Babesia Species of Domestic Cats: Molecular Characterization Has Opened Pandora's Box.

This is the first comprehensive review of the literature pertaining to Babesia species reported from domestic cats. Description of the four species (Babesia felis, Babesia cati, Babesia herpailuri, and Babesia pantherae) named based on morphology and/or host specificity is documented. Feline babesiosis is of major veterinary concern only in South Africa. Reports of the rare occurrence of feline babesiosis cases in Europe (France, Germany, Poland, and Spain) and Asia (Israel, India, and Pakistan) are documented. Molecular characterization has revealed that cats can harbor a variety of Babesia s

Domestic violence in families in the Netherlands during the coronavirus crisis: A mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: The consequences of the coronavirus crisis are considerable for everyone in the Netherlands. Although there were concerns about the many vulnerable families who were forced to stay at home because of the measures taken by the government to contain the coronavirus in the Netherlands, there has been no increase in the number of reports of domestic violence or child abuse. OBJECTIVE: To gain insight by a mixed method study on what has happened during the lockdown within families who were already known to social services. METHODS: A quantitative study was performed among 159 families

Prenatal aromatase inhibition alters postnatal immunity in domestic chickens (Gallus gallus).

In birds, exposure to exogenous testosterone during embryonic development can suppress measures of immune function; however, it is unclear whether these effects are due to direct or indirect action via aromatization. Estradiol (E2) is synthesized from testosterone by the enzyme aromatase, and this conversion is a necessary step in many signaling pathways that are ostensibly testosterone-dependent. Many lines of evidence in mammals indicate that E2 can affect immune function. We tested the hypothesis that some of the immunomodulatory effects observed in response to in ovo testosterone exposure

Domestic wastewater treatment in a coupled sequential batch reactor-electrochemical reactor process.

The effectiveness of a sequenced biological-physicochemical reactor system for treating sewage was studied. The biological degradation was conducted in a Sequential Batch Reactor, which had innovative features for simplifying the operation and maintenance of the reactor. The reactor was operated at 4, 6, 8, and 12 hr cycle. Up to 82% removal of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), 50% removal of Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC), 45% removal of Total Nitrogen (TN), and 45% removal of Total Phosphorus (TP) were achieved. The treated effluent was further polished in a continuous-flow bipolar-mode electroc

Membrane Bioreactor-Treated Domestic Wastewater for Sustainable Reuse in the Lake Victoria Region.

Lake Victoria is a shared water resource between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, which is the second largest freshwater lake in the world. It has long since suffered from the consequences of overexploitation of its resources, mainly fish stocks, and increasingly high pollution. The closure of 58% of the fish processing plants (FPPs) is attributed to the declining fish stocks due to overfishing and pollution in particular. The installation and operation of a pilot membrane bioreactor (MBR) in Kisumu, Kenya, adopts an integrated approach by providing an integral, sustainable, cost-effective, and ro

[Profiles and Risk of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Domestic Wells in the Maozhou River Basin].

Intensive use of antibiotics promotes the occurrence and development of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) enter water environments from human and animal sources. Groundwater serves as an important water supply, while the profiles and risk of ARGs in groundwater remain unknown. The abundance and profiles of ARGs in 11 domestic wells in the Maozhou River basin of Shenzhen City were analyzed by high-throughput qPCR. The results showed that a total of 141 ARGs and 8 mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were detected, of which the genes corresponding resistance to sulfonamides, mu

A nonsense variant in the KRT14 gene in a domestic shorthair cat with epidermolysis bullosa simplex.

Epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) is a hereditary blistering disease affecting the skin and mucous membranes. It has been reported in humans, cattle, buffaloes and dogs, but so far not in cats. In humans, EBS is most frequently caused by variants in the KRT5 or KRT14 genes. Here, we report a case of feline epidermolysis bullosa simplex and describe the causative genetic variant. An 11-month-old male domestic shorthair cat presented with a history of sloughed paw pads and ulcerations in the oral cavity and inner aspect of the pinnae, starting a few weeks after birth. Clinical and histopatholo

Coinfection of domestic felines by distinct Sporothrix brasiliensis in the Brazilian sporotrichosis hyperendemic area.

