Impact of mandibular third molars on angle fractures: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that the position and presence of mandibular third molars is associated with a high risk of mandibular angle fractures. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between the position and presence of mandibular third molars and mandibular angle fractures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study consisting of 256 patients who were admitted for treatment of mandibular fractures between January 2016 and January 2018 was undertaken. Patients' data and orthopantomogram radiographs were obtained from their medical record. The predictor variable

Micro-computed Tomography Assessment of Full Pulpotomy in a Mature Molar after Five Years: A Case Report.

The current case study evaluated the effect of vital pulp therapy on a human dental pulp after a long-term period using micro-computed tomography (MCT) for the first time. In the presented report, the successful outcomes of full pulpotomy using calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cement on an irreversible pulpitis case were documented clinically/radiographically over 5 years. Due to an unrestorable crown fracture at the 5-year recall, the tooth was extracted and evaluated by MCT; the images showed that CEM pulpotomy allowed the dental pulp to create complete dentinal bridges without pulp canal obli

Apicotomy: surgical management of maxillary dilacerated or ankylosed canines.

This clinical article reports a technique, apicotomy, for managing dilacerated or ankylosed canines. The records of 3 patients successfully treated with apicotomy are presented. Orthodontists observe clinically significant incidences of impacted maxillary canines in their daily practices. Several procedures have been described to bring an ankylosed, impacted tooth into occlusion. Luxation is the most widely used solution, but there are risks involved with that approach, and the success rate is low. Surgical repositioning has also been used, but morbidity is high, and the aggressiveness of the

Health considerations for oral piercing and the policies that influence them.

With the increase in popularity of piercings, the health care professional needs to be aware of the complications that can occur due to lack of regulations of the piercing establishments. Due to lack of training of piercing professionals and lack of enforcement of sterilization procedures, infection and life threatening complications can arise. Complications include, but are not limited to, hemorrhage, nerve damage, gingival recession, HIV, tongue swelling, tooth fracture, Bactermia, Ludwigs angina, increase salivary flow, jewelry aspiration, and localized infection. Texas requires an individu

A new flapless technique for crown lengthening after orthodontic extrusion.

Orthodontic extrusion (OE), which is performed in many different clinical situations to move a tooth or its periodontal tissues coronally, is often associated with supracrestal fiberotomy and root planing (OEFRP) or followed by surgical crown lengthening. The OEFRP procedure must be carried out every 2 weeks during the entire extrusive orthodontic phase, and precise control of the technique itself can be quite difficult, especially when this approach is to be performed on a limited portion of the root perimeter in teeth affected by angular defects. The aim of this study was to show a new nonsu

Bone health and oral health.

BACKGROUND: Low bone mass in the skeleton, which increases the risk of osteoporotic fracture, also may be associated with periodontal bone loss and tooth loss. Osteoporosis and periodontal disease share several common risk factors, including older age, smoking and perhaps insufficient dietary intakes of calcium and vitamin D. CONCLUSION: Research supports the idea that osteoporosis independently influences alveolar bone height loss. Strategies for reducing osteoporosis risk also may help retard alveolar bone loss. Meeting dietary intake recommendations for calcium and vitamin D is one strateg

The effect of the heights and thicknesses of the remaining root segments on buccal bone resorption in the socket-shield technique: An experimental study in dogs.

BACKGROUND: To date only a few studies have been done on the use of the socket-shield technique for preserving the resorption of the buccal bone in aesthetically sensitive sites. Besides, there have been no further studies on the effect of the heights and thicknesses of the remaining root segments on buccal bone resorption when using this method. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different heights and thicknesses of the remaining root segments on bone resorption in the socket-shield technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four healthy female beagle dogs were used in this

Guided Endodontic Management of Pulp Canal Obliteration in a Maxillary Canine with Root Resorption and Prior Iatrogenic Deviation: A Case Report.

This case report describes the successful guided endodontic treatment of a maxillary left canine (#23) with pulp canal obliteration (PCO) in a 30-year-old female patient. The patient had a history of orthodontic treatment and Le Fort I orthognathic surgery, both recognized as potential factors contributing to canal calcification. The patient had a history of a failed root canal treatment, contributing to incomplete canal instrumentation and iatrogenic damage (gouging) during access cavity preparation. The case was referred for completion of treatment. Upon referral, clinical and radiographic e

Glass science behind lithium silicate glass-ceramics.

OBJECTIVES: Lithium silicate-based glass ceramics have evolved as a paramount restorative material in restorative and prosthetic dentistry, exhibiting outstanding esthetic and mechanical performance. Along with subtractive machining techniques, this material class has conquered the market and satisfied the patients' needs for a long-lasting, excellent, and metal-free alternative for single tooth replacements and even smaller bridgework. Despite the popularity, not much is known about the material chemistry, microstructure and terminal behaviour. METHODS: This article combines a set of own exp

Ceramic inlays: is the inlay thickness an important factor influencing the fracture risk?

OBJECTIVES: It is still unclear whether the inlay thickness is an important factor influencing the fracture risk of ceramic inlays. As high tensile stresses increase the fracture risk of ceramic inlays, the objective of the present finite element method (FEM) study was to biomechanically analyze the correlation between inlay thickness (T) and the induced first principal stress. METHODS: Fourteen ceramic inlay models with varying thickness (0.7-2.0 mm) were generated. All inlays were combined with a CAD model of a first mandibular molar (tooth 46), including the PDL and a mandibular segment wh

Pyogenic infections in orthopedic surgery. Prevention and management.

A problem that confronts surgeons in clinical practice is that a patient may acquire new infections while in the hospital. When such infections occur they are predominantly staphylococcal and these bacteria are often, but not always resistant to penicillin, streptomycin and the tetracycline antibiotics. They are often but neither completely nor uniformly sensitive to the newer or less frequently used antimicrobial agents. The extension of antibiotic usage from proven situations to "routine" prophylaxis has been a widespread practice. There are many reasons to discourage and to reexamine the va

Effects of asfotase alfa on fracture healing of adult patient with hypophosphatasia and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare inherited disorder caused by ALPL gene mutations, with fracture nonunion being a serious complication. This study investigated the effects of teriparatide and asfotase alfa (AA) on femoral fracture healing of an adult patient with HPP, accompanied with a literature review. METHODS: A 37-year-old woman wheelchair-bound was diagnosed with HPP due to an extremely low serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level (4-10 U/L), who suffered from bilateral femur pain and non-union of femoral shaft fractures on both sides. Compound heterozygous missense mutations (

Retrospective Analysis of Immediate Implants: A Prism with a Different Dimension.

Any tooth loss can be addressed for rehabilitation by different types of prosthesis. But, for certain conditions patients and dentists expect immediate results. An immediate implant falls into such a category: The implant is placed immediately into the extracted socket with the expectation of a quick fix. The present study was designed to retrospectively analyze the factors or choices that lead to immediate implant placement, prevailing conditions during the implant surgical phase, and conditions in the implant prosthetic phase. The study indicates fractured teeth as the most chosen case for i

Restoration of maxillary anterior esthetics using lava all-ceramic fixed dental prostheses.

The success of all-ceramic crowns and increased patient demand for metal-free, tooth-colored restorations has led to the development of many different restorative systems for all-ceramic fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). The most recent core materials for all-ceramic FDPs are the yttrium-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP)-based materials. Yttrium oxide is a stabilizing oxide added to pure zirconia to stabilize it at room temperature and to generate a multiphase material known as partially stabilized zirconia. This exhibits very high flexural strength and fracture toughness along with good b
