Protocol for the Southeast Asian Healthy Habits, Healthy Kids (SEAHK) study, a culturally tailored family-based pilot randomized controlled trial to improve dietary quality.

BACKGROUND: Southeast Asian (SEA) children are burdened by high rates of diet-related chronic conditions and diseases. These burdens partly result from socioeconomic disadvantages and refugee migration trajectories. Yet, to our knowledge, no dietary interventions exist for this population. This protocol paper describes the rationale, study design, intervention and study evaluation for the SEA Healthy Habits, Healthy Kids Study. METHODS: The study enrollment goal was 75 parent-child dyads recruited in Providence, Rhode Island, in the United States. A SEA parent/guardian and one of their 6-to-1

A call for supplemental implementation strategy reporting guidelines to advance minority health: applying expanded specification and reporting recommendations to the Literacy Promotion for Latinos study.

BACKGROUND: Reporting guidelines for implementation strategies are important for transparency, measurement, and replicability. Yet, recent calls within implementation science highlight that foundational research commitments to advance minority health remain underspecified in current implementation strategy reporting guidelines. METHODS: In response, our research team sought to expand Proctor and colleagues' guidelines for reporting and specifying implementation strategies to advance minority health. We first identified and synthesized key elements for specification from relevant literature. W

Effectiveness of Intraosseous Morphine for Pain Control in Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Double-Blinded, Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Effective pain management following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is crucial to optimizing patient outcomes and experiences. Multimodal pain management protocols vary between institutions, with some recently proposing the addition of an intraosseous (IO) injection of morphine intraoperatively. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the addition of an intraoperative, IO injection of morphine during elective primary TKA would lead to improved pain control and decreased narcotic consumption during the postoperative period. METHODS: In this double-blinded, randomized con

The effect of remote nurse-led patient education and follow-up on glycemic control and metabolic function in patients with type 2 diabetes: a single-blind randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by impaired insulin secretion, insulin resistance, and progressive β-cell dysfunction that ultimately leads to serious vascular and metabolic complications. Effective diabetes management requires innovative approaches such as remote education and nurse-led interventions. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of remote nurse-led patient education and follow-up on glycemic control and key metabolic functions including pancreatic β-cell function (HOMA-β), insulin sensitivity (HOMA-α), and i

The Impact of the Common Elements Treatment Approach on HIV Treatment Outcomes Among Women Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence in South Africa: A Randomized Trial.

INTRODUCTION: In South Africa, which has the world's highest prevalence of HIV, intimate partner violence (IPV) and common mental health conditions are barriers to retention in HIV treatment and achieving viral suppression. The Common Elements Treatment Approach (CETA), a cognitive-behavioural-therapy-based intervention designed for lay healthcare worker delivery, is effective in reducing mental and behavioural health problems but has not been trialled for effectiveness in improving HIV outcomes. We conducted a randomized control trial to evaluate the effectiveness of CETA in improving HIV tre

Technology-Enabled Patient and Physician Activation to Enhance Skin Cancer Screening After HCT: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) have an increased risk of skin cancer, yet adherence to recommended skin self-examination (SSE) and annual physician skin examinations is low. Scalable strategies to improve screening in this high-risk population are needed. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial of 720 adult survivors of HCT enrolled between October 30, 2020, and December 13, 2023. Participants received remotely delivered print materials and 12 educational text messages over 9 months (patient activation and education [PAE]). In the PA

Internet-Delivered Psychological Treatment for Parents With Health Anxiety by Proxy: Replicated Randomized Single-Case Experimental Design.

BACKGROUND: Health anxiety by proxy is characterized by ruminations about severe illness in one's child that can cause severe distress in affected parents. Health anxiety by proxy may lead to repeated unnecessary medical consultations and checking the child's body for symptoms, as well as heightened attention to their child's behavior, sign of illness, and bodily symptoms. It has been hypothesized that health anxiety by proxy may pose a risk for transmission of maladaptive symptom coping and health anxiety from the parent to their child. In spite of this, no targeted treatment has previously b

Clinical and cost-effectiveness of individualised exercises and foot orthoses in the treatment of plantar heel pain: protocol for the TREADON randomised multi-arm multi-stage adaptive trial.

BACKGROUND: Plantar heel pain (PHP) is the most common soft tissue foot condition and impairs mobility, physical function, ability to work, and quality of life. Systematic reviews highlight a need for high-quality randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of exercises and orthoses for PHP. OBJECTIVES: To determine the clinical and cost-effectiveness of individualised exercises and/or prefabricated foot orthoses plus self-management advice (SMA) compared to SMA alone in adults with PHP. METHODS: A multi-centre four-arm two-stage adaptive parallel-group RCT with internal pilot. Up to 696 participant

Study protocol of a randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy of the "PrEPare for Work" intervention to enhance PrEP uptake and optimize adherence for HIV prevention among male sex workers in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: Male sex workers (MSWs), specifically cisgender men who exchange sex for money, goods, drugs, or other items of value with other cisgender men, are at high risk for HIV infection. Compared to men not engaged in sex work, MSWs are more likely to engage in frequent condomless sex with paying and non-paying sexual partners. While MSWs are often included as a subgroup of gay and bisexual men, data show that a large proportion identify as heterosexual; additionally, most MSWs do not identify as "sex workers." This places MSWs in a unique position where they may not engage with tradition

Teleintervention's effects on breastfeeding in low-income women in high income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Many mothers in high-income countries (HIC) do not breastfeed to the World Health Organisation's recommendation of two years. This is particularly true for low-income women (LIW). They often face additional socio-structural barriers that encourage early discontinuation and are inadequately supported by current healthcare interventions. Teleinterventions are flexible and widely used following the global pandemic and increase maternal autonomy over intervention delivery. They show promise in improving other maternal conditions in LIW, including postpartum depression. Teleintervention

trips4health: a single-blinded randomised controlled trial incentivising adult public transport use for physical activity gain.

BACKGROUND: Public transport users tend to accumulate more physical activity than non-users; however, whether physical activity is increased by financially incentivising public transport use is unknown. The trips4health study aimed to determine the impact of an incentive-based public transport intervention on physical activity. METHODS: A single-blinded randomised control trial of a 16-week incentive-based intervention involved Australian adults who were infrequent bus users (≥ 18 years; used bus ≤ 2 times/week) split equally into intervention and control groups. Digital Phenotyping for Monitoring Mental Disorders: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the impact and spread of mental illness and made health services difficult to access; therefore, there is a need for remote, pervasive forms of mental health monitoring. Digital phenotyping is a new approach that uses measures extracted from spontaneous interactions with smartphones (eg, screen touches or movements) or other digital devices as markers of mental status. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using digital phenotyping for predicting relapse or exacerbation of symptoms in patients with mental disorders through
