Multidrug-, methicillin-, and vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from ready-to-eat meat sandwiches: An ongoing food and public health concern.

Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and their antimicrobial resistance pose exacerbating global health threats and endangering everyone. Thus, the prevalence, molecular characterization of virulence genes, and antimicrobial resistance patterns of strains isolated from 225 beef burger and hot dog sandwiches vended in Mansoura city, Egypt were determined. 83.1% of the sandwiches tested were contaminated with coagulase-positive S. aureus, with a mean count of 4 × 103 CFU/g. Genes encoding mecA, α-hemolysin, staphylococcal enterotoxins, and toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 were detected in 22.6%, 9

Consumption of ultra-processed food products and its effects on children's lipid profiles: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cardiovascular disease development is related to known risk factors (such as diet and blood lipids) that begin in childhood. Among dietary factors, the consumption of ultra-processing products has received attention. This study investigated whether children's consumption of processed and ultra-processing products at preschool age predicted an increase in lipid concentrations from preschool to school age. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cohort study conducted with 345 children of low socioeconomic status from São Leopoldo, Brazil, aged 3-4 years and 7-8 years. Blood tests were done t

Automated Check-Ins to Care Assistant? The Use of Kiosks in the School Health Room.

From airlines and hotels to fast food restaurants, kiosks play a role in many businesses, replacing what was once a human helping to make a reservation, check in, or place an order. Therefore, it is no surprise that kiosks are also being used in healthcare settings. Kiosks in the school health office, with the appropriate school population, can be a valuable school nurse tool. Kiosks can be used for student check-in and tracking as well as a means for data collection and report generation. However, there are potential drawbacks and areas where this technology could be improved and further eval

[Christmas article: A tribute to Dionysos].

"Another round" by the Danish film director Thomas Vinterberg is the story of four friends who (inspired by a theory from the Norwegian psychiatrist Finn Skårderud that modest intoxication would open our minds to the world around us) set out to "test", that if they maintain a 0.05% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) during work hours, it will improve their creativity and mindset. Several studies suggest, that food in the stomach before drinking not only leads to a lowering of the peak BAC but also boosts the rate of ethanol metabolism, and other findings indicate, that the BAC is higher after d

Successful neurological outcome of a child with classical phenylketonuria and acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a 7-year follow-up.

We report on the medical management and outcome of a child with classical phenylketonuria (PKU) who developed acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Chemotherapy began at 24 months of age. Initial problems associated with treatment lead to remarkable releases of phenylalanine, a neurotoxin. Causes included increased catabolism secondary to tumor lysis and chemotherapy, as well as infection, intermittent fasting and anorexia. Medical management involved daily monitoring of Phe levels and major changes in the amount of medical formula and the intake of protein containing foods in the diet. The chil

Major dietary patterns of community dwelling adults and their associations with impaired blood glucose and central obesity in Eastern Ethiopia: Diet-disease epidemiological study.

BACKGROUNDS: Unhealthy dietary intake is an important preventable risk factor for obesity and impaired blood glucose (IBG), ultimately increasing the risk of non-communicable diseases. When compared to individual food intakes, dietary patterns are a stronger predictor of health outcomes and should be systematically evaluated where such evidence is lacking. This study evaluated dietary patterns and their association with the risk of central obesity and IBG among adults. METHODS: A community-based survey was conducted among 501 randomly-selected adults from Eastern Ethiopia. Data was collected

Food-driven inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease: Dietary instigators and emerging nutritional strategies.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is influenced not only by genetics and immunity but also profoundly by dietary factors. Emerging research identifies specific food components - such as ultra-processed foods, high-fat diets, and red meats - as potent exacerbators of intestinal inflammation through mechanisms involving dysbiosis, immune activation, and gut barrier disruption. Conversely, fiber-rich, fermented, and certain dairy products may confer protective effects by enhancing microbiota diversity and mucosal integrity. Patient-specific factor

Overcoming the sensitivity-stability trade-off in colorimetric food sensors using immersion-electrospun natural anthocyanin-loaded PCL/PVP membrane.

Colorimetric pH indicators provide a visual means to monitor food freshness but often suffer from a sensitivity-stability trade-off. In this study, a bio-based sensor was developed by incorporating natural anthocyanins into immersion-electrospun PCL/PVP membranes. The optimized I41 membrane (PCL:PVP = 4:1) exhibited a helical-strip morphology with a high surface-area-to-volume ratio, enabling rapid analyte diffusion and strong color responsiveness. It showed a fast ammonia response (∼43 % within 1 min), excellent reversibility over ten acid-base cycles, and stable color retention over 14 days

Anti-diabetic properties of yellowfin tuna protein hydrolysates and identification and screening of novel anti-diabetic peptides against α-amylase and DPP-IV.

