Ambient air pollution and obesity in school-aged children and adolescents: A multicenter study in China.

BACKGROUND: Environmental factors such as air pollution may contribute to the development of childhood obesity. However, current epidemiological evidence is limited and inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the associations between long-term air pollution exposure and obesity in a large population of Chinese children and adolescents. METHODS: A total of 44,718 children and adolescents (50.5% boys) aged 7 to 18 years were recruited from seven provinces/municipalities in China. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and the prevalence of general and central

Early origins of cardiac hypertrophy: does cardiomyocyte attrition programme for pathological 'catch-up' growth of the heart?

1. Epidemiological and experimental evidence suggests that adult development of cardiovascular disease is influenced by events of prenatal and early postnatal life. Cardiac hypertrophy is recognized as an important predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, but the developmental origins of this condition are not well understood. 2. In the heart, a switch from hyperplastic to hypertrophic cellular growth occurs during late prenatal or early postnatal life. Postnatal growth of the heart is almost entirely reliant on hypertrophy of individual cardiomyocytes, and damage to heart muscle i

The optical properties of the anterior segment of the eye: implications for cortical cataract.

Epidemiological studies have correlated cortical cataract with exposure to light and have suggested that this is due primarily to relatively short wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation (UV-B). In addition, some cellular and animal models also implicate UV-B. In order to evaluate the likely role of different wavelengths of light in the etiology of cortical cataracts, the optical characteristics of several animal models were ascertained and compared to the primate. This study shows that the mouse model absorbs UV-B almost exclusively whereas other animal models such as the rabbit and the guinea p

Improved air quality in reunified Germany and decreases in respiratory symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Previous research on air pollution effects has found associations with chronic adverse health effects even at the relatively low levels of ambient particulates currently measured in most urban areas. METHODS: We assessed the impact of declines of total suspended particulates and sulfur dioxide in eastern Germany after reunification on the prevalence of nonallergic respiratory disorders in children. In the 1990s, particle mass (total suspended particulates) and sulfur dioxide declined, whereas number concentrations of nucleation-mode particles (10-30 nm) increased. In three study a

Estimation of the proportion of genetic cases in late-onset diseases: an application to Alzheimer's disease.

In diseases with a complex etiology including a genetic component, an important issue is to determine the proportion of cases really having inherited the disease. This is not easy in late-onset diseases where censoring might obscure the transmission pattern of the disease and give an apparently non-genetic distribution of the cases. We present a model that allows the estimation of the proportion of genetic cases in late-onset diseases. This model takes censoring into account by explicit modelling of the time dependency of the onset of the disease. The model is illustrated with an example based

Molecular characterization of virulent Leptospira interrogans serogroup icterohaemorrhagiae isolated from Cavia aperea.

Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonotic infection caused by pathogenic Leptospira. Synanthropic rodents are recognized carriers of leptospires; however, the role of wild rodents in the epidemiology of the disease is still incipient. In this work, we describe Leptospira strain isolated from Cavia aperea (Brazilian guinea pig). The isolated strain was characterized by partial rpoB gene sequencing, variable-number tandem-repeats and histopathological analysis. The strain was identified as Leptospira interrogans, serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae and caused clinical signs of leptospirosis in the hamster

Neonatal sunburn and melanoma in mice.

Retrospective epidemiological data have indicated that cutaneous malignant melanoma may arise as a consequence of intense, intermittent exposure of the skin to ultraviolet radiation, particularly in children, rather than from the cumulative lifetime exposure that is associated with other forms of skin cancer. Here we use a genetically engineered mouse model to show that a single dose of burning ultraviolet radiation to neonates, but not adults, is necessary and sufficient to induce tumours with high penetrance which are reminiscent of human melanoma. Our results provide experimental support fo

Temporal dynamics and forecasting of laboratory-confirmed human nontyphoidal Salmonella cases in Malaysia, 2018-2024: implications for surveillance.

OBJECTIVES: Nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a major cause of foodborne illness in Malaysia. Time-series modeling can characterize temporal patterns, although structural disruptions, nonlinear dynamics, and regional variability may affect model performance. This study aimed to characterize NTS seasonality in Malaysia, assess temporal stability, and explore model-based approaches for surveillance. METHODS: Monthly laboratory-confirmed human NTS cases from national laboratory surveillance databases for 2018-2024 were analyzed using time-series models, including autoregressive integrated moving-

Exposure to nitrogen dioxide and the risk of thyroid disorders: Two nationwide population-based studies in the UK and China.

BACKGROUND: Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a major traffic-related air pollutant, is associated with adverse health effects; however, its relationship with thyroid disorders remains poorly characterized. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the associations between long-term NO2 exposure and thyroid-related outcomes in two large population-based studies from the UK and China. METHODS: In the UK Biobank, annual NO2 concentrations at baseline residential addresses were estimated using land-use regression models, and incident thyroid disorders were identified from ICD-10-codes in linked hospital inpatient record

Non-linear associations between meteorological factors, ambient air pollutants and major mosquito-borne diseases in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Transmission intensity for mosquito-borne diseases are highly heterogenous and multi-factorial. Understanding risk factors associated to disease transmission allow the optimization of vector control. This study sets out to understand and compare the combined anthropogenic and environmental risk factors of four major mosquito-borne diseases, dengue, malaria, chikungunya and Japanese encephalitis in Thailand. METHODS: An integrated analysis of mosquito-borne diseases, meteorological and ambient air pollutants of 76 provinces of Thailand was conducted over 2003-2021. We explored the

How to translate neurocognitive and behavioural outcome data in animals exposed to paracetamol to the human perinatal setting?

