Functional parathyroid cyst in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Functional parathyroid cysts are a rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism and are often mistaken for thyroid cysts. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is also a very rare cause of hypercalcemia. We report the case of a 62-year-old woman, who was diagnosed with SLE 30 years ago, presenting with clinical and biochemical features of primary hyperparathyroidism. Laboratory investigation revealed increased serum calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels; neck ultrasonography (USG) revealed 40×34×26 mm cystic mass in the left lobe of thyroid gland. PTH level in the cysts was >2500

Treatment of benign hepatic cysts by instillation of tetracycline hydrochloride.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Despite the high frequency of benign hepatic cysts, they rarely cause symptoms. Large cysts, however, may produce clinical … . No major complications occurred. Cytology, alpha fetoprotein, CA19.9, CEA and microbiology of the cyst fluid confirmed the initial ultrasonographic diagnosis of simple biliary cysts. Clinical complaints improved in 2 cases, and 5 patients became asymptomatic. Ultrasonography evaluation 3 months after the procedure was more reliable in predicting successful …

Feline Cyst-like Lymphocytic Cholangiohepatitis in a Cat: First Case Report.

A 5-year-old female neutered domestic short-haired cat presented with abdominal enlargement. An abdominal ultrasound revealed that large multiple hepatic cysts with irregular walls, hypoechoic fluid, and internal septations occupied most of the liver parenchyma. Serum liver enzymes, bilirubin, and bile acids concentrations were within normal limits. A fecal examination using simple floatation and formalin-ether sedimentation techniques was negative for liver fluke (Platynosomum fastosum), intestinal protozoa, and other helminth eggs. Praziquantel was prescribed for two distinct courses one mon

A rare case of intraneural ganglion cyst involving the tibial nerve.

Cystic lesions around the knee are a relatively common occurrence. Several types of cysts have been reported, including synovial, bursal, and ganglion. Ganglion cysts are not lined by synovial cells. Their location is highly variable, with occurrences described in the fat pads near the tibia or femur, muscles, nerves, and arteries. Intraneural ganglia are rare nonneoplastic cysts caused by the accumulation of thick mucinous fluid within the epineurium of peripheral nerves, encased in a dense fibrous capsule. These cysts can cause compression of the adjacent nerve fascicles, resulting in pain,

MRI signs for intraneural ganglion cysts: a roadmap revealing the pathoanatomic and pathophysiologic principles underlying the unifying articular theory.

Intraneural ganglion cysts (IGCs) are benign, mucinous lesions that are often found within the epineurium of peripheral nerves, causing mononeuropathy due to nerve compression. These cysts arise from synovial fluid tracking from an adjacent synovial joint along an articular nerve branch to the parent nerve, as proposed by the unifying articular theory. This theory has transformed the understanding of IGCs from their being considered as isolated nerve lesions but as joint-related pathologies. The emphasis of identifying the cyst's origin and its connection to the neighboring joint has shifted t

A rare case of Ganglion cyst in the thigh in a 44-year-old woman: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND SIGNIFICANCE: Ganglion cysts in the thigh area are uncommon, typically occurring in the wrist and ankle. These cysts are usually painless but may compress nearby structures, causing discomfort. Ultrasound is a valuable tool to differentiate ganglion cysts from hematomas and lipomas. It also helps identify the fluid-filled cyst walls. Treatment typically involves surgical removal, with complete resection being the goal. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a woman who experienced a gradual increase in size of a lump in her groin area. The lump was later diagnosed and comple

Large falciform ligament cyst in a child: A rare entity of peritoneal cysts and review of the literature.

Peritoneal cysts are not uncommon in children - mesenteric/omental cysts being the commoner entity. Peritoneal cysts in the falciform ligament are a very rare entity reported in the literature. We present a 5-year-old boy who presented with pain upper central abdomen and few episodes of non-bilious vomiting for 1 year. He was stable on examination, with abdominal examination revealing the fullness of the abdomen with palpable generalised cystic mass which was mobile transversely. Ultrasound and contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen revealed intra-peritoneal cystic lesion measuri

Posterior fossa epidermoid cysts presenting with unusual radiological appearances--two case reports.

Intracranial epidermoid cysts generally appear as hypodense on computed tomography (CT), hypointense on T(1)-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and hyperintense on diffusion-weighted MR imaging. We report two cases of posterior fossa epidermoid cysts with unusual radiological features. A 49-year-old male presented with facial dysesthesia and a 12-year-old male presented with diplopia and internuclear ophthalmoplegia. CT of both cases revealed hyperdense lesions. MR imaging showed the first case as hypointense in the posterior part and hyperintense in the anterior part of the tumor on di

Comparative sensitivity and specificity of the Casoni intradermal and the immunoelectrophoresis tests for the diagnosis of hydatid disease.

