Knowledge of objects' physical properties implicitly guides attention during visual search.

Our interactions with the world are guided by our understanding of objects' physical properties. When packing groceries, we place fragile items on top of more durable ones and position sharp corners so they will not puncture the bags. However, physical properties are not always readily observable, and we often must rely on our knowledge of attributes such as weight, hardness, and slipperiness to guide our actions on familiar objects. Here, we asked whether our knowledge of physical properties not only shapes our actions but also guides our attention to the visual world. In a series of four vis

The perceptual learning of time-compressed speech: A comparison of training protocols with different levels of difficulty.

Speech perception can improve substantially with practice (perceptual learning) even in adults. Here we compared the effects of four training protocols that differed in whether and how task difficulty was changed during a training session, in terms of the gains attained and the ability to apply (transfer) these gains to previously un-encountered items (tokens) and to different talkers. Participants trained in judging the semantic plausibility of sentences presented as time-compressed speech and were tested on their ability to reproduce, in writing, the target sentences; trail-by-trial feedback

Effects of visual and cognitive interference on joint contributions in perturbed standing: a temporal and spectral analysis.

Postural balance requires using joint strategies which may be changed from normal conditions by interfering with the sensory information. The goal of the present study was to quantitatively evaluate the role of the joint mechanisms during perturbed stance. Visual and cognitive interference was imposed to sixteen healthy young males under rotational toes-down or up perturbations. Power spectral analysis was employed to distinguish the joint contribution and their in- or out-phase co-works. Results showed that addition of cognitive loads reduce the stability by increasing the center of mass (CoM

Time processing impairments in preschoolers at risk of developing difficulties in mathematics.

The occurrence of time processing problems in individuals with Development Dyscalculia (DD) has favored the view of a general magnitude system devoted to both numerical and temporal information. Yet, this scenario has been partially challenged by studies indicating that time difficulties can be attributed to poor calculation or counting skills, which can support reasoning on time in school-aged children and adults. Here, we tackle this debate by exploring the performance of young children before they fully develop the symbolic number system. Preschoolers at risk of developing DD were compared

Exercising in a hot environment: which T-shirt to wear?

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate thermoregulatory, cardiorespiratory, metabolic, and perceptual responses while running in a hot environment (31.7° ± 1.0°C; 42% ± 3% relative humidity) and wearing T-shirts made from different fiber types. METHODS: Eight well-trained men performed 4 tests wearing either a T-shirt made of 100% polyester with 4, 6, or 8 channels, or one made of 100% cotton. Each test consisted of 30 minutes running at 70% of peak oxygen uptake, followed by a ramp test to exhaustion and 15 minutes of recovery. RESULTS: There were no differences in skin, core,

Short-term motor and sensory outcomes in acquired nonaccommodative esotropia of childhood.

Information on the management of acquired nonaccommodative esotropia (ANAET) of childhood is incomplete. Most prior reports combine the results of patients with both accommodative and nonaccommodative esodeviations. The primary objective of this study was to describe the early postoperative motor and sensory results of children with acquired nonaccommodative esotropia. The medical records of 72 consecutive children with ANAET who underwent surgical correction at East Tennessee State University College of Medicine from August 1, 1995 through October 1, 2001 were retrospectively reviewed. The me

Relationship between intensity and reaction time in normal-hearing infants and adults.

OBJECTIVE: Reaction time (RT) to sound is known to be related to loudness in adult listeners. The purpose of this study was to determine whether infants' RT to sound decreases systematically with intensity as it does in adults. DESIGN: RT was measured for 24 6- to 9-mo-old infants and 11 19- to 26-yr-old adults. All participants were normal hearing, naïve listeners. The stimuli consisted of 4000 and 1000 Hz pure tones presented to the right ear through an insert earphone. Stimulus intensities ranged in 10 dB steps from 40 to 80 dB SPL for adults and 50 to 90 dB SPL for infants. Infant respons

Agnosia for object orientation: naming and mental rotation evidence.

We have previously reported the performance of a patient (NL) who could recognize objects, but appeared to lack knowledge of their orientation. These results were interpreted as evidence that NL had isolated access to a viewpoint-independent (ventral stream) object recognition system. However, because NL's responses on naming tasks were not timed, it was not possible to establish whether he showed the same pattern of reaction time performance generally accepted as evidence of a 'mental rotation' strategy in neurologically normal subjects. Here we report NL's performance on two reaction time ta

Gap detection thresholds as a function of tonal duration for younger and older listeners.

