Density and behavior of capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) Amblyomma sculptum and Amblyomma dubitatum with notes on Rickettsia bellii infection: Assessing human exposure risk.

In several urban and peri‑urban areas of Brazil, populations of Amblyomma sculptum and Amblyomma dubitatum ticks are maintained by capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris). In some of these areas, this host and these tick species are associated with Brazilian spotted fever (BSF), a lethal human disease caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii. In this work, we evaluated the risk of human exposure to these tick species using four collection techniques to discern host-seeking behavior. The study was carried out in 10 urban sites inhabited by capybaras in Uberlândia, a BSF-free municipality in

Molecular characterization of Anaplasmataceae in Turkmen horses (Akhal-Teke breed) and ticks in racetracks, Iran.

Due to the abundance of ticks on open grassy surfaces, racetracks may represent ideal scenarios for tick-borne pathogens. Therefore, in 2024/2025 Turkmen horses (Akhal-Teke breed) and ticks collected by dragging in paddocks of Iran were screened for Anaplasmataceae using Sanger sequencing of 16S rRNA, TRP36 and dsb genes. Amongst 200 horses, 11 (5.5 %) tested positive without signs/symptoms, being 8 (4 %) for Ehrlichia canis and 3 (1.5 %) for Anaplasma ovis; no difference in prevalence was found by gender and age (p > 0.05). All ticks were identified as Hyalomma asiaticum and Haemaphysalis sul

Investigation on Babesia, Theileria and Anaplasma species circulating in cattle and associated ticks in selected areas of Northern and Southern Benin.

This study investigated the circulation of Babesia, Theileria, and Anaplasma species in cattle and associated ticks across selected sites of Northern and Southern Benin. Between June 2021 and March 2022, blood samples from 81 cattle and 2311 specimens of ticks were collected. Blood samples and a selected number of ticks (n = 245) were analysed using molecular methods. Anaplasma spp. showed the highest prevalence in cattle (75.3%), with phylogenetic analysis suggesting the co-circulation of multiple species, including clusters related to Anaplasma platys, Anaplasma marginale, Anaplasma ovis, an

A cross-sectional survey to establish Theileria parva prevalence and vector control at the wildlife-livestock interface, Northern Tanzania.

East Coast fever (ECF) in cattle is caused by the protozoan parasite Theileria parva, transmitted by Rhipicephalus appendiculatus ticks. In cattle ECF is often fatal, causing annual losses >$500 million across its range. The African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is the natural host for T. parva but the transmission dynamics between wild hosts and livestock are poorly understood. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of T. parva in cattle, in a 30 km zone adjacent to the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania where livestock and buffalo co-exist, and to ascertain how livestock keepers controlled

Monitoring the expansion of Dermacentor reticulatus and occurrence of canine babesiosis in Poland in 2016-2018.

BACKGROUND: The significance of tick-borne diseases has increased considerably in recent years. Because of the unique distribution of the tick species Dermacentor reticulatus in Poland, comprising two expanding populations, Eastern and Western that are separated by a Dermacentor-free zone, it is important to conduct studies on the process of tick expansion and emergence of canine babesiosis. The main aim of the current study was to monitor the expansion of D. reticulatus populations from spring 2016 to autumn 2018 to determine (1) the actual geographical range of this tick species, and (2) and

Ticks are more suitable than red foxes for monitoring zoonotic tick-borne pathogens in northeastern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Northeastern Italy is a hotspot for several tick-borne pathogens, transmitted to animals and humans mainly by Ixodes ricinus. Here we compare the results of molecular monitoring of ticks and zoonotic TBPs over a six-year period, with the monitoring of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in an endemic area. RESULTS: In the period 2011-2016, 2,578 ticks were collected in 38 sites of 20 municipalities of Belluno Province. Individual adults (264), pooled larvae (n = 330) and nymphs (n = 1984) were screened for tick-borne encephalitis virus, Borrelia burgdorferi (s.l.), Rickettsia spp., Babesia

Melting pot of tick-borne zoonoses: the European hedgehog contributes to the maintenance of various tick-borne diseases in natural cycles urban and suburban areas.

