Lichenoid photocontact dermatitis to musk ambrette.

A patient is described with a pigmentary dermatitis of the face with histological features of a lichenoid reaction, which proved to be a photocontact dermatitis to musk ambrette. Photopatch tests produced a pigmented dermatitis that reflected the clinical and histological features of a lichenoid reaction, which occurred 1 month after application.

Allergic and photoallergic dermatitis from diphenhydramine.

A 52-year-old man developed contact and photoallergic dermatitis caused by diphenhydramine hydrochloride as well as contact dermatitis from paraphenylenediamine. The diphenhydramine photoallergy was elicited by long-wave ultraviolet light. The action spectrum differs from that noted in a recent report in which wavelengths shorter than 320 nm were responsible for eliciting diphenhydramine photoallergy. To the best of my knowledge, this is the third case of diphenhydramine photosensitivity reported in the English literature. The combination of both contact and photosensitivity to diphenhydramine…

Emerging topical nonsteroidal therapies in pediatric dermatology: atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, alopecia areata, vitiligo, and seborrheic dermatitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the current literature for updates on pediatric nonsteroidal topical therapies (NSTT) for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis, alopecia areata (AA), vitiligo, and seborrheic dermatitis (SD). RECENT FINDINGS: The FDA approved difamilast and expanded the approved age ranges for roflumilast, tapinarof, and ruxolitinib to treat AD. Recent studies also show positive results with delgocitinib. In the field of psoriasis, current research shows promise for tapinarof and roflumilast in an expanded age range. Among new AA treatments, relevant literature suppo…

Phenotypic and Endotypic Determinants of Atopic Dermatitis Severity From the Atopic Dermatitis Research Network (ADRN) Registry.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition with a highly variable clinical phenotype. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify historical and clinical features and biomarkers associated with AD severity. METHODS: A US registry of extensively phenotyped AD participants (aged 0.73-80 years) were enrolled at 9 academic centers. Information on family and personal medical history, examination, skin swabs (culture), and serum biomarkers was collected to evaluate their association with AD severity. RESULTS: Participants with AD (N = 2862) whose disease was categoriz…

Airborne Allergic Contact Dermatitis: Management and Responsible Allergens on the American Contact Dermatitis Society Core Series.

Airborne allergic contact dermatitis occurs when allergen particles suspended in the air deposit on the skin. Many allergens can result in an airborne distribution if presented in an aerosolized form. This review summarizes the allergens in the American Contact Dermatitis Society Core Allergen Series that have been documented to cause airborne allergic contact dermatitis. In addition to responsible allergens, this article also reviews management and treatment options.

Serum galectin-9 levels in atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and allergic contact dermatitis: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Myopathy in its severe forms including rhabdomyolysis is a very rare adverse effect occurring during monotherapy with the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors ('statins') and is associated with pronounced signs of oxidation injury. This has been found at a local (muscle) as well as at a systemic level (blood). Several lines of evidence indicate that even mild forms of myopathy during statin treatment may be associated with in vivo oxidation injury. In contrast, statin therapy has been shown to be associated with a decrease in oxidation injury. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to inves

Topical ROR Inverse Agonists Suppress Inflammation in Mouse Models of Atopic Dermatitis and Acute Irritant Dermatitis.

The retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptors RORα and RORγ are critical for the functions of specific subsets of T cells and innate lymphoid cells, which are key drivers of inflammatory disease in barrier tissues. Here, we investigate the anti-inflammatory potential of SR1001, a synthetic RORα/γ inverse agonist, in mouse models of atopic dermatitis and acute irritant dermatitis. Topical treatment with SR1001 reduces epidermal and dermal features of MC903-induced atopic dermatitis-like disease and suppresses the production of type 2 cytokines and other inflammatory mediators in lesional …

Oral administration of β-carotene or lycopene prevents atopic dermatitis-like dermatitis in HR-1 mice.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing eczematous skin disease. Certain populations of patients are resistant to standard therapies with topical steroids and/or calcineurin inhibitors, and require systemic medication, such as immunosuppressants. Recently, several reports have shed light on the anti-allergic effects of carotenoids. Therefore, we investigated the effect of p.o. administration of β-carotene or lycopene on AD-like symptoms of HR-1 hairless mice fed with a low zinc/magnesium diet. Mice were divided into four groups: (i) fed with a standard diet (Co group); (ii) low zinc/magn…

Allergic contact dermatitis from transdermal estradiol and systemic contact dermatitis from oral estradiol. A case report.

BACKGROUND: About 20% of patients using transdermal estradiol complain of adverse local side effects. CASE: A 47-year-old, postmenopausal woman developed eczematous lesions at the sites of application of a estradiol therapeutic transdermal system and successively at the sites of application of a gel containing estradiol. Due to the topical intolerance, the therapy was switched to oral estrogen, which caused a systemic pruritic rash. Positive patch tests with estradiol led to the diagnosis of type IV allergic dermatitis due to transdermal estradiol and to a gel containing estradiol. Systemic c…

Photosensitive dermatitis caused by pyridoxine hydrochloride.

Few photosensitive reactions caused by pyridoxine hydrochloride have been reported. There have been no reports of detailed photosensitivity studies on patients who have developed photosensitivity from pharmacologic doses of pyridoxine. Two patients with pyridoxine photosensitivity are described. Photopatch tests were positive for pyridoxine hydrochloride. The minimal erythematous dose (MED) for UVA decreased after the intravenous injection of pyridoxine hydrochloride in both patients. Normal controls gave negative results in photopatch tests for pyridoxine hydrochloride and phototest for vitam