Microbial interactions may impact patient's diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. Sporotrichosis is a hyperendemic neglected zoonosis in Brazil, caused by Sporothrix brasiliensis. Four pairs of clinical isolates of Sporothrix were recovered from four diseased cats (CIM01-CIM04, two isolates per animal) raising the possibility of coinfection in a sporotrichosis hyperendemic area, Brazil. Each isolate of the pair had distinct pigmentation in mycological culture, and was designated as "Light" or "Dark", for low and high pigmentation, respectively. Dark isolates reacted strongly with monoclonal anti

First molecular characterization of Sarcocystis neurona causing meningoencephalitis in a domestic cat in Brazil.

Sarcocystis neurona is the main agent associated with equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM). Apart from horses, S. neurona has been occasionally described causing neurologic disease in several other terrestrial animals as well as mortality in marine mammals. Herein, we describe the clinical, pathological, and molecular findings of a fatal case of S. neurona-associated meningoencephalitis in a domestic cat. The causing agent was analyzed by multilocus genotyping, confirming the presence of S. neurona DNA in the tissue samples of the affected animal. Significant molecular differences were fou

The first detection of anti-West Nile virus antibody in domestic ruminants in Egypt.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne disease, usually present as a symptomatic disease but can cause various clinical signs ranged from mild fever to severe encephalitis and death in various animals and humans. In Egypt, the epidemiological data about WNV infection in different animal species particularly in domestic ruminants are scarce. The present study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of WNV in cattle, buffalo, camel, sheep, and goats at some Governorates northern Egypt. In total, 360 serum samples (100 cattle, 50 buffalo, 50 camels, 85 sheep, and 75 goats) were examined using

Ocular and Lacrimal Gland Lesions in Naturally Occurring Rabies of Domestic and Wild Mammals.

Investigations describing the ocular and lacrimal gland lesions associated with rabies are sparse. Here we characterize the pathological changes and distribution of rabies viral antigen in the eye, optic nerve, and lacrimal gland of 18 rabies cases from different mammalian species. Histology and immunohistochemistry for rabies virus, CD3, CD20, and Iba1 were performed on tissue sections of eye, optic nerve, and lacrimal gland. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for rabies was performed on all cases, including 7 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) and 11 frozen tissue samples of eye and lacri

Screening of ectoparasites from domesticated dogs for bacterial pathogens in Vientiane, Lao PDR.

Arthropod-borne diseases are widespread worldwide and are a complex interaction between animals, humans and ectoparasites. The understanding of the diversity and epidemiology of organisms transmitted by arthropod vectors, and the role of hosts and vectors in transmission of infections remain limited in Lao PDR. What knowledge does exist is primarily focused on more rural regions of the country. This study screened ectoparasites from domestic dogs in Vientiane city for the presence of bacterial pathogens of zoonotic importance. A total of 3,511 arthropod vectors were collected from 112 dogs. Computed tomographic grading of middle ear disease in domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculi).

Ear disease, involving the middle and external ear, is commonly reported in pet rabbits, with lop-eared breeds predisposed. CT is the most reliable imaging modality for identifying otitis media (OM) in rabbits. This study aimed to develop a CT-based grading scale to classify the severity of CT changes in rabbits with presumed OM. Three observers independently reviewed CT images of 36 rabbits with OM. For both OM and material within the external ear canal, a grade of I to IV was used, (I=mild, IV=severe disease) and the level of agreement between reviewers was statistically evaluated. The study

Pinopsin and photoreception in the pineal organ of the domestic turkey during post-hatching development.

The avian pineal organ is photosensitive because of the presence of photopigments, of which pinopsin seems to be one of the most important. This organ is subject to far-reaching changes during post-hatching development, but evidence regarding pinopsin presence and direct photoreception during this time is lacking. This study was carried out to demonstrate the following: 1) the structures showing immunoreactivity to pinopsin in the turkey pineal organ, 2) the changes of these structures during development, 3) the pinopsin localization in pinealocytes in monolayer cultures, and 4) the role of di
