BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy (MIVAT) proved to be safe and effective in the treatment of both benign diseases and malignancies. We report our experience in thyroid surgery in pediatric patients.
METHODS: From October 1998 to December 2005, 35 patients (27 females and 8 males) underwent MIVAT for thyroid disease. The mean age was 14.0 years (range, 8-18 years); mean ecographically estimated thyroid volume was 11.13 mL (range, 8-25 mL).
RESULTS: A total thyroidectomy was performed in 22 patients, whereas lobectomy was performed in 13. Two patients of the latter g

The article analyses an experience with treatment of 96 patients with acute intestinal obstruction caused by peritoneal commissures. The technique of laparoscopic operations and principles of their realization are described. The observation of these principles is shown to give high effectiveness and safety of endovideosurgical interventions for acute intestinal obstruction. Their advantages consist in minimal invasiveness, short periods of postoperative rehabilitation and little frequency of postoperative complications.

A 3-month-old male presented with a 2-month history of intermittent shortness of breath with chest retractions and wheezing which worsened with feeding. The patient was diagnosed with bronchiolitis during one of several hospital admissions and treated with bronchodilators without success. On the third hospitalization, the patient was diagnosed with right-sided diaphragmatic eventration. Surgical intervention consisted of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) with plication of the right diaphragm. The patient was discharged on the 2nd postoperative day. At the clinical visit 2 weeks posto

Systematic bilateral neck exploration remains the gold standard for the treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism. Techniques of miniinvasive parathyroidectomy have been developing on the basis of the improvement of preoperative localization methods. The miniinvasive videoasissted parathyroidectomy was performed in 17 from 123 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. All patients were examined using ultrasonography and sestamibi scintigraphy; the level of inactive parathormone was monitored peroperatively. One patient required a conversion to the bilateral neck exploration. Authors emphasize

The aim of the present study was to determine the impact of various pleurodesis procedures on post-operative morbidity and late recurrence rate after surgical treatment of Vanderschueren's stage III primary spontaneous pneumothorax. Between January 2001 and June 2004, 208 consecutive patients (169 male and 39 female; mean (range) age 25 (12-39) yrs) were submitted to 220 video-assisted thoracoscopic surgical procedures for primary spontaneous pneumothorax. All patients underwent apical lung resection; 112 were assigned at random to mechanical pleural abrasion (group A) and 108 to apical pleure

Intralobar pulmonary sequestration associated with asymptomatic aspergillosis is a rare case. We describe the case of a 65-year-old woman with intrapulmonary sequestration, anomalous systemic arterial supply to the left lower lobe and aspergillosis who underwent left lower lobectomy and ligation of an anomalous artery by Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). Pathological examination showed the parenchymal distortion and chronic inflammation. Aspergillus were found in the cyst. VATS lobectomy for intralobar pulmonary sequestration is a safe and valid procedure.

This study was undertaken to determine if better results could be achieved by comparing the results of a thoracic sympathetic ramicotomy (division of rami communicantes) with a conventional thoracic sympathicotomy (division of sympathetic trunk) for treating essential hyperhidrosis. From August 2001 to February 2002, 29 consecutive patients underwent surgery of the sympathetic nerves in order to treat severe essential hyperhidrosis. Of these patients, a ramicotomy was performed under VATS (VATS-R) in 13 patients, sympathicotomy under VATS (VATS-S) in 13, a unilateral ramicotomy and contralater

Mediastinal exploration to resect ectopic parathyroid is required in approximately 2% of all cases of hyperparathyroidism. Traditionally, it has been performed through a midsternotomy or thoracotomy. A few reports about thoracoscopic resection of mediastinal parathyroid were published recently. We report here successful video-assisted thoracoscopic resection (VATS) of a mediastinal parathyroid and present a review of all previously reported cases. A 42-year-old woman presented with spontaneous fracture of the left femur and hypercalcemia. She had previously undergone cervical parathyroidectomy