BACKGROUND: European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) are urban dwellers and host both Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes hexagonus. These ticks transmit several zoonotic pathogens like Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato), Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia helvetica, Borrelia miyamotoi and "Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis". It is unclear to what extent hedgehogs in (sub) urban areas contribute to the presence of infected ticks in these areas, which subsequently pose a risk for acquiring a tick-borne disease. Therefore, it is important to investigate to what extent hedgehogs contribute to the enzoot

Monitoring human babesiosis emergence through vector surveillance New England, USA.

Human babesiosis is an emerging tick-borne disease caused by the intraerythrocytic protozoan Babesia microti. Its geographic distribution is more limited than that of Lyme disease, despite sharing the same tick vector and reservoir hosts. The geographic range of babesiosis is expanding, but knowledge of its range is incomplete and relies exclusively on reports of human cases. We evaluated the utility of tick-based surveillance for monitoring disease expansion by comparing the ratios of the 2 infections in humans and ticks in areas with varying B. microti endemicity. We found a close associatio

The effectiveness of permethrin-treated deer stations for control of the Lyme disease vector Ixodes scapularis on Cape Cod and the islands: a five-year experiment.

BACKGROUND: The use of animal host-targeted pesticide application to control blacklegged ticks, which transmit the Lyme disease bacterium between wildlife hosts and humans, is receiving increased attention as an approach to Lyme disease risk management. Included among the attractive features of host-targeted approaches is the reduced need for broad-scale pesticide usage. In the eastern USA, one of the best-known of these approaches is the corn-baited "4-poster" deer feeding station, so named because of the four pesticide-treated rollers that surround the bait troughs. Wildlife visitors to thes

Lyme disease: self-regulation and pathogen invasion.

Ecological interactions underlying the epidemic of Lyme disease involve a spirochete, a tick (with larval, nymph and adult stages), and two (or more) vertebrate hosts. Juvenile ticks ordinarily feed on mice; adult ticks feed on deer. Mice acquire the spirochete from infected nymphs and then pass the infection to larvae of the next tick generation. Lyme disease may result when a human is inadvertently bitten by an infectious nymph. Our model of the Lyme phenomenon counts the total number of ticks in each stage, the numbers of infected ticks by stage, and the number of infected mice. We fix the

[Distribution of dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus Latreille, 1806) in Italy: a public health problem].

The dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus Latreille, 1806 (Acari: Ixodidae), is a public health problem since it is widely distributed in Italy and because of its role in the transmission of many pathogens to man and dog which is its preferred host. This review deals with the main aspects of the biology and ecology of Rh. sanguineus habitat, developmental time, distribution and seasonality, behaviour and vector competence. Moreover, the preminent role of Rh, sanguineus in the transmission of boutonneuse fever is discussed.

Plasma high density lipoprotein in anemic cattle infected with Theileria sergenti.

Changes in plasma concentration of lipid composition were analysed in cattle with anemia due to Theileria sergenti infection. Plasma levels of phospholipids, cholesterol, free cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, and vitamin E decreased to 40-67% of the pre-infection levels, corresponding to the decrease of PCV due to the infection. However, no definite changes were detected in plasma level of triglyceride. By gradient centrifugation, it was confirmed that lipid components, other than triglyceride, occur in high density lipoprotein (HDL) and these decreases lowered the HDL value.

The spirochetal etiology of Lyme disease.

We recovered a newly recognized spirochete from the blood, skin lesions (erythema chronicum migrans [ECM]), or cerebrospinal fluid of 3 of 56 patients with Lyme disease and from 21 of 110 nymphal or adult lxodes dammini ticks in Connecticut. These isolates and the original one from l. dammini appeared to have the same morphologic and immunologic features. In patients, specific IgM antibody titers usually reached a peak between the third and sixth week after the onset of disease; specific IgG antibody titers rose slowly and were generally highest months later when arthritis was present. Among 4
