Coevolution of marine phytoplankton and Alteromonas bacteria in response to pCO2 and coculture.

As a result of human activity, Earth's atmosphere and climate are changing at an unprecedented pace. Models based on short-term experiments predict major changes will occur in marine phytoplankton communities in the future ocean, but rarely consider how evolution or interactions with other microbes may influence these changes. Here, we experimentally evolved several phytoplankton in coculture with a heterotrophic bacterium, Alteromonas sp. EZ55, under either present-day or predicted future pCO2 conditions. Growth rates of phytoplankton generally increased over time under both conditions, but o

Enhanced electromechanical performance of Si-modified lead-free BiFeO3-BaTiO3 ceramics for high-temperature piezoelectric applications.

Environmental pollution generated by industrial wastes are deteriorating land, water, and marine life, which raises major concerns about climate change. Since environmentally friendly piezoelectric materials can generate clean energy by applying mechanical forces, they are seen as viable agents for industrial applications. In recent research work, the Si-modified 0.70Bi1.03FeO3-0.30BaTiO3 (BF30BT) environmentally friendly piezoceramics were synthesized using a solid-state method followed by a thermal quenching process. The crystalline structure, microstructure, and electromechanical characteri

Interactive effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 and UV-B radiation: A multi-level study on marine diatom Skeletonema pseudocostatum.

Climate change as a result of increases in greenhouse gas emissions, such as CO2, is causing significant alteration in global environmental conditions, including ocean acidification (OA). Although the depletion of the ozone layer has reduced, the penetration of ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation into the oceans still remains an environmental factor that may potentially enhance the effects of OA on biota. Improved understanding of the complex interactions between multiple stressors, such as UV-B radiation and increased CO2 levels, is thus important for safeguarding ecosystems and developing effectiv

Chemical fixation of CO2 conducted by Mg-based materials catalysts to produce cyclic carbonates: A comprehensive review.

We are witnessing a surge in CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, leading to serious environmental issues for our planet. If we do not take action, it will harm humanity and the biosphere. Increased levels of CO2 in the atmosphere contribute to global warming, which results in climate upheavals that disrupt ecosystems, alter plant reproduction conditions, and cause numerous related problems. Consequently, the current CO2 levels in the atmosphere must be significantly lowered as soon as possible. CO2 is a plentiful C1 feedstock, and its chemical utilization has inspired chemists in recent years.

Dimensionally Stable Nanofibrous Nonwoven as a Flexible Dynamic Emissivity Switching Temperature-Regulating Material.

Smart textiles that passively regulate thermal comfort provide a sustainable alternative to energy-intensive climate control. A promising strategy involves modulating radiative heat transfer by dynamically adjusting surface emissivity, thereby facilitating reversible switching between heat-retentive and heat-dissipative states. Existing systems enable emissivity switching but often need external energy or lack dimensional stability when deformed, which limits wearable applications. Here, a fully passive, autonomously adaptive dynamic emissivity switch textile (DEST) based on a thermo- and humi

Liquor fermentation industry reshapes soil microbiomes and drives CO2 emissions via microbial dispersal.

The rapid expansion of industrial fermentation has raised concerns about its environmental impacts, particularly regarding microbial dispersal from production facilities into adjacent terrestrial ecosystems; however, the ecological and functional consequences of microbial introductions originating from fermentation facilities remain poorly elucidated. We studied eight Chinese liquor fermentation facilities spanning 26°-47°N and 83°-124°E, covering the major geographical range of the industry. Using large-scale soil metagenomics, in situ CO2 flux measurements, and microcosm experiments, we demo

Bioinspired Iontronic Gas Sensor for Selective CO2 Sensing via Reversible Lysine Carbamylation.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is ubiquitous in both natural and indoor atmospheres, playing a pivotal role in global climate regulation, air quality, and biological processes. However, their chemical inertness poses inherent challenges for developing compact, high-sensitivity detection platforms. In living organisms, CO2 often modulates protein function through reversible carbamylation of lysine residues, illustrating a finely tuned molecular recognition mechanism. Inspired by this principle, we developed a bioinspired iontronic sensor by embedding lysine moieties into a cross-linked poly(ethylene glyc

Sugar sensors in plants: Orchestrators of growth, stress tolerance, and hormonal crosstalk.

Sugars, vital metabolites for cellular health, play a central role in regulating diverse intracellular pathways that control plant growth and development. They also enhance stress responses, enabling plants to endure adverse conditions. A few intracellular molecules involved in sensing the intracellular sugar content and concomitantly facilitating appropriate response (growth or survivability) are known as sugar sensors. Among the numerous sugar sensors identified in plants, this review focuses on four extensively studied sugar sensors, namely hexokinase (HXK), Sucrose non-fermenting 1-related

Vertical structures and microphysical characteristics of summer precipitation in North China detected by GPM-DPR.