The Casoni intradermal (ID) test, using two antigens, was compared with the immunoelectrophoresis (IEP) test for diagnosis in 47 surgically confirmed cases of hydatid disease and 73 non-hydatid persons. An antigen prepared from boiled hydatid cyst fluid (HF) was markedly more sensitive in the ID test than another prepared from whole HF but both produced false-positive reactions in three persons with other disease conditions. The IEP test yielded no false positives and its sensitivity was similar to the ID test using the more sensitive boiled HF antigen. Some patients were ID-positive and IEP-n…

MRI in the mild type of mucopolysaccharidosis II (Hunter's syndrome).

We report imaging findings in a 3-year-old boy with the typical mild type of Hunter's disease. MRI revealed multifocal large cyst- or spindle-like areas of increased and decreased signal in the white matter, including the corpus callosum on T1- and T2-weighted images. The white matter showed high signal on T2-weighted images, isointense with cerebrospinal fluid on all other pulse sequences. To our knowledge, these appearances have not been reported in this disorder. Deposition of mucopolysaccharide and/or glycolipid and increase in fluid content seem to be responsible.

Fine needle aspiration cytology of hepatic hydatid cyst: a case study.

Hydatid cysts (echinococcosis) are caused by an infestation with larval tapeworms of the genus Echinococcus. The disease is extensively distributed worldwide, and it has been rarely reported in Korea. We describe the cytologic features of a case of hepatic hydatid cyst in a 28-year-old male. Computed tomography revealed a cystic mass in the right lobe of the liver. A right hemihepatectomy was performed. The aspirated fluid from the hepatic cystic mass was clear. The smears showed protoscolices, hooklets, and a laminated membrane.

A spontaneous and severe case of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome after delivery.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is almost exclusively associated with ovulation induction with gonadotropins or, occasionally, clomiphene citrate. Severe ovarian hyperstimulation after delivery has never been reported previously. Herein we report a case of OHSS after delivery by Cesarean section. The left ovary was subjected to wedge section and three-quarters of the tissue was removed. A cyst on the right ovary was enucleated and fluid within the cysts was sucked away. The patient was treated by intravenous albumin infusion.

MR imaging of nasopalatine duct cysts.

We describe the magnetic resonance (MR) features of two cases of nasopalatine duct cyst (NPDC), including the first presentation of T1-weighted images (WI). The signal intensity of the cases of NPDC showed homogeneous high signal intensity on both on T1 and T2WI, although most cysts of maxillofacial regions demonstrate low to intermediate signal intensity on T1WI. NPDC may commonly be of high signal intensity on T1WI, which is consistent with keratin and viscous fluids.

Case report: the computed tomographic features of mediastinal bronchogenic cyst rupture into the bronchial tree.

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital anomalies which occur most commonly within the mediastinum. They may become complicated by fistula formation with the bronchial tree. We report a case of an adult male where such a complication occurred between the time of the patient's chest radiograph and his examination by computed tomography (CT). We believe that this is the first reported CT demonstration of an air-fluid level within a mediastinal bronchogenic cyst, in a typical site, presumed to be caused by rupture into the bronchial tree.

Osteochondral defects in the ankle: why painful?

Osteochondral defects of the ankle can either heal and remain asymptomatic or progress to deep ankle pain on weight bearing and formation of subchondral bone cysts. The development of a symptomatic OD depends on various factors, including the damage and insufficient repair of the subchondral bone plate. The ankle joint has a high congruency. During loading, compressed cartilage forces its water into the microfractured subchondral bone, leading to a localized high increased flow and pressure of fluid in the subchondral bone. This will result in local osteolysis and can explain the slow developm

beta-Glucuronidase levels in patients with fibrocystic breast disease.

Certain enzymes in tissues and body fluids may, through reversal of the detoxification process, influence the composition and availability of steroid hormones, toxins, and carcinogens. The ubiquitous enzyme beta-glucuronidase, which hydrolyzes glucuronide conjugates, thereby reversing one of the main detoxification and excretion pathways, was found to vary in concentration in different cysts over a 300-fold range. The distribution was a continuum, devoid of discrete sub-populations. Evidence obtained on selected cyst fluids of high and low beta-glucuronidase activities indicated that the level…

Antibiotic-refractory unilateral breast abscess with contralateral cystic lesion in a pubertal girl: a case report.

Pediatric breast abscesses require timely infection control while minimizing injury to the developing breast. We report an 11-year-old pubertal girl with persistent left breast pain, swelling, and erythema after 7 days of oral antibiotic therapy. Physical examination revealed a fluctuant left breast mass and a tender contralateral cystic lesion. Inflammatory markers were elevated. Ultrasonography demonstrated a heterogeneous left-sided collection with peripheral vascularity, consistent with abscess formation, whereas the right breast showed a well-circumscribed anechoic cyst without inflammato
