Potential mosquito vector attraction to- and feeding preferences for pigs in Romanian backyard farms.

INTRODUCTION: Mosquitoes either biologically or mechanically transmit various vector-borne pathogens affecting pigs. Mosquito species display a wide variety of host preference, as well as host attraction and behaviours. Mosquito species attraction rates to- and feeding rates on pigs or other potential hosts, as well as the seasonal abundance of the mosquito species affects their pathogen transmission potential. METHODS: We caught mosquitoes in experimental cages containing pigs situated in Romanian backyard farms. The host species of blood meals were identified with PCR and sequencing. RESUL

Breastfeeding results in better hearing in newborns compared to bottle-feeding.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) are a validated technique in newborn hearing screening that is regularly used in many countries. It reflects normal hearing or at least no more than 30 dB HL hearing loss. Breastfeeding has many advantages and some studies have demonstrated that it prevents otitis media by means of opening the Eustachian tube and clearing mucus in the middle ear which is perhaps also combined with immunological effects. A few studies have related how newborn feeding can vary the pass rate to TEOAE. The goal of this study was to investigate the

"I'm Doing the Best That I Can for Her": Infant-Feeding Decisions of Mothers Receiving Medication-Assisted Treatment for an Opioid Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Several professional health organizations have made statements endorsing the safety of breastfeeding for women taking medication-assisted treatment for an opioid use disorder. Yet, breastfeeding initiation rates for this population are approximately 50% lower than the general United States' population. Furthermore, little is known about what influences the infant-feeding decisions of these women. Research aim: This study aimed to describe what influences the infant-feeding decisions of women taking medication-assisted treatment for an opioid use disorder. METHODS: Qualitative desc

Premature delivery reduces intestinal cytoskeleton, metabolism, and stress response proteins in newborn formula-fed pigs.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm infants often show intolerance to the first enteral feeds, and the structural and functional basis of this intolerance remains unclear. We hypothesized that preterm and term neonates show similar gut trophic responses to feeding but different expression of intestinal functional proteins, thus helping to explain why preterm neonates are more susceptible to feeding-induced disorders such as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). METHODS: Incidence of feeding-induced NEC, intestinal mass, and brush border enzyme activities, and the intestinal proteome in preterm cesarean-delivered p

Binge eating is associated with right orbitofrontal-insular-striatal atrophy in frontotemporal dementia.

BACKGROUND: Neurophysiologic studies on human and nonhuman primates implicate an orbitofrontal-insular-striatal circuit in high-level regulation of feeding. However, the role of these areas in determining feeding disturbances in neurologic patients remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: To determine brain structures critical for control of eating behavior, we performed a prospective, laboratory-based, free-feeding study of 18 healthy control subjects and 32 patients with neurodegenerative disease. MR voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used to identify regions of significant atrophy in patie

Supplemental feeding in the first days of life -- effects on the recipient infant.

AIM: Since clinical indications may necessitate the feeding of supplements to newborn infants, the effects of different supplemental feedings on the recipient infants were studied. METHODS: Two groups of healthy, term newborn infants (n = 64 in each group) were investigated. The mothers breast-fed their infants, and by indication the babies were additionally fed supplement A (supplementary neonatal formula, 78 kcal/dl) or the traditionally used supplement B (glucosaccharide solution, 100 kcal/dl). The differences in volume and energy intake, weight development and rate of hyperbilirubinemia w

A multicenter, prospective study of the placement of transpyloric feeding tubes with assistance of a magnetic device. The Magnet-Guided Enteral Feeding Tube Study Group.

BACKGROUND: Placement of feeding tubes in the transpyloric position can be helpful in the management of enterally fed patients with pancreatitis, gastric atony, enterocutaneous fistulae, or pulmonary aspiration risk. The attainment of transpyloric position is difficult, and numerous techniques have been proposed to help in achieving this location. Recently, the use of a magnet-tipped feeding tube, dragged into proper position with an external magnet, has been described with an excellent success rate. METHODS: At 10 participating institutions, practitioners were trained in the use of the devic

Predictors of early hospital readmission in patients receiving home mechanical ventilation.

BACKGROUND: Although the proportion of patients with chronic respiratory failure requiring home mechanical ventilation (HMV) is increasing, … stem disorders as causes for HMV were significantly associated with early readmission. CONCLUSION: Feeding methods and causes for HMV were associated with early readmission. Educating caregivers on respiratory care (suction and feeding methods) is important for preventing early readmission.

Using Digital Dashboards to Characterise Demographics and Service Utilisation of Multi-Tiered Outpatient Paediatric Feeding Clinics: Differentiated Care for Subtypes of Paediatric Feeding Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Digital dashboards are interactive, visual displays that provide real-time identification of clinical and service performance trends. Few studies have reported their use in characterising feeding clinic care for children with paediatric feeding disorder (PFD). This study used data from a digital dashboard at a children's hospital to compare populations and service utilisation across four outpatient feeding clinics: speech pathology-only (SP-only), dietetics and speech pathology (DT-SP), occupational therapy and speech pathology (OT-SP), and dietetics, occupational therapy, and spee

Mothers' eating disorder history and mother and infant attention to food during infant meal times: a candidate for intergenerational transmission of eating disorder behaviours.

INTRODUCTION: There is evidence to suggest that individuals with eating disorders (EDs) show differences in attention to food compared to those without eating disorders. Children of mothers with eating disorders are at an elevated risk of developing an eating disorder themselves. One potential intergenerational pathway may be that parents, and then infants, pay more attention to food in interactions, which in turn mediates transmission of disordered eating behaviours, particularly those during feeding and mealtimes. No study has investigated whether mothers' ED behaviour history is associated

Adenosine triphosphate overrides the aversive effect of antifeedants and toxicants: a model alternative phagostimulant for sugar-based vector control tools.

BACKGROUND: Sugar, when used as the phagostimulant in attractive toxic bait control tools, limits the efficacy and selectivity of this technology. Thus, more potent and selective phagostimulants than sugar are required to improve this technology. The potency of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) as an alternative model phagostimulant was assessed to determine its capacity to override the aversive effects of select antifeedants and toxicants. How ATP and sucrose modulate the rate of toxicity in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti was also examined. METHODS: A no-choice feeding assay was used to
