebral augmentation: How we do it.

Vertebral augmentation consists of minimally invasive techniques indicated in the treatment of vertebral compression fractures (VCFs). These compression fractures cause vertebral body height loss and consequent significant pain and are most frequently the result of osteoporosis, cancer metastasis, or trauma. The deleterious effects of VCFs often compound, as greater load-bearing stress is transferred to the remaining healthy vertebrae. Kyphoplasty, vertebroplasty, and intravertebral implants are closely related vertebral augmentation techniques that serve to relieve pain and to counter pathoph

Modified Kickstand Rod Technique for the Correction of Adult Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Adult idiopathic scoliosis (ADIS) is the delayed form of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) which is defined as a three-dimensional deformity with a lateral curvature of more than 10° in adults with prior history of AIS. Surgery is necessary for patients with symptoms of chronic pain, neuromotor deficits and cardiopulmonary problems with a Cobb angle exceeding 45°. In untreated patients, AIS may lead to ADIS which can cause serious problems like osteoarthritis, progressive deformity and spinal stenosis. In recent years, the kickstand rod technique has been introduced in addition to posterio

Adverse effect of cylindrospermopsin on embryonic development in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Eutrophication of freshwater bodies increases the occurrence of toxic cyanobacterial blooms. The cyanobacterial toxin cylindrospermopsin (CYN) is receiving great interest due to its increasing presence in waterbodies. However, the toxic effects of CYN on zebrafish development are poorly understood, especially the toxicological mechanism, which is still unclear. In this study, we examined the adverse effects of CYN on embryonic development in zebrafish. CYN (2-2000 nM) exposure decreased embryos survival rate, hatching rate, body length and eye size in a concentration-dependent manner and cause

Are there characteristic motion patterns in the lumbar spine during flexion?

Flexion is the main motion of the lumbar spine. While in vitro tests with pure moments suggest larger intra-segmental rotations for the more caudal segments, in vivo results show diverging motion distributions. The present study analysed the motion distribution in vivo of 320 asymptomatic subjects. The change of the back curvature between standing and upper body flexion was determined using a non-invasive measurement device. Linear, bilinear, trilinear, quadratic, and cubic regression models were fitted to the segmental motion distribution over the lengths of the lordosis to categorise charact

Study of transpedicular screw fixation on spine development in a piglet model.

BACKGROUND: Transpedicular screws may cause damage to the cartilage in the neural arch of the vertebra, and give continuous pressure to the skeleton besides the vertebral body. The aim of this study is to examine the morphological change of the vertebral body at fixation sites and development of the vertebral body after fixation. METHODS: A piglet model was used to study the influence of transpedicular screw fixation on spine development. Transpedicular screw fixation was adjusted to meet specific requirements of surgery on piglet. The screws and plates were placed at L1-L3 vertebral plates v

Spontaneous resolution of scoliosis associated with lumbar spondylolisthesis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Scoliosis in association with spondylolisthesis is a common phenomenon. According to the traditional opinion, scoliosis should be managed depending on its classification and flexibility. Recently, Crostelli and Mazza proposed a new opinion toward this topic. They advocate that spondylolisthesis-associated scoliosis, especially severe scoliosis, should be considered as idiopathic scoliosis and must be treated with the same principles used in the treatment of idiopathic scoliosis. According to their viewpoints, more scoliotic curves in association with spondylolisthesis need

Curly tail: a 50-year history of the mouse spina bifida model.

This paper reviews 50 years of progress towards understanding the aetiology and pathogenesis of neural tube defects (NTD) in the curly tail (ct) mutant mouse. More than 45 papers have been published on various aspects of curly tail with the result that it is now the best understood mouse model of NTD pathogenesis. The failure of closure of the spinal neural tube, which leads to spina bifida in this mouse, has been traced back to a tissue-specific defect of cell proliferation in the tail bud of the E9.5 embryo. This cell proliferation defect results in a growth imbalance in the caudal region th

A genomic approach to scoliosis pathogenesis.

Genetic predisposition contributes to scoliosis in humans. Two syndromes of primary scoliosis occur--congenital scoliosis, which presents at birth, often associated with other abnormalities, and idiopathic scoliosis which becomes apparent between infancy and adolescence. Little is known regarding the genetic transmission of scoliosis risk. Data gleaned from mouse mutations provide a valuable supplement to human family studies. More than 50 mouse mutations include scoliosis, kyphosis, or tail kinks as a phenotype; the locations of the human homologues for 28 of these can be predicted on the bas

Relationship between pelvic incidence and hip, pelvic, and lumbar motion during squatting in healthy individuals with high and low pelvic incidence.

Pelvic incidence (PI)—the sacral angle relative to the pelvis—is a posture-independent spinopelvic parameter influencing pelvic and lumbar alignment. Because PI affects sagittal spinal configuration, it may reflect susceptibility to posterior pelvic tilt and reduced femoral head coverage. However, its influence on pelvic, lumbar, and hip motion during dynamic tasks is unclear. We examined whether individuals with high and low PI have differing time-series hip, pelvic, and lumbar angles during squatting. Twenty-six healthy male individuals were classified into high (≥ 53.8°) and low (≤ 43.1°) P
