The technetium-99m DTPA partition test in the diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis.

Although the blood/cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) bromide concentration ratio is sensitive and specific in the diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis (TBM), bromide-82 is not always available since it is not generally used in nuclear medicine. The use of technetium-99m diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid (DTPA) for a partition test was compared with that of 82Br in 22 cases. Seven patients were diagnosed as having TBM, 9 patients had viral meningitis and 5 patients had septic meningitis. One normal control subject was also studied. Although the mechanism of transfer of substances across the blood-bra

Degeneration and regeneration of the olfactory epithelium following inhalation exposure to methyl bromide: pathology, cell kinetics, and olfactory function.

The effects of acute inhalation exposure to methyl bromide (MeBr) on the olfactory epithelium of male F-344 rats was investigated by morphologic examination of animals killed at varying timepoints during and following exposure to 200 ppm MeBr 6 hr/day for 5 days. Cell replication rate and histopathology were used to assess the kinetics of repair. In addition, olfactory function, using the buried food pellet test, was assessed and the result compared with morphological recovery. Extensive destruction of the olfactory epithelium was evident in animals killed directly after a single 6-hr exposure

Mapping of Escherichia coli ribosomal components involved in peptidyl transferase activity.

The method of affinity labeling has been used to identify protein components of 50S ribosomal subunits involved in peptidyl transferase activity. E. coli 50S ribosomal subunits were mapped by reaction with the N-bromoacetyl analog of chloramphenicol, an antibiotic known to interact specifically with the active center of the enzyme. The synthetic analog competes with chloramphenicol in binding to 50S ribosomal subunits and inhibits peptidyl transferase activity. It attaches covalently to the ribosome under appropriate conditions and causes an irreversible loss in peptidyl transferase activity.

Effects of salso-bromo-iodine thermal water in children suffering from otitis media with effusion: a randomized controlled pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is an ear disorder defined by the presence of fluid in the middle ear without signs or symptoms of acute infection. The aim of this randomised and controlled pilot study was to evaluate whether the treatment with a watery salsobromo- iodine solution, administered by nasal douche, could induce ear healing better than isotonic saline in children with OME. METHODS: The study was randomized, single-blind, and controlled. Study group (40 children) was treated with salso-bromo-iodine thermal water solution and Control group (40 children) was treated with

Topical immunization onto mouse skin using a microemulsion incorporated with an anthrax protective antigen protein-encoding plasmid.

The current anthrax vaccine in the U.S., the anthrax vaccine adsorbed, has several serious drawbacks, most notably the very lengthy and complicated dosing schedule. Thus, there is a critical need to develop an alternative anthrax vaccine with a simplified immunization schedule. To address this need, we evaluated the feasibility of topically priming or boosting onto the skin using an anthrax protective antigen (PA) protein-encoding DNA vaccine. To this end, we have shown that topical immunization of mice onto their skin with a perflubron-based microemulsion incorporated with a PA63-encoding pla

Resveratrol Pretreatment and Decabromodiphenyl Ethane-Associated Hepatorenal Changes in a High-Dose Female Mouse Model: Redox Changes and Ferroptosis-Associated Markers.

Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) is an emerging brominated flame retardant that has been detected in animal-derived foods. This exploratory experiment used a high-dose toxicological challenge rather than a dietary-exposure scenario. This study evaluated whether resveratrol (Res) pretreatment was associated with differences in selected liver- and kidney-related endpoints in a high-dose DBDPE mouse model. A total of 54 five-week-old specific pathogen-free female Kunming mice were acclimated for 7 days and allocated into six groups (n = 9) by weight-ranked allocation. Res (25, 50, or 100 mg/kg bo

An exploration of the breast milk nutriome, exposome and microbiome and their links to early growth in preterm infants.

Breastfeeding promotes improved growth and development in preterm infants, yet the mechanisms underlying these benefits remain unclear. This study explored the interplay of breast-milk nutritional, microbiological, and environmental chemical exposure on early preterm infant growth. In the prospective LACTACOL-cohort, growth was assessed in 137 exclusively breastfed preterm infants (including 40 twins) using Z-scores of discharge weight and fat-free mass (FFM, by air-displacement plethysmography). Breast-milk samples were analyzed for their nutriome (targeted and untargeted metabolomic and lipi

Physicochemical Characterization and Metabolites Identification of the Synthetic Cannabinoid MDMB-5'Br-PINACA Using In Silico and In Vitro Approaches.

