Self-concept development in children with limb differences: A scoping review.

Having a visible physical difference, such as a limb difference, can have a significant impact on a child's psychosocial development, as children with limb differences may experience negative psychosocial sequelae. The aim of this scoping review was to investigate the findings of literature pertaining to self-concept of children with limb differences. Using the PRISMA ScR guidelines, a literature search was conducted in Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO and PubMed databases. Nine articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Two studies focused on evaluating self-concept, wherea

Epidemiology of acetabular fractures in elderly patients and the effect of various management options on the outcomes. A comprehensive narrative review.

Owing to the expected increase in the world's elderly population (>65 years old), and the concomitant osteoporosis in this particular population, fragility fractures of the pelvis and the acetabulum is becoming a real concern, which could be life-threatening. In the current review, we aimed to discuss the various epidemiological characteristics of geriatric acetabular fractures, management options, and the outcomes. For the review synthesis, we searched PubMed to select the most relevant and updated articles published from various areas and institutions. Geriatric acetabular fractures are main

Blood sampling in adult critical care: a mixed methods study.

There are few studies exploring blood sampling practice in critical care. In particular, the views of nursing staff are missing from the literature. The aim of this mixed methods study was to understand blood sampling practice at a single centre National Specialist Orthopaedic NHS trust in London, England. Following an audit of sampling practice over a four-week period, two focus group discussions explored nurses' views and experiences. Daily blood samples were in keeping with volumes reported in other studies of a similar size and nature, with routine sampling practice common. Although we did

A quality improvement project addressing the underreporting of delirium in hip fracture patients.

INTRODUCTION: After discovering a low incidence of delirium for hip fracture patients at our institution, we evaluated if this was due to underreporting and, if so, where process errors occurred. METHODS: Hip fracture patients aged ≥60 with a diagnosis of delirium were identified. Chart-Based Delirium Identification Instrument (CHART-DEL) identified missed diagnoses of delirium. Process maps were created based off staff interviews and observations. RESULTS: The incidence of delirium was 15.3% (N = 176). Within a random sample (n = 98), 15 patients (15.5%) were diagnosed, while 20 (24.7%) wen

Impact of compression stockings on wound healing and complications in ankle fractures: A retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Ankle fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) have a high incidence of wound complications. By reducing oedema, wound complications can, in theory, be minimized. This study investigates the impact of compression stocking (CS) on such complications after treatment with ORIF. METHODS: Compression stockings were introduced as a standard postoperative treatment for all ankle fracture patients treated operatively with ORIF on February 1, 2013. Data were retrieved from medical records two years prior to and following the introduction date. The primary outcom

Evaluation of the acceptability of a sphygmomanometer device in knee extension training following surgical procedures of the knee.

BACKGROUND: The postoperative treatment after a standard surgical intervention such as knee arthroplasty, proximal tibial osteotomy or supracondylar osteotomy, can have an important impact on the overall treatment outcome. In most cases, outcomes are positively effected by patients receiving physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Basic movements and range of motion need to be learnt. Self-responsible behaviour, which is similar to exercise programs in sports, needs to be supported. However, in most cases the transfer of training techniques into successful and desired postoperative care is not

Stair negotiation as a rehabilitation intervention for enhancing recovery following total hip and knee replacement surgery.

BACKGROUND: Total hip replacement (THR) and total knee replacement (TKR) are common orthopaedic procedures. However, an optimal programme for post-operative rehabilitation has yet to be established. Stair negotiation is a challenging, habitual task, regularly used as a post-operative functional outcome measure; yet as a physical rehabilitation intervention it appears to be rarely used. AIM: The review purpose was to investigate the effectiveness of stair climbing as a rehabilitation intervention for THR and TKR patients. METHODS: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Science Citation Index, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus
