Alcohol and Cannabis Use in the Context of Violence Experiences and Traditional Masculinity Attitudes Among Black Emerging Adult Men in Baltimore, Maryland.

Cannabis and alcohol use can be coping mechanisms for young Black men who have experienced violence. Less is known about cannabis and alcoho … and two or more cumulative violence experiences (70%), with a smaller percentage reporting frequent binge drinking (15%). Two themes described cannabis and alcohol use motivations: (a) Coping and (b) Social connectedness. "That's my escape for real" described a participant coping with experiences of trauma and violence. "It's a social thing" described participan …

Oregon Adults' Cannabis and Alcohol Use: Associations With Local Cannabis Retail Access, 2014-2022.

INTRODUCTION: A state representative sample was used to test the associations between local access to cannabis retailers and Oregon adults' cannabis and alcohol use outcomes as well as differential associations by age group. METHODS: Respondents' 30-day cannabis use (1+ days) and frequent use (10+ days) and 30-day binge drinking and heavy alcohol use were drawn from Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System surveys (2014-2022) and matched with a geospatial density measure of local cannabis retail access by respondent ZIP code. Models adjusted for time trends. Analyses were run in 2023-2024. …

Feasibility results from a randomized trial of a text message-delivered sexual violence harm reduction intervention among college students.

OBJECTIVES: We conducted a Stage 1B pilot randomized controlled trial in which a text message was used to reduce the degree of harm caused by sexual violence. The complete study protocol was assessed to inform future intervention delivery and research processes for a full-scale trial. METHODS: This feasibility randomized trial compared two text message-delivered intervention conditions: alcohol reduction content and sexual violence harm reduction content. We recruited college students aged 18-24 years who reported recent (past 30 days) binge drinking to participate in the 12-week intervention…

Effects of omega-3 fatty acids on CB1 cannabinoid receptor localization in the hippocampal CA1 region following alcohol withdrawal in adolescent male mice.

Adolescent binge drinking has detrimental effects on brain function, leading to long-lasting impairments in synaptic plasticity, cognition, and behavior. These effects are mediated, in part, by disruption of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and its cannabinoid type-1 (CB1) receptor. Alcohol consumption also depletes omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for maintaining cell membrane integrity and supporting brain function. This depletion impairs synaptic plasticity by disrupting endocannabinoid signaling and reducing CB1 receptor expression and function. Conversely, enhancement of the ECS c…

Substance Use in Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivors: An Integrative Review.

The adolescent and young adult (AYA) ages are a time when individuals are susceptible to risky behaviors, including binge drinking, tobacco, marijuana, and illicit drug use. AYAs are at an increased risk for developing chronic health problems compared with their healthy peers, and substance use can pose additional risks. The purpose of this review is to compare substance use in AYAs with their healthy peers and identify contributing factors. A literature search was conducted of PubMed, Scopus, and OVID databases using keywords substance*, adolescent*, adolescence*, teens*, teenager*, young adu…

Prenatal ethanol exposure causes anxiety-like phenotype and alters synaptic nitric oxide and endocannabinoid signaling in dorsal raphe nucleus of adult male rats.

Mood disorders, including anxiety and depression caused by prenatal ethanol exposure (PE) are prevalent conditions in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Prenatal ethanol exposure is associated with persistent dysfunctions of several neurotransmitter systems, including the serotonin (5-HT) system, which plays a major role in mood regulation and stress homeostasis. While PE is known to disrupt the development of the 5-HT system, the cellular mechanisms by which it alters the function of dorsal raphe nucleus (DRn) 5-HT neurons and their synaptic inputs remain unknown. Here, we used a secon