MDMB-5'Br-PINACA is a recently identified brominated synthetic cannabinoid that was detected in herbal materials seized in Brazil in 2025, raising concerns regarding further potential intoxication cases. In this sense, the evaluation of physicochemical properties and metabolic fate may improve its analytical detectability. Therefore, an integrated in silico and in vitro approach was employed to investigate the physicochemical properties and phase I metabolism of MDMB-5'Br-PINACA. Physicochemical parameters and predicted metabolic pathways were first evaluated using BioTransformer 3.0 and XenoS

Incorporating bioaccessibility into human health risk assessment of halogenated flame retardants: from external exposure to bioaccessible dose.

Halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) are persistent contaminants of global concern. Current assessments of the human health risks of HFRs largely rely on total environmental concentrations, which reflect external exposure rather than the fraction available for uptake. Addressing this limitation requires bioaccessibility, defined as the fraction released from an ingested matrix and made available for absorption, distinct from bioavailability and internal dose. Despite its relevance, bioaccessibility has not been systematically integrated into HFR risk assessment. Based on evidence from 176 studi

Decreases in contaminant loads and risk of adverse effects in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) from Inner Danish waters over three decades.

We present temporal trends in juvenile harbour porpoises from Danish Waters collected during 1980-2019, and investigate effect concentrations for both juveniles and adults for a range of organochlorines (OCs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), organotins and total mercury (THg). We found declining concentrations for ∑PCBs, ∑DDTs, ∑HCHs, HCB, Trans-nonachlor, ∑PBDEs, TBT and ∑BTs over the three periods 1987-1990, 1996-1999 and 2010-2019. Concentrations above effect thresholds were detected for ∑PCBs, ∑DDTs and THg. All adult males were above PCB ef

Application of nail analysis in human biomonitoring of toxic pollutants: A review.

Nail tissue, as a keratinized biomatrix, serves as a valuable indicator of chronic human exposure to toxic pollutants. The analysis of nail samples has emerged as a prominent method for human exposure assessment, primarily due to its non-invasive sampling procedure and ease of sample storage and transportation. This review examines recent applications of nail analysis in human biomonitoring of toxic organic compounds and heavy metals, along with the various pretreatment methods that have been developed. Studies of human nail samples have revealed distinctive patterns in toxic pollutant accumul

Novel potent and selective dual acetylcholinesterase inhibitors: N-substituted theobromine and theophylline derivatives.

Methylxanthines and their derivatives are of great interest due to their diverse biological activities. In this work, a new series of twenty-eight semisynthetic theobromine and theophylline derived compounds were designed and synthesized by applying a simple and efficient strategy. First, the corresponding methylxanthine was reacted with a dibromoalkane (n = 3, 5-8) and subsequently, the brominated intermediate was reacted with an amine, including pyrrolidine, piperidine, diethylamine, methylpiperazine, 1-(2-aminoethyl)pyrrolidine, 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperidine, 2-(1-methylpyrrolidin-2-yl)ethanam…

The emergence of bromazolam in Jefferson County, AL: a case series.

Postmortem toxicology is an ever-changing landscape presenting challenges for toxicologists and medical examiners. Trends can vary for certain benzodiazepines. While diazepam use tends to remain constant, alprazolam and clonazepam ebb and flow depending on prescription trends and street popularity. Novel benzodiazepines like etizolam vary in casework depending on legal restrictions and black market availability. In May 2022, the first case of the designer benzodiazepine, bromazolam, was detected in Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiner's Office casework. Between then and December 2023, an

Extended exposure to tetrabromobisphenol A-bis(2,3-dibromopropyl ether) leads to subfertility in male mice at the late reproductive age.

Tetrabromobisphenol A-bis(2,3-dibromopropyl ether) (TBBPA-BDBPE), a commonly used brominated flame retardant as a decabromodiphenyl ether substitute, has been detected in various environmental compartments, but its health hazards remain largely unknown. Our recent study showed that low-dose exposure of male mice to TBBPA-BDBPE from postnatal day (PND) 0 to 56 caused remarkable damage to the microtubule skeleton in Sertoli cells and the blood-testis barrier (BTB) but exerted little effect on conventional reproductive endpoints in adulthood. To investigate whether TBBPA-BDBPE may cause severe re
