Sodium 5-methoxysalicylate, previously shown to enhance the rectal absorption of several drugs, facilitates the absorption of insulin from the upper gastrointestinal tract, resulting in significantly elevated insulin levels and lowered glucose concentrations in the plasma of rats. Restricting the movement of insulin and adjuvant down the intestine by either ligation or use of a more viscous vehicle further increased the absorption of insulin.

Twelve patients with communicating hydrocephalus were studied with a servocontrolled lumbar infusion technique to measure net cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) absorptive capacity and resting pressure. Each patient showed a significant absorptive reserve; the rate of CSF absorption exceeded the rate of formation over a physiological range of pressure. Oral iron and zinc tolerance tests were performed in 12 patients between 8 and 21 years of age, with iron deficiency anemia and geophagia. Decreased iron and zinc absorption were detected respectively in patients against the elevated absorption curves in control subjects. Iron and zinc malabsorption may be an additional feature of the syndrome characterized by geophagia, iron deficiency anemia, hepatosplenomegaly, hypogonadism and dwarfism observed in Turkey and Iran.

Highly purified preparations of Clostridium botulinum toxins were administered to chickens by various routes. Chickens were highly susceptible to type A toxin, but relatively resistant to toxins of other types. Type C toxin (12S) at a dose of 1 X 10(7) mouse ip LD50 failed to kill the chicken by the oral route. 10 patients with chronic renal disease on hemodialysis and 8 normals were studied by constant jejunal perfusion of calcium gluconate solutions, using polyethylene glycol as a nonabsorbable marker.
