Technique for external repositioning of the paralyzed vocal cord with silastic implant.

A technique is introduced for vocal cord mobilization in which a tunnel is made through the inner perichondrium of the thyroid cartilage and a medical grade silicone is placed from the upper part of the thyroid cartilage and pulled out over the cricothyroid membrane. This technique was performed on six dogs, and results were compared to those of a modified laryngoplasty performed on another six dogs. The technique was refined on 20 cadavers and finally performed on five adult patients with more than 1 year of vocal cord paralysis. Results of this technique suggest that it constitutes a good al

[Functional electrostimulation of the denervated posticus muscle in an animal experiment: histo- and biochemical results].

Histochemical and biochemical investigations have been carried out in 2 sheep following unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis and direct electrical stimulation of the denervated posticus muscles. The stimulation effect was determined histochemically (standard ATP-ase staining) and compared with the fibre pattern of normal posticus muscles. In addition, one-dimensional gel electrophoresis of myosin heavy-chain isoforms was carried out and correlated with the histochemical results. A dramatic increase of type I fibres could be seen after long-term low-frequency direct electrical stimula

Evolution of vocal patterns: tuning hindbrain circuits during species divergence.

The neural circuits underlying divergent courtship behaviors of closely related species provide a framework for insight into the evolution of motor patterns. In frogs, male advertisement calls serve as unique species identifiers and females prefer conspecific to heterospecific calls. Advertisement calls of three relatively recently (∼8.5 Mya) diverged species - Xenopus laevis, X. petersii and X. victorianus - include rapid trains of sound pulses (fast trills). We show that while fast trills are similar in pulse rate (∼60 pulses s-1) across the three species, they differ in call duration and pe

Oxytocin and vasopressin enhance responsiveness to infant stimuli in adult marmosets.

The neuropeptides oxytocin (OT) and arginine-vasopressin (AVP) have been implicated in modulating sex-specific responses to offspring in a variety of uniparental and biparental rodent species. Despite the large body of research in rodents, the effects of these hormones in biparental primates are less understood. Marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) belong to a clade of primates with a high incidence of biparental care and also synthesize a structurally distinct variant of OT (proline instead of leucine at the 8th amino acid position; Pro(8)-OT). We examined the roles of the OT and AVP systems

Long-term exercising video-endoscopic examination of the upper airway following laryngoplasty surgery: a prospective cross-sectional study of 41 horses.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: To investigate upper respiratory tract function in horses, previously undergoing laryngoplasty (LP), using exercising video-endoscopy. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate arytenoid abduction and stability, diagnose any concurrent upper airway problems, and correlate these with the owners' perception of success. METHODS: Horses undergoing LP during a 6-year period at one hospital were initially included. Those available for re-examination were exercised for a duration and intensity considered maximal for their discipline using an over-ground endoscope. Resting and exercising

Socially modulated cell proliferation is independent of gonadal steroid hormones in the brain of the adult green treefrog (Hyla cinerea).

Gonadal steroid hormones have been shown to influence adult neurogenesis in addition to their well-defined role in regulating social behavior. Adult neurogenesis consists of several processes including cell proliferation, which can be studied via 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) labeling. In a previous study we found that social stimulation altered both cell proliferation and levels of circulating gonadal steroids, leaving the issue of cause/effect unclear. In this study, we sought to determine whether socially modulated BrdU-labeling depends on gonadal hormone changes. We investigated this usin

Development of affinity to the stockperson in lambs from two breeds.

The interactions between genetic and environmental factors on the development of lamb affinity to humans was assessed on 48 animals from two breeds (Gentile di Puglia and Comisana) and two treatments (Gentled and Not Gentled) producing 4 groups (GPg, GPng, Cg, Cng, respectively). The Gentile di Puglia and Comisana gentled animals were subjected to a period of training consisting of gently handling each lamb for 5 min three times a day for the first week and then twice a week for three additional weeks. The gentling procedure included both tactile and visual/auditory interactions. At 30-32 days

Sexually dimorphic effects of postnatal allopregnanolone on the development of anxiety behavior after early deprivation.

Stress early in life exerts persistent detrimental effects on brain development. In this experiment, a rodent model of child neglect, early deprivation (ED), was used to investigate the role of the neurosteroid allopregnanolone [AlloP; 3alpha-hydroxy-5alpha-pregnan-20-one (3alpha,5alpha-THP)] in the development of anxiety behavior. Subjects were either undisturbed controls or ED: separated individually for 6 h per day from postnatal day (PN) 2 to 6. Control and ED subjects were also either noninjected, vehicle-injected or injected with 5 mg/kg AlloP prior to the isolation. At PN 7, responses t

Deep brain stimulation of medial forebrain bundle modulates noradrenergic activity and feedforward inhibition in rodent model of depression.