INTRODUCTION: There are epidemiological - not necessary causal - observations that link perinatal paracetamol (acetaminophen) exposure to impaired neuro-cognition and behaviour, but animal models may assist to better understand the mechanisms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To provide an overview on preclinical data and mechanisms explored, we conducted a structured literature search on animal models and neuro-cognition and behavioural outcome following perinatal paracetamol exposure. RESULTS: This search resulted in 20 papers (rat (n = 9), zebrafish larvae (n = 6), mice (n = 5)), published between 2

The Estimation and Projection Package Age-Sex Model and the r-hybrid model: new tools for estimating HIV incidence trends in sub-Saharan Africa.

OBJECTIVES: Improve models for estimating HIV epidemic trends in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). DESIGN: Mathematical epidemic model fit to national HIV survey and ANC sentinel surveillance (ANC-SS) data. METHODS: We modified EPP to incorporate age and sex stratification (EPP-ASM) to more accurately capture the shifting demographics of maturing HIV epidemics. Secondly, we developed a new functional form for the HIV transmission rate, termed 'r-hybrid', which combines a four-parameter logistic function for the initial epidemic growth, peak, and decline followed by a first-order random walk for rece

Faced with the recurrent evolution of resistance to pesticides and drugs, the scientific community has developed theoretical models aimed at … trast, the other group, led by medical scientists, is interested in human parasites and mostly uses epidemiological models to study the evolution of resistance to antibiotic and antiviral drugs. Our analyses suggested that there is also a small scientific group focusing on resistance to antimalaria drugs, and which is only poorly connected with the two larger groups. Th …

Spatial and temporal heterogeneities of district-level typhoid morbidities in Ghana: A requisite insight for informed public health response.

Typhoid fever is estimated to cause between 9.9-24.2 million cases and 75,000-208,000 deaths per year globally. Low-income and middle-income countries report the majority of cases, especially those in sub-Saharan Africa. The epidemiology of typhoid fever is poorly understood, particularly in Ghana where there has been no study of the within-country variation. Our objective was to explore and analyze the spatial and temporal patterns of typhoid fever morbidities in Ghana. We used the global and local Moran's indices to uncover the existence of global and local spatial patterns, respectively. Ge

Environmental Investigation during Legionellosis Outbreak, Montérégie, Quebec, Canada, 2021.

In August 2021, a legionellosis outbreak involving 7 persons occurred within a 500-meter radius in the Montérégie region of Québec, Canada. Near real-time modeling of wind direction along with epidemiologic and environmental investigations identified the possible source. Modeling wind direction could help identify likely Legionella pneumophila sources during legionellosis outbreaks.

Profile and temporal dynamics of the feline sporotrichosis epidemic in southern Brazil: A forecasting analysis.

A detailed clinical-epidemiological analysis of feline sporotrichosis was conducted, and 288 cases reported between the years 2007 and 2018 were analyzed. The studied cases primarily involved mongrel cats (240/260), males (212/282), and adults (121/200). The main objectives were to identify the risk factors, calculate the monthly incidence rates, and establish a predictive model using the seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) approach. The statistical analysis revealed significant associations (p < 0.05) between prolonged lesion evolution times and factors such as respirat

Exposure-response relationship in the hand-arm vibration syndrome: an overview of current epidemiology research.

The complex of vascular, neurologic, and osteoarticular disorders occurring in the upper limbs of vibration-exposed workers is called hand-arm vibration syndrome. There is epidemiologic evidence for an increased occurrence of peripheral sensorineural disorders in occupational groups working with vibrating tools. An excess risk for wrist osteoarthrosis and for elbow arthrosis and osteophytosis has been reported in workers exposed to shocks and low-frequency vibration of high magnitude from percussive tools. However, there are too few epidemiology data to enable reliable conclusions to be drawn

On the Mathematical Modeling and Control of West Nile Virus in Highly Endemic Areas of Italy.

We present a novel epidemiological model integrating larval and adult mosquito dynamics to evaluate open-loop control strategies for West Nile Virus (WNV). The model incorporates temperature and day-length dependencies, along with a novel function for non-diapausing mosquitoes, capturing key epidemiological trends in North-Eastern Italy. Simulations compare larvicide and adulticide interventions at varying doses, durations, and efficacy levels. Results show that while adulticides provide rapid but temporary suppression, sustained high-dose larvicide treatments improve long-term stability. An o

Genomic epidemiology unveils the dynamics and spatial corridor behind the Yellow Fever virus outbreak in Southern Brazil.

Despite the considerable morbidity and mortality of yellow fever virus (YFV) infections in Brazil, our understanding of disease outbreaks is hampered by limited viral genomic data. Here, through a combination of phylogenetic and epidemiological models, we reconstructed the recent transmission history of YFV within different epidemic seasons in Brazil. A suitability index based on the highly domesticated Aedes aegypti was able to capture the seasonality of reported human infections. Spatial modeling revealed spatial hotspots with both past reporting and low vaccination coverage, which coincided…
