Within an observational open study on the effects of a scheduled dosage of biscuits with iron, children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis were either supplemented with biscuits supplying iron fumarate (median 3.6 mg per day) or left to their customary dietary habits. PURPOSE: To investigate the changes in the metabolome of fibroid tissue after high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment, providing insights into its potential mechanisms of action.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with uterine fibroids who scheduled for hysterectomy were included. Among them, 15 patients had HIFU previously (HIFU group), and 15 patients did not receive HIFU (Control group). The tissues of treated fibroid, myometrium, endometrium, and new-emerging fibroids were collected. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was applied for metabolomic analysis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sub-Saharan Africa and other resource-limited settings (RLS) bear the greatest burden of the HIV epidemic globally. Advantageously, the expanding access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) has resulted in increased survival of HIV individuals in the last 2 decades. Data from resource rich settings provide evidence of increased risk of comorbid conditions such as osteoporosis and fragility fractures among HIV-infected populations. We provide the first review of published and presented data synthesizing the current state of knowledge on bone health and HIV in RLS.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary syndromes frequently need the cooperation of different specialties to increase diagnostic competence. Multiple cutaneous and uterine leiomyomatosis syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by the mutations of the fumarate hydratase gene, demonstrated in 80 to 100 percent of affected individuals. This can be linked to an increased risk of renal cancer in both sexes. After 1.5 years of treatment with dimethyl fumarate (DMF) for multiple sclerosis, preceded 8 years earlier by intravenous (IV) cladribine and 1 year earlier by natalizumab, our patient developed myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). The initial manifestation was a severe drop in absolute neutrophil and lymphocyte counts.
