HIV Testing Among Transgender and Other Gender-Diverse Persons in the United States: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: An overview of existing research on HIV testing among transgender and other gender-diverse (TGD) populations in the United States, critical for developing effective future interventions and research, is missing. METHODS: Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis, 3 databases (CINAHL, PubMed/Medline, PsycINFO) were searched for studies reporting in English on HIV testing behavior that focused on or included TGD persons, published in the past decade (February 2, 2013 to February 2, 2023). Twenty-six studies were included and extracted using Coviden

Inflammatory and redox reprogramming of macrophages by HIV cell-to-cell transmission inhibits bone resorption capacity.

INTRODUCTION: People with HIV experience bone loss, but how viral spread perturbs osteoclastogenesis remains unclear. We asked whether cell-to-cell transmission of HIV from infected CD4+ T cells to macrophages reprograms precursors and impairs osteoclast differentiation. METHODS: We co-cultured Jurkat cells infected with R5- or X4-tropic HIV with human monocyte-derived macrophages (M0/M1/M2) and quantified infection (p24/GFP), inflammasome activation and death (IL-1β, AnnexinV/7-AAD, z-YVAD), adhesion molecules/tetraspanins (ICAM-1, LFA-1, CD9/CD63/CD81), mROS (MitoSOX, NAC), polarization mar

Main Partner Relationships and the HIV Care Cascade: Examining the Predictive Utility of Sexual Agreements, Partner Concordance, and Drug Use Among Sexual Minority Men Living With HIV in the USA.

BACKGROUND: The past 15 years have seen increasing attention to relationship factors among sexual minority male (SMM) couples at high risk for HIV infection. Research has largely focused on HIV prevention outcomes. Outcomes relevant to SMM living with HIV have received relatively less attention. PURPOSE: This study evaluated associations between relational covariates (relationship status, sexual agreements, and seroconcordance) and HIV care cascade outcomes (having a current antiretroviral therapy [ART] prescription, ART adherence, viral load (VL) testing, and VL detectability) above and beyo

Development of a Machine Learning Modeling Tool for Predicting HIV Incidence Using Public Health Data From a County in the Southern United States.

BACKGROUND: Advancements in machine learning (ML) have improved the accuracy of models that predict human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) incidence. These models have used electronic medical records and registries. We aim to broaden the application of these tools by using deidentified public health datasets for notifiable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) from a southern US county known for high HIV incidence. The goal is to assess the feasibility and accuracy of ML in predicting HIV incidence, which could inform and enhance public health interventions. METHODS: We analyzed 2 deidentified p

Health department-HIV clinic integration of data and human resources to re-engage out of care HIV-positive persons into clinical care in a New York City locale.

We describe an enhanced data to care (eD2C) initiative combining New York City (NYC) Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) HIV surveillance data and a collaborating HIV clinic records to identify and re-engage into care persons living with HIV (PLWH), and presumed to be out of care (OOC). DOHMH identified presumed-OOC persons who lacked recent HIV-related laboratory test reports (e.g., viral load, CD4) in the NYC surveillance registry, and whose last laboratory reports were from the collaborating clinic. The clinic then obtained the current care status of the presumed-OOC persons per

Acceptability of HIV testing for men attending televised football venues in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, HIV remains a major public health challenge, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. Literature indicates that men's involvement in HIV testing, care, and treatment services is lower compared to women, therefore novel approaches are required to engage men in the cascade of HIV care. This study aimed to explore men's perception on the provision of HIV testing services in venues where English Premier League football games are televised. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study was conducted between February and May 2018. Six focus group discussions were conducted with 50 conve

Assessing the levels of HIV-related knowledge and attitudes toward HIV-infected patients among undergraduate dental students: a cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Worldwide, in the last decade, the numbers of new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths have drastically decreased. Despite that, around 18 million infected individuals receive antiretroviral therapy and thus tend to live longer. This cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the level of HIV-related knowledge among undergraduate dental students at Ain Shams University (ASU) in Cairo, Egypt and to determine their attitudes toward treating HIV-positive patients. METHODS: The study sample included 247 undergraduate dental students of third, fourth, and fifth academic years at the

HIV-1 Vif inhibits G to A hypermutations catalyzed by virus-encapsidated APOBEC3G to maintain HIV-1 infectivity.

