OBJECTIVE: There are growing concerns in the European Union about farmer mental health. Research to date has mainly focused on the causes of … ifferences in institutional capacity of the four cases. It has limited reach and relies heavily on charitable funding. The Finnish and French systems provide broader and more stable provision because mental health a …

Portraits of loneliness: emerging themes among community-dwelling older adults.

With aging comes a multitude of possible losses, including loss of health, spouse, friends, or independence. These losses can place older adults at risk for isolation and loneliness. Loneliness is of significant concern in older adults, as it can negatively affect their quality of life. An interpretive phenomenological study was conducted to explore the meaning of loneliness in 12 older adults living in the community. Selected excerpts from the participants reveal several themes, as well as the importance of maintaining meaningful connections and relationships with others to alleviate feelings

Ways of coping in survivors of suicide.

The purpose of this pilot study was to describe ways in which survivors cope after a death by suicide of a family member or significant other and to explore the psychometric properties of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WoCQ). An examination of inter-item correlations indicated that subscales were unidimensional and reliabilities ranged from α = .57 to α = .82. Construct validity was established by correlating the WoCQ subscales with other established instruments. Females used Seeking Social Support and Positive Reappraisal significantly more than males (p < .05). Interventions to enhance po

Re-examining the long-term effects of experiencing parental death in childhood on adult psychopathology.

This study examined whether the experience of the death of a parent in childhood increases risk for adult psychopathology. Participants consisted of 3481 men and women gathered through the Baltimore Epidemiologic Catchment Area study in 1981 and followed through 1994-1995. The Diagnostic Interview Survey was administered by trained interviewers and was used to assess DSM-III disorders including major depression, panic, and anxiety disorders. Maternal death was not a predictor of adult psychopathology. The death of the father during childhood more than doubled the risk for major depressive diso

Symptomatology and psychopathology of mental health problems after disaster.

A variety of reactions are observed after a major trauma. In the majority of cases these resolve without any long-term consequences. In a significant proportion of individuals, however, recovery may be impaired, leading to long-term pathological disturbances. The most common of these is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is characterized by symptoms of reexperiencing the trauma, avoidance and numbing, and hyperarousal. A range of other disorders may also be seen after trauma, and there is considerable overlap between PTSD symptoms and several other psychiatric conditions. Risk factor

Differential diagnosis of childhood depression: using comorbidity and symptom overlap to generate multiple hypotheses.

Childhood depression is often found to share symptoms and coexist with several other childhood disorders and physiological conditions, leading to diagnostic errors and possibly inappropriate treatment. Literature relevant to the differential diagnosis of childhood depression is reviewed with particular attention given to the similarities and differences between depression and coexisting conditions such as anxiety disorders, conduct disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The characteristics of childhood depression are compared and contrasted with other possible coexisting diso

Childhood parental loss and cortisol levels in adult men.

Although data from animal studies show that early rearing experiences can have lasting effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, little is known about the relationship between childhood parental loss and adult cortisol levels in humans. In the current study, 57 healthy adult men completed a telephone interview concerning parental loss or separations before age 17. Salivary cortisol measures, taken 10 times a day for 5 days in the daily environment, were available from an earlier study. Nine subjects had experienced the death of a parent during childhood. Compared to levels in 3

Prevalence of depression and its treatment in an elderly population: the Cache County study.

BACKGROUND: Previous estimates of the prevalence of geriatric depression have varied. There are few large population-based studies; most of these focused on individuals younger than 80 years. No US studies have been published since the advent of the newer antidepressant agents. METHODS: In 1995 through 1996, as part of a large population study, we examined the current and lifetime prevalence of depressive disorders in 4,559 nondemented individuals aged 65 to 100 years. This sample represented 90% of the elderly population of Cache County, Utah. Using a modified version of the Diagnostic Inter

Relevant Condition at Death and customized birthweight centiles for stillbirth classification: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Stillbirths (SBs) remain the largest contributor to perinatal mortality, with nearly two-thirds of SBs consistently reported as unexplained. Studies have consistently shown fetal growth restriction (FGR) as a major contributor to SB. Early detection and appropriate management are vital to reducing SB, and the Relevant Condition at Death (ReCoDe) classification utilizes customized birthweight (CBW) centiles to diagnose FGR, decreasing the proportion of SB remaining unclassified. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study to classify SBs using the ReCoDe classification system. A