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) of the superolateral medial forebrain bundle has shown promising long-term anti-depressant effects in treatment-resistant depression patients, although the mechanisms are not clear. The study explored medial forebrain bundle DBS mediated modulation of central noradrenaline transmission in a rodent depression model, the Flinders Sensitive Line (FSL), and in controls, Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. In vivo noradrenergic signaling in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and nucleus accumbens (NAc) and ultrasonic vocalization were monitored during unilateral mfb-DBS across diverse s

Oxytocin administration modulates the complex type of ultrasonic vocalisation of mice pups prenatally exposed to valproic acid.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by communication disability with no curative treatment. Maternal separation-induced ultrasonic vocalisation (USV) was widely used to assess communication disability between pups and dams. Particularly, USV calls in many genetically modified ASD model mice were altered. Previously, we demonstrated that mice pups exposed to valproic acid in utero (VPA pups) showed decreased number of USV calls on postnatal day 11 and were rescued by subcutaneous injection of oxytocin. However, the qualitative change of USV calls by oxy

Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulation in Early Life Changes Synaptic Plasticity and Improves Symptoms in a Valproic Acid-Induced Rat Model of Autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder characterized by social behavior deficit in childhood without satisfactory medical intervention. Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) is a noninvasive technique derived from acupuncture and has been shown to have similar therapeutic effects in many diseases. Valproic acid- (VPA-) induced ASD is a known model of ASD in rats. The therapeutic efficacy of TEAS was evaluated in the VPA model of ASD in the present study. The offspring of a VPA-treated rat received TEAS in the early life stage followed by a series of examinat

An Excised Canine Model of Anterior Glottic Web and Its Acoustic, Aerodynamic, and High-speed Measurements.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to build an excised anterior glottic web (AGW) model and study the basic voice-related mechanisms of the AGW through investigating the acoustic, aerodynamic, and vibratory properties. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Overall, four conditions were tested for each of the eight canine larynges used. At baseline, 10%, 20%, and 33% occlusion (as determined by the placement of the suture), acoustic, aerodynamic, and high-speed video data were collected while each larynx was phonated in a soundproof booth. RESULTS: The phonation threshold pressure (PTP) and the phonation thresh

Vocalizations associated with anxiety and fear in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).

Vocalizations of common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) were examined under experimental situations related to fear or anxiety. When marmosets were isolated in an unfamiliar environment, they frequently vocalized "tsik-egg" calls, which were the combination calls of 'tsik' followed by several 'egg'. Tsik-egg calls were also observed after treatment with the anxiogenic drug FG-7142 (20mg/kg, sc). In contrast, when marmosets were exposed to predatory stimuli as fear-evoking situations, they frequently vocalized tsik solo calls as well as tsik-egg calls. These results suggest that marmosets dissoci

Equipotent subanesthetic concentrations of sevoflurane and xenon preventing cold-stimulated vocalization of neonatal rats.

BACKGROUND: The effects of inhaled anesthetics on the developing brain are studied using neonatal rodents exposed to fractions of minimum alveolar concentration (to avoid cardiorespiratory compromise). However, these fractions cannot be assumed to be equipotent. Xenon's anesthetic and neuroprotective properties warrant investigation in these models. Therefore, equipotent, subanesthetic concentrations of inhaled anesthetics are needed. METHODS: Forty-eight Wistar rats (Charles River Laboratories, Kent, United Kingdom) on postnatal day 9 were randomized to eight concentrations of inhaled anesth

Echolocation call intensity and directionality in flying short-tailed fruit bats, Carollia perspicillata (Phyllostomidae).

The directionality of bat echolocation calls defines the width of bats' sonar "view," while call intensity directly influences detection range since adequate sound energy must impinge upon objects to return audible echoes. Both are thus crucial parameters for understanding biosonar signal design. Phyllostomid bats have been classified as low intensity or "whispering bats," but recent data indicate that this designation may be inaccurate. Echolocation beam directionality in phyllostomids has only been measured through electrode brain-stimulation of restrained bats, presumably excluding active b

Long-term ovariectomy alters social and anxious behaviors in semi-free ranging Japanese macaques.

Symptoms of anxiety and depression often occur in young women after complete hysterectomy and in older women during menopause. There are many variables that are hard to control in human population studies, but that are absent to a large extent in stable nonhuman primate troops. However, macaques exhibit depressive and anxious behaviors in response to similar situations as humans such as isolation, stress, instability or aggression. Therefore, we hypothesized that examination of behavior in ovariectomized individuals in a stable macaque troop organized along matriarchal lineages and in which in

Beak gape dynamics during song in the zebra finch.

Bird song is a complex communication behavior that requires the coordination of several motor systems. Sound is produced in the syrinx and then modified by the upper vocal tract, but the specific nature and dynamics of this modification are not well understood. To determine the contribution of beak movements to sound modification, we studied the beak gape patterns in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). Subsyringeal air sac pressure and song were recorded together with changes in beak gape, which were monitored with a magneto-sensitive transducer. Beak gape was positively correlated with funda

Vomeronasal and/or olfactory mediation of ultrasonic calling and scent marking by female golden hamsters.

The role of the olfactory and vomeronasal systems in mediating odor-stimulated ultrasonic calling, flank marking, and vaginal marking by female hamsters was investigated by selective lesions of either system. Removal of the vomeronasal organ resulted in reduced frequencies of ultrasonic calling by estrous and nonestrous females in response to conspecific odors but it had no influence on either scent marking behavior during the same tests. When tested immediately after separation from a male, ultrasonic calling was not reduced by vomeronasal removal, indicating that such surgery does not cause
