An 11-year-old girl was seen with short stature, a head positioned in hyperextension, mild arched palate, prominent joints, limited elbow movements, hyperextensible wrists and fingers, brachydactyly, broad thorax, pectus carinatum, short trunk, a genu valgum, and flat feet. A radiographic skeletal survey revealed a generalized osteoporosis, platyspondyly, thoracic kyphoscoliosis, small and square iliac wings, short femoral necks, dysplastic epiphyses, flared metaphyses and brachydactyly with various carpal, metacarpal, and finger malformations. These features are very close to a very rare enti

Nineteen patients with PHO with onset in childhood are presented. In 7 cases the syndrome was found in other family members too. In clinical, X-ray scintigraphic, arteriographic, and plethysmographic investigations, joint affection was found in 14 patients. Clubbing of the fingers and toes was seen in all the patients and a periosteal reaction was found in the long bones in 11 patients. Arteriography was carried out in 5 patients and showed hypervascularization and arteriovenous anastomoses in the clubbed fingers. The gas analysis of the arterial blood did not show any pathological changes. Th

Calcific tendinitis is caused by the pathologic deposition of calcium hydroxyapatite crystals in tendons and is a common cause of joint pain. The disease typically affects the shoulder and hip, with characteristic imaging findings; however, any joint can be involved. Occasionally, calcific tendinitis can mimic aggressive disorders, such as infection and neoplasm, especially on magnetic resonance imaging. Radiologists should be familiar with the imaging findings to distinguish calcific tendinitis from more aggressive processes. Image-guided percutaneous needle aspiration and steroid injection o

Rheumatoid disease, as it affects the hand, is a disease of the synovium lining the joints and sheaths of the tendon. The proliferating synovium destroys the articular surfaces of the joint, interferes with the gliding mechanism of the tendons and weakens the supporting ligaments of the joints. The degree and variety of deformities is multifold. Treatment of the rheumatoid hand is aimed at conservation and restoration of hand function, as well as prevention of future deformities. Rheumatologists, physical therapists and hand surgeons carry out important functions in the well-planned, integrate

BACKGROUND: Hand osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent joint disease that may lead to pain, stiffness and problems in performing hand-related a … ence using the GRADE approach. Outcomes consisted of both continuous (hand pain, physical function, finger joint stiffness and quality of life) and dichotomous outcomes (proportions of adverse events and withdrawals).
MAIN RESULTS: We included seven studies in the review. Most studies were free from selection and reporting bias, but one study was available on …

To reconstruct finger extension in distal-type cervical spondylotic amyotrophy, wrist flexor tendons are commonly selected as the donor tendons. However, distal-type cervical spondylotic amyotrophy predominantly affects the C8 myotome, and therefore the wrist flexor muscles may also be impaired. The brachioradialis is mainly innervated by the C6 and is therefore less likely to be affected, it represents a favorable option as a donor tendon. However, there are few reports describing the use of the brachioradialis as a donor tendon. A 72-year-old man presented with limited active extension of hi

Despite medical advances, degloving injury remains one of the most difficult traumatic injuries to treat. The conventional method for treating degloving injury of the hand is reconstruction with a groin flap. However, few reports have described the mid- or long-term functional and aesthetic outcomes after a hand reconstruction with a groin flap. This case report describes a 68-year-old woman with no specific medical history who presented with a severe degloving injury of the right hand, caused by a roller machine. The area of skin loss was covered with a pedicled groin flap that was separated

AIM: Tenosynovitis is one of the most frequently described inflammatory lesions in psoriatic dactylitis. The aim of the study was to assess by ultrasound the distribution of content within the synovial sheath of the finger flexor tendons in a cadaveric experimental model of tenosynovitis and to describe anatomically the elements of the space between the flexor tendons and the palmar aspect of the proximal phalanx of the fingers.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Silicone was injected under ultrasound guidance into the digital flexor sheath of the index finger of a hand specimen. Ultrasound images of the d

Distal dorsal skin defects of the digits could be considered as a surgical entity. The coverage of this area is challenging according to the following points: the proximity of the distal interphalangeal joint, the thinness of the extensor apparatus and the vicinity of the nail. Among the numerous flaps described, the homodigital turnover pedicled flaps appear the most effective option rather than cross-finger flaps.

We report a case of progressive juvenile localized scleroderma (JLS or morphea) treated with a combination of imatinib, corticosteroids, and methotrexate. This therapy halted the progressive skin thickening and the hand and finger joint deformity in the early stages of the disease. We conclude that imatinib used in addition to standard treatment with systemic corticosteroids and methotrexate may be of therapeutic benefit for individuals with JLS.

We present a case of a closed rupture of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon of the small finger. It is our hypothesis that because of pisotriquetral instability as a result of a lesion of the pisotriquetral ligaments the flexor digitorum profundus tendon was entrapped repeatedly between the pisiform and triquetrum. This resulted in an attritional lesion of the tendon. The pisotriquetral joint showed no bone abnormalities.

A five-year-old boy, with congenital aplasia of the flexor pollicis longus, without other associated anomalies is reported. A two-stage procedure was done using a silicone rubber rod and pulley reconstruction, followed by transfer of the flexor digitorum superficialis tendon from the ring finger to the distal phalanx of the thumb. This resulted in 0/55 degrees active flexion at the interphalangeal joint.

We carried out arthrography in 19 thumbs of 18 patients in whom duplication was observed at the interphalangeal (Wassel type II) or metacarpophalangeal (Wassel type IV) joints on radiographs. The average age at surgery was 12.3 months and average duration of post-surgical follow-up was 21.3 months. Based on the arthrographic findings, the types of cartilaginous connections were subdivided into five groups. In group 1, there was a cartilaginous connection at the base of duplicated phalanges. In group 2, there was a cartilaginous connection of the radial digit between the distal and proximal pha

A simple, quick and reliable method of arthrodesis of the wrist joint enables other surgical procedures to be carried out at the same time under the same tourniquet, thus reducing strain upon the patient and the hospital services.

A male infant is described with severe micrognathia and bilateral duplication of the proximal phalanges of the index fingers, an association which is characteristic of the Catel-Manzke syndrome. In addition, he had dislocatable knees, which have not been described in this disorder before.