The vertical structure and microphysical characteristics of stratiform precipitation (SP) and convective precipitation (CP) in North China are revealed based on the GPM-DPR product during boreal summer of 2014-2021 in this study. Additionally, the differences in precipitation features between the mountain and the plain are investigated. Under the combined influence of climatic factors and local topography, the precipitation amount is larger in the plain than in the mountain while precipitation frequency exhibits an opposite pattern. The proportions of the two precipitation types are similar in

Effects of elevated CO2 on the critical oxygen tension (Pcrit) and aerobic metabolism of two oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) hypoxia tolerant squat lobster species.

Marine invertebrates living in oxygen minimum zones (OMZ), where low pO2 and high pCO2 conditions co-occur, display physiological mechanisms allowing them to deal with these coupled stressors. We measured aerobic metabolic rate (MRa) and the critical oxygen tension (Pcrit), and calculated the oxygen supply capacity (α) of both the red (Grimothea monodon) and yellow (Grimothea johni) squat lobsters, under two pCO2 scenarios (~414 and 1400 μatm). We also measured haemolymph pH, haemocyanin oxygen binding affinity (p50), and haemolymph lactate content in both species under normoxia, low pCO2 hypo

Metagenomic insights into inhibition of soil microbial carbon metabolism by phosphorus limitation during vegetation succession.

There is growing awareness of the need for regenerative practices in the fight against biodiversity loss and climate change. Yet, we lack a mechanistic understanding of how microbial community composition and functioning are likely to change alongside transition from high-density tillage to large-scale vegetation restoration. Here, we investigated the functional dynamics of microbial communities following a complete vegetation successional chronosequence in a subtropical zone, Southwestern China, using shotgun metagenomics approaches. The contents of total soil phosphorus (P), available P, lit

Rapid aqueous-phase dark reaction of phenols with nitrosonium ions: Novel mechanism for atmospheric nitrosation and nitration at low pH.

Dark aqueous-phase reactions involving the nitrosation and nitration of aromatic organic compounds play a significant role in the production of light-absorbing organic carbon in the atmosphere. This process constitutes a crucial aspect of tropospheric chemistry and has attracted growing research interest, particularly in understanding the mechanisms governing nighttime reactions between phenols and nitrogen oxides. In this study, we present new findings concerning the rapid dark reactions between phenols containing electron-donating groups and inorganic nitrite in acidic aqueous solutions with

Precipitation patterns strongly affect vertical migration and methylation of mercury in legacy contaminated sites.

Legacy-contaminated sites act as significant sources of mercury (Hg) to their surrounding surface and underground environments. Intensified extreme precipitation is posing great threats to the environment and human health by changing the fate of pollutants, yet little is known about its effect on the vertical migration and methylation of Hg in contaminated sites. Here, we applied a range of simulated extreme precipitation patterns (frequency and intensity) to column leaching assays with soils collected near a contaminated site. We observed that precipitation with high frequency but low intensi

Trichinella: Becoming a parasite.

Phylogenetic evidence indicates that free-living nematodes gave rise to parasitic nematodes where parasitism evolved independently at least 15 times. The high level of genetic and biological diversity among parasites dictates an equally high level of diversity in the transition to parasitism. We previously hypothesized that horizontal gene transfer (HGT) played an important role in the evolution of parasitism among early ancestors of Trichinella, mediated by an interplay of ecological and evolutionary pathways that contributed to persistence and diversification. We propose that host selection

The Southern Ocean mixed layer and its boundary fluxes: fine-scale observational progress and future research priorities.

Interactions between the upper ocean and air-ice-ocean fluxes in the Southern Ocean play a critical role in global climate by impacting the overturning circulation and oceanic heat and carbon uptake. Remote and challenging conditions have led to sparse observational coverage, while ongoing field programmes often fail to collect sufficient information in the right place or at the time-space scales required to constrain the variability occurring in the coupled ocean-atmosphere system. Only within the last 10 years have we been able to directly observe and assess the role of the fine-scale ocean

Evaluation of the Thermal Response of the Horns in Dairy Cattle.

Dairy cattle are typically disbudded or dehorned. Little is known, however, about the biological function and role of horns during thermoregulatory processes in cattle, and thus about the potential physiological consequences of horn removal. Anecdotal evidence suggests that dairy cow horns increase in temperature during rumination, and few studies on other bovid species indicate that horns aid thermoregulation. The objective of this study was, therefore, to elucidate a possible thermoregulatory function of the horns in dairy cattle. Using non-invasive infrared thermography, we measured the sup

Editorial: Mucus and the mucociliary interface: continuity and clearance.

Vitamin D deficiency affects a large part of the population of elderly people, especially women, who live in moderate climate countries due to a reduced amount of vitamin D in the diet (small sea fish consumption) and reduced content of 7-dehydrocholesterol, which causes decreased skin synthesis. The lowest seasonal concentration of 25(OH)D3 is usually observed during winter and spring. Sun exposure influences 25(OH)D3 concentration more strongly in men than in women. Sociodemographic factors that increase the risk of vitamin D deficiency in the elderly include poor environmental conditions, l
