Activity in the fusiform gyrus predicts conscious perception of Rubin's vase-face illusion.

We localized regions in the fusiform gyrus and superior temporal sulcus that were more active when subjects viewed photographs of real faces than when they viewed complex inanimate objects and other areas in the parahippocampal gyrus and the lateral occipital lobe that showed more activity during the presentation of nonface objects. Event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging was then used to monitor activity in these extrastriate visual areas while subjects viewed Rubin's vase-face stimulus and indicated switches in perception. Since the spontaneous shifts in interpretation were too r

Electrophysiological correlates of human intrasaccadic processing.

Visual discrimination performance is thought to be suppressed during saccades in order to contribute to space constancy. However, under certain experimental conditions, visual inhibition may not take place, suggesting a more complex underlying mechanism. We tested the discrimination ability of 20 healthy subjects during visually guided horizontal saccades and recorded simultaneously the evoked brain activity from 30 channels over occipital, parietal, and temporal areas. During the execution of saccadic eye movements, visual stimuli were presented for 30 ms. In order to prevent retinal afterima

The role of delta-opioid receptors in the discriminative stimulus properties of a low dose of methamphetamine.

The effects of selective mu-, delta- and kappa-opioid receptor agonists and antagonists on the discriminative stimulus properties of methamphetamine were examined in rats that had been trained to discriminate between methamphetamine (0.4 mg/kg) and saline. Methamphetamine produced a dose-related increase in methamphetamine-appropriate responses in all of the rats. In generalization tests, neither morphine (a mu-opioid receptor agonist: 0.3-10 mg/kg) nor 3,4-dichloro-N-[2-(1-pyrrolidinyl)cyclohexo]benzeneacetamide (U50,488H: a kappa-opioid receptor agonist: 1.0-8.0 mg/kg) generalized to the dis

Infants' responsiveness to the auditory and visual attributes of a sounding/moving stimulus.

Responses to unimodal and multimodal attributes of a compound auditory/visual stimulus were investigated in 4-, 6-, 8-, and 10-month-old infants. First, infants were habituated to a compound stimulus consisting of a visual stimulus that moved up and down on a video monitor and a sound that occurred each time the visual stimulus reversed direction at the bottom. Once each infant met a habituation criterion, a series of test trials was administered to assess responsiveness to the components of the compound stimulus. Response was defined as the total duration of visual fixation in each trial. In

Synthesis, phencyclidine-like pharmacology, and antiischemic potential of meta-substituted 1-(1-phenylcyclohexyl)-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridines.

A series of 1-[1-arylcyclohexyl]-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridines were prepared by the reaction between 1-(1-cyanocyclohexyl)-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (1) and an appropriately substituted Grignard reagent. The resulting compounds were tested for their phencyclidine binding site affinities. Selected compounds were then tested for their ability to produce ketamine appropriate responding in monkeys and/or to show neuroprotective effects in a baby rat hypoxia/ischemia model. While it was found that binding site affinity correlated well with discriminative stimulus effects, it was found to be a poor i

Outcome of pregnancy in the rat with mild hyperphenylalaninaemia and hypertyrosinaemia: implications for the management of "human maternal PKU".

In attempting to determine the effects of mildly elevated maternal phenylalanine (Phe) blood levels on the developing fetal rat brain, a dietary supplement of Phe was given, under taste cover of Aspartame. Phe and tyrosine (Tyr) levels were mildly elevated throughout pregnancy without evidence of malnutrition. Mild hyperphenylalaninaemia with concurrent hypertyrosinaemia induced in rats prior to conception resulted in microcephaly and lasting behavioural problems in the offspring, specifically hyperactivity and learning difficulties. Dams fed Tyr to produce Tyr levels equivalent to the Phe-fed

Phencyclidine-like behavioral effects of 2-methyl-3,3-diphenyl-3-propanolamine (2-MDP).

2-Methyl-3,3-diphenyl-3-propanolamine (2-MDP) produced effects in animals similar to those produced by the dissociative anesthetics such as phencyclidine (PCP). Specifically, it shared the discriminative stimulus properties of PCP in rats trained to discriminate PCP (1 mg/kg) from saline; at higher doses, it disrupted brightness discrimination and stimulated locomotor activities in rats trained to avoid shocks in an automated Y-maze; and it produced surgical anesthesia when injected IV to rhesus monkeys. These pharmacological activities were observed only with the levo-isomer of 2-MDP. The dex

Looking behavior in monkeys raised with mobile and stationary artificial mothers.

Rhesus monkeys raised with mechanically driven mobile artificial mothers for the first 10 months of life looked more at other animals and were more sensitive to stimulus differences than monkeys raised on stationary surrogates. Both groups looked less and were not as discriminating as wild-born monkeys. The results are consistent with other evidence suggesting that one of the long-range consequences of maternal mobility is to reduce emotional responsiveness to novel situations.

Recognition and reproduction of words by Down's syndrome and non-Down's syndrome retarded children.

Children with Down's syndrome were compared with other severely retarded children on tests of recognition and reproduction of real and nonsense words after 0-, 15-, and 30-seconds delay. The results indicated that Down's syndrome children performed better on the recognition task, but worse on the reproduction task after delay, as compared with the other retarded children. It was hypothesized that the articulatory deficit in the Down's syndrome group is part of a general motor disability due to a difficulty in preprogramming sequences of movements.

