The ongoing economic crisis in Lebanon has intensified food insecurity and malnutrition, increasing health risks related to mycotoxins. METHODS: A nationally representative cross-sectional study assessed exposure to multiple mycotoxins, including aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), ochratoxin A (OTA), deoxynivalenol (DON), T-2, HT-2, zearalenone (ZEA), and fumonisins (FUM) among 442 Lebanese adolescents (mean age 14.56 …

Impact of a modified produce prescription program on fruit and vegetable intake in an HBCU.

BACKGROUND: Limited access to fruits and vegetables remains a significant barrier among underserved populations, particularly within Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Evidence from previous studies suggests that prescription programs, which provide incentives for fresh produce consumption, are effective in enhancing dietary quality and alleviating food insecurity. OBJECTIVE: This pilot investigation assessed the impact of a tailored produce prescription intervention on changes in fruit and vegetable consumption among students at a Historically Black College and University …

High‑magnesium waters and soils: Emerging environmental and food security constraints.

Food insecurity and declining availability of freshwater and new productive land in water-scarce areas and countries necessitate effective use of marginal-quality waters and underperforming soils. High‑magnesium waters and soils are emerging examples of water quality deterioration and land degradation leading to environmental and food security constraints in several irrigation schemes. A ratio of magnesium-to-calcium > 1 in irrigation waters and an exchangeable magnesium percentage > 25% in soils are considered high enough to result in soil degradation and impact crop yields negatively. These …

Cryptosporidium hominis Is a Newly Recognized Pathogen in the Arctic Region of Nunavik, Canada: Molecular Characterization of an Outbreak.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium is a leading cause of childhood diarrhea in low-resource settings, and has been repeatedly associated with impaired physical and cognitive development. In May 2013, an outbreak of diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium hominis was identified in the Arctic region of Nunavik, Quebec. Human cryptosporidiosis transmission was previously unknown in this region, and very few previous studies have reported it elsewhere in the Arctic. We report clinical, molecular, and epidemiologic details of a multi-village Cryptosporidium outbreak in the Canadian Arctic. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIP

Barriers and outcomes: TB patients co-infected with HIV accessing antiretroviral therapy in rural Zambia.

The vulnerabilities that underlie barriers faced by the rural poor whilst trying to access and adhere to "free" antiretroviral treatment (ART) demand more attention. This paper highlights barriers that poor rural Zambians co-infected with tuberculosis (TB) and HIV and their households faced in accessing ART between September 2006 and July 2007, and accounts for patient outcomes by the end of TB treatment and (more sporadically) beyond October 2009. The analysis draws on findings from wider anthropological fieldwork on the converging impact of TB, HIV and food insecurity, focusing for the purpo…

BACKGROUND: Fruits and vegetables (FV) are a critical source of nutrients, yet children in the United States are not meeting the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA). The monthly FV cash value benefit (CVB) included in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)'s food package to support child FV intake (FVI) received a substantial increase for economic relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate how an expansion of the monthly WIC CVB to purchase FV for WIC children ages 1-4 y is associated with diversity in FV redeemed, and how change

Context-Tailored Food-Based Nutrition Education and Counseling for Pregnant Women to Improve Birth Outcomes: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial in Rural Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate maternal dietary intakes remain a public health challenge in low-income countries like Malawi and can cause adverse birth outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To improve maternal dietary intakes and thus reduce the prevalence of adverse birth outcomes in rural Malawi. METHODS: We performed a 2-armed (1:1) cluster-randomized controlled trial in Southern Malawi, enrolling pregnant women at gestational age 12-18 wk. Twenty villages (clusters) were randomly assigned to an intervention or a control group. A nutrition education and counseling (NEC) intervention consisted of education sessi