Bioactive peptides derived from fishery by-products show potential in managing chronic diseases, highlighting their value in functional food and healthcare product development. This study utilized yellowfin tuna trimmings to prepare an alkaline protease hydrolysates (YTPH) and investigated its potential anti-diabetic effects in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. YTPH noticeably reduced random and fasting blood glucose levels, increased serum insulin levels, enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities, and alleviated liver and kidney damage. YTPH1 and YTPH2 were isolated using G-15 gel fractionat

An extreme megaesophagus causing lung collapse.

An 83-year-old male with long-term dysphagia and weight loss was admitted due to an acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction. During hospitalization he developed hematemesis requiring several red blood cell transfusions. An upper endoscopy was attempted being interrupted due to esophageal high-volume stasis. Despite remaining fasting for several days and naso-esophageal tube drainage, three additional upper endoscopies still revealed non-removable solid food stasis in a markedly dilated esophagus and bleeding from severe underlying esophagitis. A thoracic CT confirmed an aberrant and massive e

Antidiabetic effects of water-soluble Korean pine nut protein on type 2 diabetic mice.

Korean pine nut protein (PNP) has a variety of biological activities, which are good for human health, but its ability to preventing diabetes has not been reported. This study evaluated the effects of water-soluble proteins of Korean pine nut obtained from a dilute alkali extract on carbohydrate metabolism of type 2 diabetic mice on a model of diabetes induced using a high fat diet combined with streptozotocin. The results showed that the hypoglycemic effect of PNP at a middle dose was the most significant, which was 38.7% lower than that of control. The extract significantly improved the oral

Marriage and parenthood in relation to obesogenic neighborhood trajectories: The CARDIA study.

Marriage and parenthood are associated with weight gain and residential mobility. Little is known about how obesity-relevant environmental contexts differ according to family structure. We estimated trajectories of neighborhood poverty, population density, and density of fast food restaurants, supermarkets, and commercial and public physical activity facilities for adults from a biracial cohort (CARDIA, n=4,174, aged 25-50) over 13 years (1992-93 through 2005-06) using latent growth curve analysis. We estimated associations of marriage, parenthood, and race with the observed neighborhood traje

Coupling between Nutrient Availability and Thyroid Hormone Activation.

The activity of the thyroid gland is stimulated by food availability via leptin-induced thyrotropin-releasing hormone/thyroid-stimulating hormone expression. Here we show that food availability also stimulates thyroid hormone activation by accelerating the conversion of thyroxine to triiodothyronine via type 2 deiodinase in mouse skeletal muscle and in a cell model transitioning from 0.1 to 10% FBS. The underlying mechanism is transcriptional derepression of DIO2 through the mTORC2 pathway as defined in rictor knockdown cells. In cells kept in 0.1% FBS, there is DIO2 inhibition via FOXO1 bindi

Verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli O157: public health and microbiological significance.

Escherichia coli O157 was recognised as a human pathogen in the late 1970s, its public health significance being recognised in 1982 when it was implicated in a large outbreak of infection associated with a fast-food restaurant in North America. Incidence of infection in the population is relatively low compared to other enteric pathogens; however, this organism causes a spectrum of disease increasing in severity from a mild diarrhoeal illness to haemorrhagic colitis, haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) and, in some cases, death. Production of verocytotoxin and intimin, and the presence of a 60 m

Predicting mood swings in women of reproductive age using machine learning on metabolic, menstrual, and lifestyle indicators.

BACKGROUND: Mood swings in reproductive-age women arise from interacting hormonal, metabolic, and lifestyle factors, yet scalable screening tools remain limited. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) approaches offer the potential to integrate diverse predictors and enable early, data-driven risk stratification. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of ML algorithms in predicting mood swings among reproductive-age women using menstrual, metabolic, and lifestyle survey data and to identify the most influential predictors. METHODS: The study cohort included 465 reproductive-a

The urban paradox persists: Spatial stationarity in obesity determinants in post-pandemic England.

OBJECTIVES: Adult obesity prevalence exhibits significant spatial disparities across England. While traditional global regression models often overlook local variations, it is unclear whether these relationships vary spatially or remain stable. This study aims to robustly identify determinants of clinical obesity and test for spatial non-stationarity using best-practice diagnostics. METHODS: Using 2023/24 data from 151 Upper Tier Local Authorities, we employed a spatial econometric framework. We specified a row-standardized Queen's contiguity matrix for global models.