Mnemonic discrimination in treatment-seeking adults with and without PTSD.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by overgeneralized emotional reactivity following a trauma. Similarities between current, safe contexts and past, threatening events trigger recurrent, distressing responses and can contribute to a host of symptoms, including reexperiencing and hypervigilance. Mnemonic discrimination, a component process of episodic memory, could promote overgeneralization when impaired. Mnemonic discrimination reflects the integration of old and new experiences and one's ability to differentiate them despite their similarities. To date, little research has

Transfer of cognitive training across magnitude dimensions achieved with concurrent brain stimulation of the parietal lobe.

Improvement in performance following cognitive training is known to be further enhanced when coupled with brain stimulation. Here we ask whether training-induced changes can be maintained long term and, crucially, whether they can extend to other related but untrained skills. We trained overall 40 human participants on a simple and well established paradigm assessing the ability to discriminate numerosity--or the number of items in a set--which is thought to rely on an "approximate number sense" (ANS) associated with parietal lobes. We coupled training with parietal stimulation in the form of

Establishment of auditory discrimination and detection of tinnitus induced by salicylic acid and intense tone exposure in the rat.

Rats were trained in a two lever food reinforced operant procedure to discriminate a 8000 Hz pure tone stimulus from its absence. Responding on one lever was reinforced in the presence of the tone and responding on the other lever was reinforced when the tone was absent. Frequency generalization testing yielded an inverted U-shaped function, whereas sound pressure level generalization testing yielded a continuous decrease in responding on the tone associated lever with decreasing sound pressure levels. The administration of sodium salicylic acid (150-450 mg/kg) generated responding on the tone

Free recall and forgetting of emotionally arousing words in autism spectrum disorder.

Since the earliest descriptions of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) abnormalities in affective behaviours have been considered a prominent feature in their clinical manifestations. What remains unclear, however, is whether these altered emotional behaviours are a mere facet of abnormalities in socio-cognitive processes or whether they constitute a primary feature of the condition. A number of studies now indicate that emotional processing atypicalities in ASD extend to domains outside the broader context of social cognition leading us to suggest that the disorder may be charac

Differences in performance and learning proficiency on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test in schizophrenia: do they reflect distinct neurocognitive subtypes with distinct functional profiles?

The aim of this study was two-fold: 1) to determine whether a priori subtyping of patients with schizophrenia based on both overall performance on a measure of executive-function, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), and ability to learn the task with expanded instruction, could be confirmed with other, independent measures of executive-function and learning, and, if so, 2) to determine whether these groups have different neurocognitive profiles and show differences in functional capacity. Fifty-four outpatients with schizophrenia were divided by WCST performance into three groups: intact e

Detection and discrimination of first- and second-order motion in patients with unilateral brain damage.

The present investigation explored the extent to which extrastriate cortex is necessary for various aspects of motion processing and whether the processing of first-order (Fourier) and second-order (non-Fourier) motion involves the same extrastriate cortical regions. Orientation, direction, and speed discrimination thresholds were measured in 21 patients with unilateral damage to the lateral occipital, temporal, or posterior parietal cortex. Their results were compared with those of 14 age-matched control subjects. The stimuli were static random-dot noise patterns, the luminance of which (firs

Measuring Image-Based Sexual Abuse (IBSA): Psychometric Validation and Analysis of the IBSA Scale.

Image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) is a growing global issue with significant psychological impacts, yet few validated tools assess childhood experiences. This study provides information on a newly developed IBSA Scale designed to capture the accumulating burden of multiple distinct dimensions of IBSA. The study included 6226 U.S. participants aged 18-28, with an oversampling of IBSA experiences (prior to age of 18) and of sexual and gender minority individuals. Psychometric evaluation involved Exploratory Graph Analysis (EGA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were conducted to assess the sc

The clinical utility of the Maslach Burnout Inventory in a clinical population.

This replication study examines the use of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-GS), a self-report questionnaire on burnout, as a clinical diagnostic instrument for measuring clinical burnout. The MBI and Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), a semistructured interview based on classifications in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994), were administered to 419 outpatients at a Dutch multicenter institution specializing in the treatment of work-related psychological problems. MBI scores indicative of the

Sexual disorders in the context of Darwinian psychiatry.

The thesis of this article is that a Darwinian perspective can provide medical sexology with a new theoretical framework which is useful to clarify the relationship between the evolutionary bases of human sexuality and the sex-specific vulnerability to different sexual disorders. Evolutionary theory predicts that the relative parental investment of the sexes in their offspring is associated with different mating strategies in males and females. Individuals of the sex that invests more in offspring should be more discriminative in their sexual interactions because the costs of making a poor mat

Factors associated with the effects of a structured psychiatric intervention on breast cancer patients.

The authors developed a structured group intervention for Japanese breast cancer patients. This program is a series of five 90-minute sessions including psycho-education, problem-solving, psychological support, relaxation training, and guided imagery. The aim of this study was to investigate discriminating factors between the improving and non-improving group. From November 1996 through November 1998, 110 patients participated in this study. Out of 110 patients, 9 failed to complete the five sessions. Nine did not return the questionnaire 6 months later, due to death of 3 individuals and re-lo

Sensory discriminability of older consumers: Interaction between evaluation method, number of samples, and age-related characteristics.

Sensory evaluation conducted by older consumers requires careful methodological consideration due to age-related changes in sensory and cognitive functions, including reduced sensitivity to taste, as well as declines in cognitive processing, memory, and attention. This study investigated the effects of evaluation methods and the number of samples on the sensory discriminability and repeatability of older consumers, categorized into active seniors (AS; 50-64 years) and seniors (S; ≥65 years). Eighty participants (AS: n = 37, S: n = 43) evaluated bulgogi for liking and intensity using a 9-point
