Principles of surgical treatment of congenital, developmental and acquired female breast asymmetries.

BACKGROUND/AIM: There is a natural asymmetry in normal female brests. When the difference in the shape, size or position of the breast and nipple-areola complex is visible, surgical correction is the only treatment option and presents one of the greatest challenges for a plastic surgeon. Based on the Nahai classification presented in details, the aim of the study was to present the possibilities of plastic surgery to correct primary (congenital), secondary (developmental) and tertiary (acquired) brest asymmetries. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of female breast asymmetry surge

Simulation in Cleft Care: Evolution, Evidence, and Training the Future Surgeon.

Strict trainee work-week hour restrictions, increased complexities of surgical care, and shifting hospital policies have posed challenges to operating room training for residents in high-resource regions. A shortage of cleft-trained surgeon educators and inconsistent training curricula further limit exposure to cleft operative education in low-resource settings. Furthermore, teaching cleft surgery can be difficult given the confined space of the infant oral cavity and the small, delicate flaps used for reconstruction. In the face of these challenges, the role of simulation has expanded in surg

Welfare and Self-Assessment in Patients after Aesthetic and Reconstructive Treatments.

In the last decade, there has been a noticeable increase in the interest in aesthetic and corrective surgery regardless of a patient's age. Both aesthetical and practical considerations are a motivation for patients undergoing plastic surgery. The goal of this study is to analyze dependencies between welfare, self-assessment and body self-perception in patients that qualified for plastic and aesthetic surgical procedures. The study group included 164 female patients, of whom 124 patients filled out a questionnaire before and after surgery. The questionnaire included demographic data and scales

Lower limb preservation after severe degloving injury: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Degloving injuries to the lower extremities are relatively rare. We herein report a case of 35-year-old male patient, who sustained a mangled degloving injury to the left lower extremity after a car accident. Despite the severity of the injury, we opted for limb salvage. METHODS: The patient presented with a large soft-tissue defect in the anterior compartment of the calf with neurovascular injury. The bones were intact. Reconstructive surgery involves repeated radical debridement, revascularisation, negative-pressure wound therapy, and plastic surgery. Treatment was complex and c

[Compensation of unforeseeable medical complications following cosmetic surgery finally made possible by ONIAM].

In the absence of any proven medical fault by a plastic surgeon, the patient could not obtain compensation through national solidarity (as stipulated by the Law of March 4th 2002). Indeed ONIAM (France's National Office for Medical Accidents' Compensation) has always rejected any claims on the grounds that cosmetic surgery differs from medical care. Through its judgment of February 5th 2014, France's final Court of Appeals settled the question and considered cosmetic surgery as medical care; in case of serious injuries following unforeseeable medical complications, the patient may be compensat

Gingival recession treatment using a bilayer collagen membrane.

Traditional periodontal plastic surgery techniques for the management of gingival recession have typically used soft tissue grafts to obtain defect coverage with great clinical success. Clinicians using guided tissue regeneration (GTR) techniques are also enjoying significant success in periodontal plastic surgery procedures. GTR therapy utilizing bioabsorbable membranes offers the advantages of preventing a donor site surgery and a second surgical procedure for barrier removal. A new bioabsorbable bilayer collagen membrane that readily adapts to bone and tooth surfaces by a gel formation of c

Advances in oculoplastic surgery.

Ophthalmic plastic surgery, a sub-specialty within ophthalmology, encompasses diagnosis and treatment of diseases and abnormalities of the eyelids, orbit, and lacrimal systems. Eyelid carcinoma is a more common entity as well as blepharoptosis seen in children and adults. It can usually be corrected by surgery involving the levator palpebrae superioris or a tarsofrontalis suspension using synthetic material or human tissue. Retraction of the upper eyelid, the opposite of blepharoptosis, may be seen in patients with thyroid eye (Graves') disease. Treatment by recession of the levator aponeurosi

Osseointegration of Extremity Prostheses: A Primer for the Plastic Surgeon.

Interest in amputation surgery has increased in conjunction with rising public awareness about amputee care. To date, plastic surgeons have impacted the quality of life and functional potential of amputees through novel strategies for sensory feedback and prosthesis control and various techniques for neuroma treatment and prevention. Osseointegration, which involves the direct skeletal attachment of a prosthesis to bone, has the ability to further maximize amputee function. There exists a critical role for plastic surgeons to help optimize techniques for extremity osseointegration through impr

Psychiatric Disorders in Aesthetic Surgery: A Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric disorders are common among patients seeking aesthetic surgery, yet preoperative psychological assessments are rarely standardized. Identifying these conditions is essential, as they can significantly affect postoperative satisfaction and mental well-being. METHODS: This prospective multicentric study was conducted in three Belgian hospitals (Erasme, Brugmann, and CHIREC Braine-l'Alleud) between June 2022 and December 2024. Seventy-five patients consulting for aesthetic procedures underwent a 2-hour preoperative consultation including psychological evaluation with the B

Three-Dimensional Affordable Stone Models for Cleft Lip Markings: A Prospective Study of Learner Satisfaction.

INTRODUCTION: Knowledge of surgical markings for unilateral cleft lip (UCL) repair is critical for surgical competency. However, few appropriate models are accessible to residents and affordable and accurately reproduce this 3-dimensional (3D) deformity. We propose that cleft care units have the capability of creating affordable 3D stone models to teach UCL markings. METHODS: Polyvinyl siloxane and SnapStone were used to create UCL stone models. Thirteen plastic surgery residents were prospectively recruited, provided with a textbook chapter and online module for studying surgical markings fo

Approaches to Distal Upper-Extremity Trauma: A Comparison of Plastic, Orthopedic, and Hand Surgeons in Academic Practice.

BACKGROUND: Hand trauma call duties at university medical centers are traditionally split among plastic surgeons and orthopedic surgeons, frequently without additional fellowship training in hand and upper-extremity surgery. Differences in operative approach between these groups have never been specifically described. The University Health Consortium-Association of American Medical Colleges Faculty Practice Solutions Center database contains comprehensive, factual, billing and coding data from 90 academic medical centers in the United States and can be used to characterize the practice pattern

A patient with combined corneal and ingrowing conjunctival tissue tattooing by micropigmentation method.

PURPOSE: This report describes the clinical efficacy of combined corneal and conjunctival micropigment tattooing for the treatment of a corneoconjunctival opacity. CASE SUMMARY: Combined corneal and conjunctival micropigment tattooing was performed on a 39-year-old man who had a cosmetic problem due to traumatic corneoconjunctival opacity. After removal of the corneal epithelium, a 30-gauge needle filled with dye was placed into the corneal stroma. The dye was injected into the stroma and conjunctiva. The patient was followed up for 24 months postoperatively. Although some of the dye dissipat
