Clinical Application of Auricular Cartilage Expansion Technique for Conchal-Type Microtia Repair in the Xizang Autonomous Region.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of auricular cartilage expansion for conchal-type microtia in the high-altitude setting of Xizang. METHODS: Fourteen children (10 mo-6 y) with unilateral conchal-type microtia underwent single-stage cartilage expansion between October 2024 and February 2025. Procedures included helical cartilage release, antitragal cartilage grafting, conchal expansion, and local flap resurfacing. Outcomes were assessed at 6 months. RESULTS: All reconstructions survived completely. Mean operative time was 92±12 minutes. Auricular height improved 7.8±1.3 mm and p

Complex adult laryngotracheal reconstruction with a prefabricated flap: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Laryngotracheal stenosis (LTS) can cause persistent or recurrent airway obstruction. Although there is extensive literature on surgical techniques to treat LTS at onset, there are few techniques described for complex adult LTS after failed prior airway surgery. We describe a procedure used successfully in 3 patients who required structural augmentation for complex LTS. METHODS: Patients were treated with staged reconstruction using a prefabricated composite graft consisting of auricular cartilage and a radial forearm free flap. RESULTS: All patients underwent successful reconstru

Perichondritis with or without external otitis and intradermal injection: a new therapeutic approach.

Auricular perichondritis and fiogosis of the external auditory canal are not uncommon pathology of the ear. These inflammatory processes are often accompanied by reactive locoregional lymphadenopathy. An inadequate or insufficient systemic therapy may lead to the persistence of otalgia and of signs of flogosis. The administration of local intradermaltherapy allows a strengthening of the pharmacological effect and a reduction in the quantity of drug used. It provides a rapid improvement in the locoregional signs of infection.Intradermal injection is performed on two pretragral points, two retro

[The evaluation of cartilage and perichondrium grafts for the reconstruction of the tympanic membrane].

Since the publication of Miodoński, Zollner and Wullstein different methods and grafting materials have been promoted in tympanoplastic surgery. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the anatomical and functional results of tympanoplastic surgery with the use of cartilage and perichondrium grafts. The studies included a selected group of 112 patients who were operated on because of perforation of tympanic membrane. The analysed group consisted of 112 patients when perichondrium and cartilage were used to reconstruct the tympanic membrane. In all cases before and after operation there wa

Tragal cartilage in tympanic membrane reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Management of chronic perforation and severe posterior and/or attic Retraction Pocket (RP) or atelectasis of the tympanic membrane continues to be one of the most difficult problems for otologists. AIM OF THE STUDY: To analyse the usefulness of the tympanic membrane reconstruction with tragal cartilage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 27 patients with chronic perforation or severe RP operated by the same surgeon, using tragal cartilage tympanoplasty. Seven supplementary procedures were required for recurrent cholesteatoma (second-look surgery). RESULTS: There has bee

Treatment of orbital floor blowout fractures with conchal auricular cartilage graft: a report on 14 cases.

PURPOSE: We sought to present follow-up on 14 cases in which conchal cartilage graft was used to span small orbital floor defects (up to 2 x 2 cm). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen patients with orbital floor blowout fractures were included in the study; in 8 cases, there was associated fracture of the inferior orbital rim. The decision to proceed surgically was based on the presence of at least one of the following conditions: diplopia, enophthalmos, herniation of orbital tissues through gaps in the orbital floor bone, and concomitant displacement of bone fragments of the inferior orbital rim

Unilateral accessory tragi in a cat.

An accessory tragus-a congenital malformation of part of the external ear-is an abnormal appendage developed from the first pharyngeal (or branchial) arch. In humans, an accessory tragus can be associated with other abnormalities as part of congenital malformative syndromes, most of which are transmitted in an autosomal dominant mode. Three cutaneous exophytic lesions were detected in the right preauricular region of a 2.5-y-old, castrated male European shorthair cat. Two of these lesions were submitted for histologic examination and were diagnosed as accessory tragi. They consisted of a verti

["Die grosse Barb" in the museum of the University of Marburg. An early documentation of acromegaly].

The university museum for cultural history in the castle of Marburg has a portrait "Die grosse Barb", which represents a women suffering from acromegaly. She shows the typical pathologic alterations: thickening of the skin folds, thickening of the lips and the eyelids, growth of bones and cartilages, lengthening of the nose, enlargement of the ears, protrusion of the zygoma, mandible and the chin. Acromegaly is a consequence of enhanced secretion of growth hormone, which occurs also as a symptom of several syndromes, such as multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1, McCune-Albright-syndrome, and NA

Innovative technique for large septal perforation repair and radiological evaluation.

traumatic, iatrogenic, infectious, degenerative, overuse of vasoconstrictors, abuse of cocaine and more recently chemotherapy agents. Perforations are also classified according to their size and type of cartilaginous or osteocartilaginous deficit, as well as location (front, middle and rear). Many surgical techniques have been proposed to repair the perforation, although the results are often unsatisfactory for perforations of small and medium size; in large perforations permanent obliteration of the defect cannot always be ensured. It is often necessary to use tissues from inside the nasal tu

Treatment of relapsing polychondritis with the TNF-alpha antagonist adalimumab.

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare immune-mediated disease which is associated with inflammation in cartilaginous tissue throughout the body. Especially, the cartilaginous structures of ear, respiratory tract, nose, and joints are affected. Around 30% of the cases are associated with other diseases especially systemic vasculitis. Onset of RP is most likely between the ages of 40-60 years. This case reports the often disguised and similar symptoms of RP to Wegner's granulomatosis and the challenge of diagnosis. The relative rarity of RP has not permitted clinical trials to determine the ef

Relapsing polychondritis--case series from South India.

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare recurring inflammatory disorder with variable clinical course. It has been described mainly in Caucasian population. Reports from other ethnic groups are few. We report seven cases of relapsing polychondritis in south Indian population. In between 1995 and 2008, seven patients fulfilling the McAdam-Damiani-Levine criteria for diagnosis of relapsing polychondritis were identified. Records pertaining to these patients were studied and clinical presentation, course, and treatment offered were analyzed retrospectively. The female-to-male ratio in our series

Advances in regenerative medicine for otolaryngology/head and neck surgery.

Head and neck structures govern the vital functions of breathing and swallowing. Additionally, these structures facilitate our sense of self through vocal communication, hearing, facial animation, and physical appearance. Loss of these functions can lead to loss of life or greatly affect quality of life. Regenerative medicine is a rapidly developing field that aims to repair or replace damaged cells, tissues, and organs. Although the field is largely in its nascence, regenerative medicine holds promise for improving on conventional treatments for head and neck disorders or providing therapies