Acute and chronic otitis externa and otitis media are common disorders in dogs and cats. In combination with other diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, the video-otoscope is a useful and effective tool in the management of clinical cases. The enhanced illumination and magnification provide the practitioner with more detailed information for diagnosis and prognosis, and the configuration of the working channel facilitates sampling, improves efficacy of cleaning procedures, and decreases risks of iatrogenic injury to structures of the middle and inner ear. Trans-sternal closure of the bronchial stump is an effective procedure to treat bronchopleural fistula after pneumonectomy. The paper reports a modified video-assisted Abruzzini technique that, maintaining the same results, should determine a lower surgical risk. Three simultaneous approaches are used: cervical video-mediastinoscopy, right anterior parasternal mediastinotomy, left parasternal thoracoscopic access. The dissection of the bronchial stump is performed entirely through the mediastinotomy approach after having controlled mediastinal vessels. The bronchial stump reamputation is achie

Surgical treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax can be done through a thoracotomy or a video-thoracoscopic approach. Although the videothoracoscopic technique is currently popular it is not obviously superior to a more traditional axillary thoracotomy approach. We compared our recent experience with both techniques to determine the optimal surgical treatment for spontaneous pneumothoraces. A retrospective review of 79 patients treated surgically (34 thoracotomy and 45 thoracoscopy) for spontaneous pneumothoraces was done. Patients were treated between 1991 and 1997. Patients older than 60 years

To reduce pulmonary complications after esophagectomy, the transthoracic procedure should be shortened or totally avoided. Transcervical approach assisted by mediastinoscope for the upper mediastinum may be advantageous for this purpose. We carried out video-assisted transcervical mediastinal dissection (VATCMD) as part of totally non-transthoracic radical esophagectomy. A single-port laparoscopy device was adopted to a small cervical incision and the mediastinum was inflated with a positive pressure of 6 to 10 mmHg. Without assistant's retractor, the upper mediastinum and partially the middle

OBJECTIVES: Although video-assisted mediastinoscopic lymphadenectomy (VAMLA) has greatly increased the accuracy of mediastinal staging, its clinical value as a therapeutic tool for complete mediastinal lymph node dissection in the treatment of left-sided lung cancer is not well elucidated.
METHODS: We identified the consecutive 649 patients with left-sided lung cancer undergoing minimally invasive pulmonary resection between July 2002 and June 2013. Among them, 225 patients underwent VAMLA combined with pulmonary resection (VAMLA + VATS group), while the remaining 424 patients underwent VATS

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Reports are limited on video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for lung malignancy of patients with situs inversus totalis (SIT). Patients with SIT have significant anatomic differences with implications that are important for surgery, anesthesia, and nursing to understand in order to provide care for this patient population.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 64-year-old man with SIT and lung adenocarcinoma needed flexible bronchoscopy and wedge resection of a 9×8 mm adenocarcinoma in the right upper lobe and underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery.

Uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is the least invasive available approach for lung cancer resection. Uniportal VATS anatomical resection is feasible and safe, and offers with good outcomes, especially when performed by experienced surgeons. However, sleeve lobectomy is a more challenging procedure and the uniportal VATS approach is rarely reported. This video tutorial illustrates a uniportal VATS right upper sleeve lobectomy and lymph node dissection on a 66-years old smoker patient with non-small cell lung cancer involving the right upper lobe bronchus.

Left sleeve pneumonectomy is a rarer intervention compared with right sleeve pneumonectomy. It is a challenging surgical therapeutic strategy even when performed through open thoracotomy. Here, we report a case of uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) left sleeve pneumonectomy in a patient with non-small cell lung cancer. The tumor, located at the opening of left upper lobe bronchus, submucosally invaded the orifice of lower lobe extending upward to 4 to 5 cartilage rings of the left main bronchus and to the level of the carina. Left sleeve pneumonectomy and airway reconstructi