Twenty normal hearing younger and twenty older adults in the early stages of presbycusis, but with relatively normal hearing at 2 kHz, were asked to discriminate between the presence versus absence of a gap between two equal-duration tonal markers. The duration of each marker was constant within a block of trials but varied between 0.83 and 500 ms across blocks. Notched-noise, centered at 2 kHz, was used to mask on- and off-transients. Gap detection thresholds of older adults were markedly higher than those of younger adults for marker durations of less than 250 ms but converged on those of yo

Idiosyncratic characteristics of saccadic eye movements when viewing different visual environments.

Eye position was recorded in different viewing conditions to assess whether the temporal and spatial characteristics of saccadic eye movements in different individuals are idiosyncratic. Our aim was to determine the degree to which oculomotor control is based on endogenous factors. A total of 15 naive subjects viewed five visual environments: (1) The absence of visual stimulation (i.e. a dark room); (2) a repetitive visual environment (i.e. simple textured patterns); (3) a complex natural scene; (4) a visual search task; and (5) reading text. Although differences in visual environment had sign

Shifts in perceived position following adaptation to visual motion.

Where do we perceive an object to be when it is moving? Nijhawan [1] has reported that if a stationary test pattern is briefly flashed in spatial alignment with a moving one, the moving element actually appears displaced in the direction in which it is moving. Nijhawan postulates that this may be the result of a mechanism that predicts the future position of the moving element so as to compensate for the fact that the element will have moved position from the time at which the light left it to the time at which the observer becomes aware of it (as a result of the finite time taken for neural t

Coherent motion detection and letter position encoding.

We identified 24 'good' and 24 'poor' coherent motion detectors from an unselected sample of young adults. The two groups were matched for reading ability, age and IQ. All subjects carried out two tasks in which optimal performance depended on accurate letter position encoding: a lexical decision task and a primed reaction time task. We found that accurate letter position encoding was predicted by performance in the motion detection task. Since coherent motion detection depends on input from the magnocellular pathway, these findings suggest that information carried by the magnocellular system

Vestibular-visual conflict in pitch and yaw planes in the squirrel monkey.

Direction conflicting vestibular and visual (optokinetic) stimuli either in the pitch or yaw plane were given to squirrel monkey subjects. The conflict sickness symptom score in the pitch plane was significantly higher than that in the yaw plane for the initial exposure session (p less than 0.01). A significant score difference was also encountered when the exposure sessions were repeated (p less than 0.05).

"I am not alone with tears": embodying stigma and longing among youth living with perinatally acquired HIV in Tanzania through a collaborative arts-based approach.

It is estimated that 4 million youth aged 15-24 years live with HIV globally, 85% of whom live in sub-Saharan Africa. For youth living with perinatally acquired HIV (YPHIV), stigma is frequently linked with negative health outcomes. YPHIV face distinct HIV stigma experiences across the lifespan, particularly because of the centrality of the family context in their HIV experience and the reality that they have lived with HIV since birth. Nevertheless, our understanding and measurement of stigma remains limited. One way to improve our understanding of HIV stigma for YPHIV is through in-depth exp

Seeing versus knowing: The temporal dynamics of real and implied colour processing in the human brain.

Colour is a defining feature of many objects, playing a crucial role in our ability to rapidly recognise things in the world around us and make categorical distinctions. For example, colour is a useful cue when distinguishing lemons from limes or blackberries from raspberries. That means our representation of many objects includes key colour-related information. The question addressed here is whether the neural representation activated by knowing that something is red is the same as that activated when we actually see something red, particularly in regard to timing. We addressed this question

Women's perceptions about seeing the ultrasound picture before an abortion.

OBJECTIVES: To gain a better understanding of women's perceptions and experiences of viewing the ultrasound (US) before an abortion. METHODS: This mixed-methods study included questionnaires and interviews. Women presenting for medical and surgical abortion at two urban abortion clinics completed questionnaires asking if they wished to view the US image and those women who had done so answered questions about their perceptions. A randomly selected ten women were interviewed six weeks later about their perceptions. The interviews were audio-taped, transcribed and analysed for salient themes.

Traumatic optic neuropathy: a review of 61 patients.

The outcome of traumatic optic neuropathy was evaluated following penetrating and blunt injuries to assess the effect of treatment options, including high-dose steroids, surgical intervention, and observation alone. Factors that affected improvement in visual acuity were identified and quantified. Sixty-one consecutive, nonrandomized patients presenting with visual loss after facial trauma between 1984 and 1996 were assessed for outcome. Pretreatment and posttreatment visual acuities were compared using a standard ophthalmologic conversion from the values of no light perception, light percepti
