C5a were generated in human plasma by incubation with zymosan in the presence of a carboxypeptidase B inhibitor. The carboxypeptidase inhibitor was added to prevent cleavage of the carboxyl terminal arginine from C5a and enabled it to be purified on the basis of spasmogenic activity on the guinea-pig isolated ileum. RATIONALE: Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease with unknown etiology. It affects mainly the lungs, but it can affect almost any other organ. Nevertheless, pleural involvement with the development of pleural effusion is relatively rare. It is usually mild and responsive to treatment with systemic steroids. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical and computed tomography (CT) features associated with severe and critical coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE: The hemiparasitic species Psittacanthus plagiophyllus Eichl. (Loranthaceae), also known as erva de passarinho, is used in folk medicine in the Santarém region in the state of Pará, Brazil, to treat gastritis and a variety of inflammatory disorders. In view of the lack of pharmacological studies on this species in the literature and the fact that it is used constantly by the local population, this study sought to standardize the extract of the leaves of P. plagiophyllus (AEPp) and to assess its anti-inflammatory potential in in vivo tests.

This report describes the association of developmental glaucoma with bilateral optic disc pits and uveal effusion. A case of developmental glaucoma (isolated trabeculodysgenesis) presented with bilateral optic disc pits and uveal effusion detected on ultrasound biomicroscopy. Uveal effusion and optic disc pits could be associated with bilateral developmental glaucoma. The constellation of symptoms reported here have not been previously described in the literature and thus merit exploration.

UNLABELLED: The association between wound drainage and subsequent periprosthetic infection is well known. However, the most appropriate treatment of wound drainage is not well understood. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 10,325 patients (11,785 procedures), among whom 300 patients (2.9%) developed persistent (greater than 48 hours postoperatively) wound drainage.
