The use of methyl methacrylate in a two-stage correction of Crouzon's/Apert's deformity.

We have employed a two-stage operative approach to the correction of Crouzon's/Apert's deformity. Extensive use of methyl methacrylate in cranioplasty and frontal bone advancement is employed to obtain finely detailed contours with excellent stability. By adhering to principles of separation of oral contamination and the methyl methacrylate, as well as the provision of adequate soft tissue coverage of the methyl methacrylate, the problems of infection and soft tissue breakdown can be minimized.

Localized, time-dependent responses of rat cranial bone to repeated mild traumatic brain injuries.

While it is well-established that bone responds dynamically to mechanical loading, the effects of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) on cranial bone composition are unclear. We hypothesized that repeated mTBI (rmTBI) would change the microstructure of cranial bones, without gross skull fractures. To address this, young adult female Piebald Viral Glaxo rats received sham, 1×, 2× or 3× closed-head mTBIs delivered at 24 h intervals, using a weight-drop device custom-built for reproducible impact. Skull bones were collected at 2 or 10 weeks after the final injury/sham procedure, imaged by micro co

Bone formation beyond the skeletal envelope using calcium phosphate granules packed into a collagen pouch-a pilot study.

In this proof-of-concept, bone neoformation beyond the skeletal envelope is explored by using a collagen pouch (n= 6) packed with calcium phosphate (CaP) granules placed over the frontal bone in sheep (n= 3). At 13 weeks, macroscopic examination showed specimens covered by an adherent fibrinous envelope with slight vascularization. Histology revealed colonization of the implant by newly formed woven bone and fibrous connective tissue. Surface osteoblasts as well as material-filled macrophages, lymphocytes, polymorphonuclear cells and giant cells were also found in large quantities surrounding …

Anatomic Variations of the Lateral Branch of the Supraorbital Nerve Observed in Endoscopic Forehead Surgery.

Surgeons dissect carefully in the medial third of the supraorbital rim to preserve the supraorbital nerve (SON) during surgical forehead rejuvenation. However, the anatomic variations of SON exit from the frontal bone have been researched in cadaver or imaging studies. In this study, we report a variation in the lateral branch of SON observed in an endoscopic view during forehead lifts. A retrospective review of 462 patients who underwent endoscopy-assisted forehead lifts between January 2013 and April 2020 was performed. Data, including the location, number, and form of the exit point and thi…

Pterygo-Maxillary Fissure as a Landmark for Localization of Internal Maxillary Artery for Use in Extracranial-Intracranial Bypass.

BACKGROUND: Internal maxillary artery (IMax) is a relatively new donor vessel used in the extracranial-intracranial bypass surgery. However, … ygomatic osteotomy was performed and temporal muscle was dissected off the zygomatic process of the frontal bone and the frontal process of the zygomatic bone and reflected inferiorly into the bony gap created by the zygomatic osteotomy. Posterior wall of the maxilla (PWoM) was palpated. Following PWoM inferiorly leads to pterygo-maxillary fissure (PMF), which …

Highly effective unconventional management of aspergillosis of the left maxillary sinus in an 11-year-old girl with rhabdomyosarcoma embryonale of the frontal sinus.

Invasive fungal infections are common causes of death in children treated for malignancies, and therefore present an important and growing clinical problem. Fungal invasion usually affects immunocompromised patients, but increased incidences are also associated with intensification of antineoplastic therapy and increased numbers of organ and bone marrow transplantations. Fungal infections in parameningeal and cerebral locations carry high risks of treatment failure. We describe the case of an 11-year-old female patient with rhabdomyosarcoma embryonale of the frontal sinuses with metastases to

Management of pure medial orbital wall fracture with autogenous bone graft.

The orbit is an irregular conical cavity formed from 7 bones including the frontal, sphenoid, zygomatic, maxillary, ethmoid, lacrimal, and palatine bones. Fractures of the internal orbit can cause a number of problems, including diplopia, ocular muscle entrapment, and enophthalmos. Although muscle entrapment is relatively rare, diplopia and enophthalmos are relatively common sequelae of internal orbital fractures. Medial orbital wall fracture is relatively uncommon and represents a challenge for its anatomical reconstruction. In this context, autogenous bone graft has been the criterion standa

Presence of accompanying head injury in patients with maxillofacial trauma.

BACKGROUND: Patients with maxillofacial fractures are at high risk of accompanying traumatic cranial injuries. Prompt determination of head injury in these patients is crucial for improving patient survival and recovery. METHODS: The records of 246 patients with maxillofacial fractures referred to the emergency department of our hospital between January 2006 and September 2009 were reviewed in this retrospective study. The patients' age and gender, cause, type and location of the maxillofacial fracture, and the cranial injuries were analyzed. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 23.61±1

[Assembly of free osseous fragments in the treatment of injuries of the external orbital area].

The good long term results obtained following the remodeling of the frontal bandeau in craniosynostosis have demonstrated the viability of large bony segments following total periosteal stripping. In this present study, this concept has been applied in the management of acute midfacial fractures and their sequelae. To try to answer the fundamental questions of how wide of an exposure is needed for the treatment of these fractures, how denuded can bone segments be and expect to survive, and above all, how frequently is primary bone grafting needed, the author resorts to the complete detachment

Impact trauma of the human temporal bone.

A cooperative study between the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and the Highway Safety Research institute of the University of Michigan was designed to study temporal bone fracture produced in cadavers subjected to realistic automotive impact situations. Utilizing sled and piston impact configurations frontal and parietal impacts were noted to produce ipsilateral and contralateral fractures of nine temporal bones in seven cadavers. The impact velocities varied between 18.1 and 25.0 mph. Using standard otologic microsurgical techniques, the temporal bones were dissected and numerous gross and

Carbonic anhydrase and bone remodeling: sulfonamide inhibition of bone resorption in organ culture.

Five sulfonamide inhibitors of carbonic anhydrase inhibited parathyroid hormone-induced resorption of bone in organ culture. The relative activities of the sulfonamides as resorption inhibitors were such as to suggest the presence of a functional carbonic anhydrase system in bone linked to the mechanism of bone resorption.

Fibrous dysplasia of bone and concomitant dysplastic changes in the dentin.

Fibrous dysplasia of bone and dentinal dysplasia have not been classified as related conditions. However, the present report describes a patient with both polyostotic fibrous dysplasia and dysplastic changes in the dentin. One bone lesion was first discovered on the right side of the mandible on a routine roentgenogram. There was an atypical radiolucency apical to a short-rooted molar with an obliterated pulp. Additional lesions were found on the left side of the mandible in the maxilla, in the frontal and occipital bones, in the ilium, in the proximal ulnae, and in the ribs. All lesions demon
