Differences in teenage pregnancy rates among five developed countries: the roles of sexual activity and contraceptive use.

CONTEXT: Adolescent pregnancy, birth, abortion and sexually transmitted disease (STD) rates are much higher in the United States than in most other developed countries. METHODS: Government statistics or nationally representative survey data were supplemented with data collected by private organizations or for regional or local populations to conduct studies of adolescent births, abortions, sexual activity and contraceptive use in Canada, the United States, Sweden, France and Great Britain. RESULTS: Adolescent childbearing is more common in the United States (22% of women reported having had

Survival of neonates born below thirty-five weeks gestation in a developing country (Barbados, the West Indies).

A retrospective study of the survival of babies born below 35 weeks of gestation over a period of five years from 1987 to 1991 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital was analysed. The births of 433 were evaluated taking into consideration the birth weights, periods of gestation and mode of delivery. The fetal outcome in relation to these parameters were examined. Twin pregnancies were excluded. A poor outcome was noted in babies below 1000 g. Increasing survival rates were observed with increasing birth weight and increasing period of gestation. Babies below 30 weeks gestation had a poor survival rate. C

European country comparisons provide evidence of a link between colon cancer and adenocarcinoma development in the lung but not the oesophagus.

Relative incidence rates of lung cancers demonstrate marked international variation in values for the different histological sub-types. In order to determine whether adenocarcinomas (ACs) in this site might share risk factors with other ACs, for example, in the breast, prostate, oesophagus and colon, a comparison of data in the IARC/WHO Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (Volume VII) was made for selected registries in Europe. Significant correlations were found between lung AC incidences/100,000 population and prostate and colon cancers in males (P < 0.005 and P < 0.05, respectively) and for

Non-physician insertion of IUDs: clinical outcomes among TCu380A insertions in three developing-country clinics.

Insertion of IUDs by trained non-physicians is increasing. This secondary analysis of TCu380A IUD acceptors collected at clinics in Nigeria, Turkey and Mexico involved 367 women; 193 insertions were performed by physicians and 174 by non-physicians. Women having their IUD inserted by a non-physician were more likely to experience a pain-free insertion, but also likelier to have the IUD removed for bleeding and pain or to experience an expulsion than women who had their IUD inserted by a physician. Early discontinuation rates were similar between the two groups. Overall continuation rates were

Eradication of H. pylori in a developing country: comparison of lansoprazole versus omeprazole with norfloxacin, in a dual-therapy study.

OBJECTIVES: Lansoprazole, a newer benzimidazole, is more potent than omeprazole in its anti-Helicobacter pylori effect in vitro. The present study was aimed at assessing its efficacy in a developing country. METHODS: Fifty patients were randomized to receive either lansoprazole or omeprazole, with norfloxacin for 2 wk; the ulcer healing rates, H. pylori eradication rates, and recurrence rates were compared over a 6-month period. RESULTS: Both lansoprazole and omeprazole were equally effective in inducing healing of ulcer (96.1 vs 95.5%, p > 0.05) and eradicating H. pylori (76.9 vs 63.9%, p >

Relationship between leadership and psychological empowerment in nursing: a meta-analysis exploring the role of country development level.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, empowering nurses has gained importance in decision-making processes, particularly in fast-paced clinical environments. Ethical, transparent and supportive leadership styles have been found to positively influence the psychological empowerment dimensions of nurses, such as meaning, competence, autonomy and influence. However, existing evidence remains fragmented, and the magnitude of this relationship across different health system contexts has not been quantitatively synthesised. OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the association between leadershi

Development and validation of a dementia risk prediction model for low- and middle-income countries: the 10/66 study.

BACKGROUND: Most people with dementia live in LMICs, underscoring the need for LMIC-specific identification of high-risk individuals. This study aimed to develop and validate a simple dementia risk prediction model for these settings. METHODS: Data from seven 10/66 Study sites were analyzed. Over 100 candidate predictors were screened based on existing models and the 2024 Lancet Commission, including LMIC-specific variables (eg, food insecurity and household assets). Predictors were selected using LASSO and modelled with the Fine-Gray method to generate a risk score. Predictive accuracy was p

Laboratory Analysis of Fecal Lactobacillus Strains and pH in Tobacco Smokers: A Comparative Study From a Developing Country.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Tobacco smoking is a major cause of preventable mortality globally, disproportionately impacting developing countries. While its systemic health effects are well-known, the influence of tobacco on gut microbiota-especially beneficial Lactobacillus species-remains poorly explored in resource-limited settings. METHODS: This study examined fecal Lactobacillus composition and stool pH among 200 participants from western Iran, including cigarette smokers, hookah users, combined users, and non-smoking controls. Standard microbiological methods were employed: stool pH measuremen…

Developing global measurement guidance to strengthen adolescent well-being data generation and use at country level.

Adolescence is a critical life stage marked by rapid physical, cognitive, and social development with implications for well-being in adulthood and of subsequent generations. Although global attention to adolescent well-being has grown over the past decade, efforts to measure it remain fragmented, sector specific, and include a greater number of indicators of risks and negative outcomes compared to positive well-being. To address these challenges, the World Health Organization, in collaboration with the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health and other United Nations (UN) partners, d

Multivariate analysis of poverty and social exclusion across EU countries in the context of Sustainable Development Goal 1.

Poverty reduction remains one of the socio-economic concerns of the international agenda. This research aims to examine the multidimensional nature of poverty across EU Member States through a multivariate analysis of selected socio-economic indicators. Ten indicators were initially selected to capture the multidimensional nature of poverty and the broader socio-economic situation encompassing income poverty and deprivation within the sustainable development goal 1, housing conditions, economic performance and digital factors. Based on the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test and subsequent statistical ana

Developing and validating a neonatal screening tool for congenital anomalies to be used in low- and middle-income country settings.

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies are among the common health problems faced by children in low- and middle-income countries, contributing substantially to infant mortality rates. Due to limited access to newborn screening programmes in most of the resource-limited settings, many congenital anomalies go undiagnosed and untreated, leading to adverse outcomes. This study aimed to develop and validate a newborn screening tool for congenital anomalies for use in resource-limited settings. METHODS: A Delphi approach was used to assemble a group of experts and develop the screening tool. Tool valida

Mapping within-country disparities in Ischemic stroke burden and trends by human development index, age and sex.

BACKGROUND: Growing concern exists over stalled declines in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) incidence; understanding health determinants is key to addressing stroke burden. Therefore, we aimed to determine the burden of AIS and transient ischemic stroke attack (TIA) in 2021, and their trends from 2010 to 2021 at the national and subnational levels, disaggregated by age and sex, and examining the relationship with the regional Human Development Index (HDI). METHODS: A population-based study in Chile was conducted using three national registries. Age-standardized incidence (ASIR), hospitalization (

Traumatic brain injuries in people falling from trees in Ziguinchor: a pathology in a rural area of a developing country.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) in people falling from trees is a condition rarely reported in the literature and is often observed in rural areas of developing countries such as Senegal. Ziguinchor, a heavily forested and agricultural region, experiences seasonal fruit harvesting activities that expose populations to the risk of falling from trees. The aim of our study was to highlight the epidemiological, diagnostic, therapeutic, evolutionary, and prognostic aspects of this pathology in Ziguinchor over a period of 3 years and 8 months, with the goal of identifying preventive measure…
