Mercury biomethylation assessment in the estuary of Bilbao (North of Spain).

The relationship between the microbial methylation of mercury and the microbial activities in sediments and water collected from the estuary of Bilbao (North of Spain) was studied in three different sampling points and in two different seasons. Three different cultures were prepared with a sediment slurry to distinguish between biotic and abiotic methylation pathways and the variations of the methylmercury concentration and the variations of the population of total number of bacteria (TDC), anaerobic heterotrophic bacteria (AHB), sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and Desulfovibrio were measured

Deposition and cycling of sulfur controls mercury accumulation in Isle Royale fish.

Mercury contamination of fish is a global problem. Consumption of contaminated fish is the primary route of methylmercury exposure in humans and is detrimental to health. Newly mandated reductions in anthropogenic mercury emissions aim to reduce atmospheric mercury deposition and thus mercury concentrations in fish. However, factors other than mercury deposition are important for mercury bioaccumulation in fish. In the lakes of Isle Royale, U.S.A., reduced rates of sulfate deposition since the Clean Air Act of 1970 have caused mercury concentrations in fish to decline to levels that are safe f

Ecological risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments: identifying sources and ecological hazard.

Polycyclic aromatic hyftovst ond (PAH) are nearly ubiqutous contaminants of freshwater and marine sediments. Sediment PAHs are derived from combustion of organic matter, fossil fuels, and biosynthesis by microbes. Pyrogenic PAHs, particularly those associated with combustion particles (soot), have a low accessibility and bioavailability in sediments. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons associated with petroleum, creosote, or coal tar in sediments may have a moderate accessibility/bioavailability, particularly if the PAHs are part of a nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) phase that is in contact with s

Aggregate settling velocity of combined sewage overflow.

In order to better model the fate and transport of material in a combined sewer overflow (CSO), hydrologic and geochemical measurements were made during a storm event in Flushing Bay, NY, USA. Particle size, total suspended solids concentrations, and CSO solid density are used to calculate the settling velocity of aggregates of the CSO material. Roughly half of the material that is discharged from the outfall sinks rapidly to the bottom, while the other half forms a turbid surface plume in fresher water. The dry solid density of the CSO material was 1589 kg m(-3) and the volume fraction of sol

A model approach for evaluating effects of remedial actions on mercury speciation and transport in a lake system.

This paper provides a model approach for understanding mercury cycling in aquatic systems. The information gained is then used for evaluating three remedial actions, namely, natural attenuation, dredging and capping. Onondaga Lake, NY was used as a model aquatic system. Mercury transport and speciation in both the water column and the benthic sediment were simulated by using a Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program. Model predictions for the water column generally agreed with the measured values reported in literature for Onondaga Lake. Sensitivity analyses of the model were conducted for d

Biotransformation of tributyltin to tin in freshwater river-bed sediments contaminated by an organotin release.

The largest documented release of organotin compounds to a freshwater river system in the United States occurred in early 2000 in central South Carolina. The release consisted of an unknown volume of various organotin compounds such tetrabutyltin (TTBT), tributyltin (TBT), tetraoctyltin (TTOT), and trioctyl tin (TOT) and resulted in a massive fish kill and the permanent closures of a municipal wastewater treatment plant and a local city's only drinking-water intake. Initial sampling events in 2000 and 2001 indicated that concentrations of the ecologically toxic TTBT and TBT were each greater t

EPR characterization of the catalytic activity of clays for PCE removal by gamma-radiation induced by acid and thermal treatments.

Clays from tidal flat sediments showed efficient catalytic activity in the decomposition of PCE by gamma-radiation. The highest PCE removal of 98.6% was obtained with clays heated to 700 degrees C after acid treatment. The improved catalytic activity was identified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The EPR spectra of clays were significantly changed by the acid and thermal treatments. The intensity of a narrow signal at g=2 (signal III) was decreased with increasing thermal treatment temperature and this increased the PCE removal efficiency. The acid treatment completely r

Optimizing detection limits for the analysis of petroleum hydrocarbons in complex environmental samples.

To evaluate the sources, transport, bioremediation, fate, and effects of spilled petroleum and petroleum products, environmental studies often measure parent and alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), alkanes, and chemical biomarkers (e.g., triterpanes). Accurate data for low analyte concentrations are required when environmental samples contain hydrocarbons from multiple sources that need to be resolved and quantified. The accuracy and usefulness of the analyses can be improved by lowering the method detection limits (MDLs) for these compounds. Misidentification of hydrocarbon sour

Horizontal and vertical variabilities of mercury concentration and speciation in sediments of the Gdansk Basin, Southern Baltic Sea.

The mercury compounds introduced to the environment because of anthropogenic activity are accumulated, mainly, in marine sediments. Both distribution of mercury in the Baltic Sea and factors affecting it are remain largely unknown. Due to its complex chemistry and variable conditions in the Baltic Sea bottom sediments, mercury may be reemitted to the overlaying water, and thus to the environment. The aim of this study was twofold. Total mercury contents were measured in sediments of the Gdansk Basin along a Vistula mouth (main source)--Gdansk Deep (deposition area) transect in order to assess

Trace determination of organotin compounds in water, sediment and mussel samples by low-pressure gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry.

A fast method for the determination of eight organotin compounds (OTs), monobutyltin (MBT), dibutyltin (DBT), tributyltin (TBT), tetrabutyltin (TeBT), monophenyltin (MPhT), diphenyltin (DPhT), triphenyltin (TPhT) and tetraphenyltin (TePhT), in water, sediments and mussels, was developed using low-pressure gas chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LPGC/MS/MS). The method is based on sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) complexation of the ionic organotins, followed by extraction of the target matrices and derivatization by a Grignard reagent, as described in a previously published method for

An experimental ecotoxicological study and its application to the behavioural study of organic mercury (CH3HgCl) in the environment: influence of temperature and pH.

