Four-hundred consecutive referrals with viral warts of the hands and/or feet were investigated to determine the cure rate from a combination of cryotherapy, keratolytic wart paint and paring. For treatment failures after 3 months, the value of continuing cryotherapy and of additional treatment with the immunomodulator inosine pranobex were assessed. Subjects were treated for 3 months with wart paint and cryotherapy and were randomized to receive, or not, paring in addition. Those who did not respond by 3 months were randomized to receive, or not, 3 months further cryotherapy, and to receive in

BACKGROUND: Plantar warts (verrucae plantaris), caused by human papillomavirus, are common and often resistant to standard therapies, which can be painful and damaging. Novel, noninvasive options are needed.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and preliminary efficacy of a topical nitric oxide-releasing solution (NORS) as a self-administered therapy for plantar warts.
METHODS: In this Phase 2a, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 20 participants with ≥3 plantar warts were randomized (1:1:1) to NORS 1X (41.1 PPM·min), NORS 3X (121.9 PPM·min), or placebo. Participant

Topical antifungals are widely used for onychomycosis; however, lesion-level morphological predictors of response have rarely been quantified while accounting for within-patient correlation. We retrospectively studied patients with onychomycosis treated with topical luliconazole 5% nail solution or efinaconazole 10% solution between 2017 and 2021. Eighty lesions from 66 patients were identified. Treatment response was evaluated using lesion-level generalized estimating equations (GEE) clustered by patient ID with an exchangeable working correlation structure and robust (sandwich) standard erro

Onychomycosis is a chronic and intractable disease whose prevalence increases during aging. In elderly patients, if onychomycosis is left untreated and progresses to a severe stage it may cause functional decline of the lower limbs due to foot pain. This could lead to a decline in activities of daily living and secondary impairment such as cognitive decline. Thus, the treatment of onychomycosis in elderly patients is important. We have previously shown that fosravuconazole is relatively safe and effective for onychomycosis in elderly patients. In the present study, we continued the follow-up s

A 12-year-old boy presented with severe, bilateral foot dermatitis. Extended patch testing was performed, revealing a significant positive reaction to mixed dialkyl thioureas. A thorough review of his history revealed that he was likely being exposed through his neoprene taekwondo shoes. After implementation of allergen avoidance measures, his dermatitis resolved. This case emphasizes awareness of potential allergen exposures and offers helpful avoidance strategies.

CASE REPORT: A 12-year-old with a functional circulatory disturbance had toe nail onychomycosis caused by Trichophyton rubrum. There were no other underlying diseases.
THERAPY AND OUTCOME: Oral therapy with terbinafine 125 mg once weekly in addition to ciclopirox nail lacquer was ineffective. Two years later the disease worsened and A. versicolor was found in pure culture. A preparation of 10% terbinafine HCl in a 20% urea ointment (Onychomal®) applied daily for 4 weeks, then once weekly resulted in complete cure after 7 months.

The aim of the study was to examine the relative prevalence of dermatophytic, yeast and non-dermatophytic mould onychomycosis among diabetic patients, and to compare it with nondiabetic patients. The study included 460 consecutive diabetic patients and the same number of nondiabetic age-matched subjects attending dermatology clinics at Farwaniya Hospital, Kuwait, over a period of 4 years. All patients were examined clinically and mycologically for any evidence of onychomycosis. All cases of clinically suspected and/or mycologically proven onychomycosis were prescribed terbinafine tablets 250 m

Congenital hemidysplasia with ichthyosiform erythroderma and limb defects (CHILD) syndrome is a rare X-linked dominant disorder that is characterized by peculiar cutaneous features commonly associated with skeletal and internal organ involvement. Cutaneous verruciform xanthoma is an uncommon cutaneous manifestation of congenital hemidysplasia with ichthyosiform erythroderma and limb defects syndrome. We present a case presenting with a late onset of a large verruciform xanthoma of the right foot, in addition to the more typical cutaneous features of congenital hemidysplasia with ichthyosiform

BACKGROUND: An observational study was conducted to assess the prevalence of onychomycosis in clinically suspected diabetic neuropathic patients and to assess the reliability of the diagnosis.
METHODS: One hundred successive type 1 and 2 diabetic patients with diabetic neuropathy were followed. Diabetic neuropathy was defined by a vibration perception threshold greater than 25 V and onychomycosis by clinical diagnosis. Samples of the most affected nail were taken. Potassium hydroxide testing and culture were performed. Photographs of the nails were used by two dermatologists for diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of terbinafine-induced autoimmune hepatitis in a patient with chronic hepatitis B infection.
CASE SUMMARY: A 57-year-old Taiwanese male with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) began an oral regimen of terbinafine 250 mg once daily for dermatophyte toenail onychomycosis, despite the manufacturer's recommendation not to use the drug in patients with liver dysfunction. The patient's liver enzyme levels were within normal limits at initiation of therapy. Immediately prior to concluding the 12 week treatment course, he became anorexic with malaise and subsequently develope

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to estimate and compare the cost-effectiveness of the most commonly used diagnostic tests for onychomycosis: potassium hydroxide preparation (KOH), interpreted both by a dermatologist (KOH-CLINIC) and a laboratory technician (KOH-LAB); KOH with dimethyl sulfoxide (KOH-DMSO) and with chlorazol black E (KOH-CBE), interpreted by a dermatologist; culture using dermatophyte test medium, culture with Mycobiotic and Inhibitory Mold Agar (Cx); and histopathologic analysis using periodic acid-Schiff stain (PAS).
METHODS: This was a repeated-measure, blinded, cross-sectional

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can develop into many different kinds of diseases ranging from simple warts to carcinoma in situ. Some investigators have recently suggested that HPV infection could be closely related to palmoplantar epidermal cysts. The aim of this study was to determine the existence of HPV and its subtype in palmoplantar epidermal cysts of Korean patients. We investigated 13 cases of palmoplantar epidermal cysts by employing clinical, histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations. In addition, PCR was performed using HPV 57 and 60 type primers. Four of the 13 c

A 43-year-old woman presented with dryness and scaling of the lateral and posterior aspects of both heels, which was diagnosed as hyperkeratotic xerosis (Figure 1). Pertinent medical history included dry skin with winter exacerbation and painful hyperkeratosis of the heels present for many years. The patient applied a topical multivesicular cream formulation of 6% salicylic add (Salex, Healthpoint Ltd., Fort Worth, TX) to one foot b.i.d. The physician was blinded as to which foot was treated. After 2 weeks of treatment, it was apparent that the patient was applying the cream to the right foot,

Onychocola canadensis can cause onychomycosis of the toenails. Thirty-two cases have been described up to now. We report on the isolation of Onychocola canadensis from four patients with onychomycosis who acquired their infection in Belgium. Direct examination was positive. Onychocola canadensis was isolated in pure culture. According to the previously published cases, the patients affected were elderly and the preferential site of infection was the big toenail. In contrast to previous reports, we found a predominance in males. Treatment was started in all patients. Two out of the three patien
