AIMS: Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) is characterized by lower abdominal pain and increased frequency and urgency of urine. Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) is a bioactive sphingolipid that plays role in calcium homeostasis in smooth muscle. The intracellular calcium mobilizing secondary messengers are also involved in smooth muscle contraction. The role of intracellular calcium storing depots in S1P-induced contraction was investigated in permeabilized detrusor smooth muscle having cystitis.
MAIN METHODS: IC/PBS was induced by cyclophosphamide injection. The detrusor sm

The most common cause of acute dysuria is infection, especially cystitis. Other infectious causes include urethritis, sexually transmitted infections, and vaginitis. Noninfectious inflammatory causes include a foreign body in the urinary tract and dermatologic conditions. Noninflammatory causes of dysuria include medication use, urethral anatomic abnormalities, local trauma, and interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome. An initial targeted history includes features of a local cause (e.g., vaginal or urethral irritation), risk factors for a complicated urinary tract infection (e.g., male sex

In this case series, four equines were diagnosed with cystitis, resulting in divergent clinical outcomes. Three animals achieved complete clinical resolution without recurrence, whereas one required euthanasia due to progressive clinical deterioration. All diagnoses were established through a dual-modality investigative protocol comprising cystoscopic evaluation and histopathological examination of bladder mucosal biopsies. The cohort exhibited considerable etiological heterogeneity. One case was classified as chronic idiopathic cystitis, while another was attributed to an opportunistic bacter

We report the successful administration of interleukin-11 (IL-11 or oprelvekin), a promoter of megakaryocyte maturation, to a 54-year-old male Jehovah's Witness with hepatic cirrhosis and hypersplenic thrombocytopenia requiring surgery for symptomatic interstitial cystitis. This observation suggests that oprelvekin might be crucial in the acute management of certain types of hypersplenic thrombocytopenias.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a chronic condition characterized by bladder pain and lower urinary tract symptoms, predominantly affecting women and significantly impairing quality of life. Particularly in the absence of reliable knowledge about etiology and appropriate treatment of IC/BPS, clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) emphasize self-management as a key element of care. This review was aimed at comparing recommendations from CPGs, focusing on interventions to facilitate the self-management of women with IC/BPS.
METHODS: A systematic

How should a conscientious physician advise patients with Interstitial Cystitis /Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS) when they want to know if taking Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium (PPS) will lead to loss of vision? Ever since the initial report from Pearce et al in 2018 suggesting that PPS usage can lead to the development of pigmented maculopathy (PM), my patients have been inundated with solicitations from attorneys looking to sign up clients for class action lawsuits.1 While there have been additional reports suggesting a relationship between PPS exposure and the development of PM, Ludwig et al fo

The role of surgery in the management of bladder pain syndrome is unclear; particularly the optimum surgical approach. Treatment refractory patients should be managed in a multi-disciplinary setting including psychological support. Further prospective studies using validated assessments and clear diagnostic criteria would be useful to guide patient selection.

CONTEXT: Eosinophilic cystitis (EC) is an inflammatory condition of the bladder that has been linked to food allergens, infectious agents, drugs, and other genitourinary conditions. Like interstitial cystitis, EC has a strong female predominance. It is characterized by an intense eosinophilic infiltrate in the acute phase and fibrosis in the chronic phase.
OBJECTIVES: To document and focus on specific features of EC in males and highlight the relationship between clinical and histopathologic findings.
DESIGN: The bladder biopsies of male patients were reviewed. Eight cases of EC were selecte

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is featured by apoptosis and chronic inflammation in bladder tissue. We aimed to evaluate the effect of echinacoside (ECH), which is known to modulate inflammation and apoptosis on IC using relevant models. We established a mouse model of cystitis using cyclophosphamide (CYP) and treated human urothelium cells (SV-HUC-1) with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) + ATP as in vitro model. The bladder function was tested by urodynamics. Apoptosis of bladder cells was assessed by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling assay. Expressions of apoptosis-associated

OBJECTIVE: To systematically summarise and meta-analyse all uncontrolled and controlled studies evaluating the role of intravesical instillation of hyaluronic acid (HA), with or without chondroitin sulphate (ChS), in the treatment of bladder pain syndrome (BPS), recurrent urinary tract infection (rUTI) and post-radiation cystitis (pRC).
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted, and a protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42025640480). Studies published between 1 January 1969 and 31 August 2024 were retrieved from multiple databases. Data were analysed using random-effects and common-eff

Bladder reconstruction may be required in a variety of pathological conditions, including bladder cancer, irradiation cystitis, interstitial cystitis, tuberculosis, and various congenital anomalies. Currently, bladder reconstruction is done with an autogenous bowel segment. Use of a total prosthetic bladder as an intracorporeal urinary reservoir has been an elusive goal for many decades. Many investigational and a few clinical trials have been performed in an attempt to develop a near-normal bladder prosthesis utilizing alloplastic materials. To date the ideal prosthetic bladder has not been d…

Intravesical dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has been used in the treatment of 213 patients with various inflammatory conditions involving the lower genitourinary tract, including intractable interstitial cystitis, radiation cystitis, chronic prostatitis, and chronic female trigonitis. Significant symptomatic relief has been achieved in the majority of patients so treated, and no systemic or local toxicity has been noted. Some patients failed to respond entirely, and others relapsed after DMSO treatment periods of several months, ultimately coming to augmentation cystoplasty or urinary diversion. Ho

The pain response to urinary tract infection is largely uncharacterized, but the symptomatic response to urinary tract infection contrasts with the lack of pain response among individuals with asymptomatic bacteriuria. Quantifying pelvic pain in a murine urinary tract infection model, uropathogenic Escerichia coli induces transient pelvic pain, whereas an asymptomatic bacteriuria E. coli isolate causes no pain, thus recapitulating the spectrum of clinical responses to intravesical E. coli. These differential pain responses are not correlated with bladder colonization or inflammation, but inste

INTRODUCTION: Patients with a history of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) and who responded poorly or unsatisfactorily with previous treatment were compared taking intravesical hyaluronic acid (HA) or hyaluronic acid-chondroitin sulphate (HA-CS).
METHODS: Patients were treated with intravesical instillation with 50 mL sterile sodium hyalurinic acid (Hyacyst, Syner-Med, Surrey, UK) (n = 32) and sodium hyaluronate 1.6% sodium chondroitin sulphate 2% (Ialuril, Aspire Pharma, UK) (n = 33). Intravesical instillations were performed weekly in first month, every 15 days in the se

AIM: It is established that intravesical sodium hyaluronate and chondroitin sulfate has high efficacy in patients with bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC). Currently, an oral form of chondroitin sulfate is also available. The aim of study was to compare the efficacy of intravesical hyaluronic acid monotherapy and long-term oral chondroitin sulfate in combination with intravesical therapy in patients with BPS/IC.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 59 patients with BPS/IC were randomized in two groups. In Group 1, 30 women (mean age 57.1 years) received viscoelastic solution of

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy is one of the treatment options for prostate cancer (PCa) but up to 25% of men report about severe nocturia (nocturnal voiding). The combination of hyaluronic acid (HA) and chondroitin sulfate (CS) resembles glycosaminoglycan (GAG) replenishment therapy. The aim of our study was to evaluate the impact of HA and CS on nocturia, in men with nocturia after PCa radiotherapy.
METHODS: Twenty-three consecutive patients with symptomatic cystitis after external radiotherapy for PCa were enrolled. Patients underwent bladder instillation therapy with HA and CS weekly for the fi