Laboratory experiments were carried out to study the influence of temperature (24, 28 and 30 degrees C) and pH (1-10) on organic mercury (CH3HgCl) transfer and accumulation in an experimental ecotoxicological model. We followed the evolution of CH3HgCl in a basic model (water + air) by varying temperature and pH. In a second step, we completed the model by adding sediment and fish. We added CH3HgCI to water at the beginning of each experiment which was repeated at least three times. Results demonstrated that mercury was released from methylmercury into the air regardless of water pH and its co

Effect of Mixed Coal Fly Ash (CFA) and Oyster Shells (OS) on Benthic Nutrient Removal in Eutrophic Coastal Sediments: Microcosm Experiment.

Valorization of mariculture and industrial solid wastes of oyster shell (OS) and coal fly ash (CFA) into granulated sediment amendments offers a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional landfill disposal. This study evaluates the geochemical effects of granulated OS-CFA at three mixing ratios (1:1, 1:3, and 3:1) on nutrient dynamics in polluted coastal sediments through a 120-day microcosm experiment. Thermally treated OS-CFA enhances pollutant adsorption by increasing porosity and active surface sites, effectively suppressing nutrient release from sediment in

Using GIS, remote-sensing and linear modeling to prioritize spatially explicit action against erosion and sediment transport within Lake Victoria watershed in Kenya.

Watershed degradation from human encroachment is a worldwide phenomenon and a keystone driver of erosion, transport and deposition of sediment material into downstream lakes and other water bodies. Despite global recognition of the growing scale of these linkages, comprehensive evaluation and ranking of the range of specific parameters associated catchment destruction and subsequent sediment movement, or those contributing to its mitigation, has rarely been undertaken. This study applied GIS with remote-sensing with linear modeling to assess influence of geomorphic and hydrological as well as

Oxic Subseafloor Microbial Communities Retain Anabolic Capacity under both Oxic and Oxygen-depleted Conditions.

Marine subseafloor sediments underlying open ocean regions are predominantly low-energy environments; however, they harbor vast microbial populations. How these communities persist and whether they retain anabolic capacity during transient oxygen depletion remain unclear. We herein investigated oxic sediments from the South Atlantic Gyre (SAG; IODP Site U1559D, core 7X-1) using paired incubations under oxic and anoxic (oxygen-depleted) conditions with defined C/N amendments. Sediments were amended with a 13C-amino acid mix+15N-ammonium, 13C-bicarbonate+15N-ammonium, or 15N-ammonium only and th

Transferable optrA-mediated linezolid resistance in enterococci from high-altitude river sediments of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.

UNLABELLED: Environmental dissemination of antimicrobial resistance is a growing global concern. This study investigated the occurrence, genetic context, and mobility of the oxazolidinone resistance genes in enterococci isolated from high-altitude river sediments in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. A total of 17 florfenicol-resistant enterococci were recovered from 3 of the 12 sampling sites analyzed. Four multidrug-resistant strains (two Enterococcus faecium, one E. faecalis, and one E. hirae) harboring the optrA gene were selected for whole-genome sequencing using Illumina and Nanopo

Microbial adaptation and environmental co-selection drive antimicrobial resistance risk in agricultural ditches, evidence from the multilevel ditch-river continuum.

Channel connectivity reshapes chemical and microbial compositions. About 94% of ditches discharged to natural streams flowing to the ocean, facilitating the downstream transport of antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and thereby, posing potential public health risks. Interconnected collector ditch, branch ditch, and main ditch link to the connect river, forming the multilevel ditch-river continuum (MDRC) system, which intensifies the hydrologic connectivity and further promotes the accumulation of antibiotics and AMR in sediments. However, the composition, distribution, and risk of

A robust method for the simultaneous quantification of 30 legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) across multiple marine media.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a class of novel, persistent, bioaccumulative, and globally concerning pollutants, are ubiquitous in marine environments and significantly threaten ecosystem health. The high salinity and complex matrices of marine environments present significant analytical challenges, and existing methods are limited in terms of medium coverage, target diversity, and interference resistance. Therefore, developing a reliable method for simultaneously analyzing trace PFAS across multiple environmental media is critical. To investigate the occurrence, partitioning, an

Wastewater-impacted Skagerrak Sea microbiomes anaerobically demethylate micropollutants.

Methylated micropollutants such as naproxen and caffeine persist in wastewater effluents and accumulate in coastal sediments, including Hakefjorden, Skagerrak Sea, yet their anaerobic fate and role in methane emissions remain unresolved. In particular, it is unclear whether pollutant-derived methyl groups are routed mainly to CO₂ or can be transformed into CH₄ in sulfate-rich coastal sediments. Our primary objective was to resolve this routing by tracing the fate and microbiome responses to ¹³C-labeled naproxen and caffeine in sediment microcosms. We show that naproxen underwent rapid O-demeth

Antibiotic resistance gradient along a large Scandinavian river influenced by wastewater treatment plants.

Recent studies have identified the environment as a key reservoir from which antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) can be acquired and transmitted to pathogens. However, our knowledge about the presence of ARGs in high-flow river sediments is still limited. We analyzed the resistome of sediment bacterial communities along the Swedish river Göta Älv and investigated the potential dissemination of ARGs and antimicrobials from effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). While we detected nine different antimicrobials in the effluent water from the WWTPs through HPLC-MS, their presence was not