BACKGROUND: HIV-1 viral infectivity factor (Vif) is an essential accessory protein for HIV-1 replication. The predominant function of Vif is to counteract Apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme-catalytic polypeptide-like 3G (APOBEC3G, A3G), a potent host restriction factor that inhibits HIV-1 replication. Vif mediates the proteasomal degradation of A3G and inhibits A3G translation, thus diminishing the pool of A3G that is available to be packaged into budding virion. Although Vif is robust in degrading A3G, the protection provided against A3G is not absolute. Clinical and laboratory evidence hav

Estimating population size, HIV prevalence and HIV incidence among men who have sex with men: a case example of synthesising multiple empirical data sources and methods in San Francisco.

OBJECTIVE: The number of persons living with HIV/AIDS, the number of new infections and the number of persons at risk for HIV infection are the foundations of evidence-based prevention, treatment and care planning. However, few jurisdictions have complete and accurate estimates of these indicators. HIV/AIDS case reporting, which includes only persons diagnosed with infection and reported to health departments, does not reflect all HIV/AIDS cases, thus underestimating the true size of the epidemic. Obtaining direct measures of HIV incidence is methodologically challenging. Moreover, no censuses

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) transactivator of transcription through its intact core and cysteine-rich domains inhibits Wnt/β-catenin signaling in astrocytes: relevance to HIV neuropathogenesis.

Wnt/β-catenin is a neuroprotective pathway regulating cell fate commitment in the CNS and many vital functions of neurons and glia. Its dysregulation is linked to a number of neurodegenerative diseases. Wnt/β-catenin is also a repressor of HIV transcription in multiple cell types, including astrocytes, which are dysregulated in HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder. Given that HIV proteins can overcome host restriction factors and that perturbations of Wnt/β-catenin signaling can compromise astrocyte function, we evaluated the impact of HIV transactivator of transcription (Tat) on Wnt/β-caten

Role of mu-opioids as cofactors in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 disease progression and neuropathogenesis.

About one third of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome cases in the USA have been attributed to the use of injected addictive drugs, frequently involving opioids like heroin and morphine, establishing them as significant predisposing risk factors for contracting human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). Accumulating evidence from in vitro and in vivo experimental systems indicates that opioids act in concert with HIV-1 proteins to exacerbate dysregulation of neural and immune cell function and survival through diverse molecular mechanisms. In contrast, the impact of opioid exposure and withd

Lowering the risk of secondary HIV transmission: insights from HIV-positive youth and health care providers.

CONTEXT: Both perinatally and behaviorally infected HIV-positive youth engage in sexually risky behaviors, and a better understanding of the perceptions of these youth and of health care providers regarding disclosure of HIV status and risk reduction would aid in the development of behavioral interventions for such youth. METHODS: In spring 2007, some 20 HIV-positive inner-city youth (aged 13-24) and 15 health care providers who work with HIV-infected youth participated in in-depth, semistructured interviews. Youth were recruited at an HIV clinic, AIDS clinics and an AIDS service organization

Polymorphisms in the CCR5 coding and noncoding regions among HIV type 1-exposed, persistently seronegative female sex-workers from Thailand.

Resistance to HIV-1 infection despite repeated exposures has been associated with one or more HIV-specific responses, enhanced nonspecific immune modifications, and/or host genetic polymorphisms in certain individuals (highly exposed, persistently seronegative, HEPS). In the present investigation, we focused on the CCR5 gene polymorphisms and the association of such mutations to resistance to HIV-1 infection among 12 HEPS women in Chiang Rai, northern Thailand, and compared our findings with data from 10 HIV-1-infected and 9 HIV-1-uninfected unexposed women from the same geographic area. Nocardial brain abscesses in a HIV positive patient misinterpreted as tubercular brain abscesses.

We present a case of nocardial (Nocarda transvalensis) brain abscesses in a HIV infected person with CD4 count of 53 cells/ml, who received antitubercular therapy for one year. A magnetic resonance imaging study showed multiple ring-enhancing lesions in right parieto-occipital parenchymal region along with perilesional edema and mass effect. Right posterior temporal burr hole aspiration of the abscesses and postoperative cotrimoxazole and ampicillin-sulbactum therapy cured the patient. It is a case of HIV infection with rare and sole manifestation of multiple cerebral abscesses due to N. trans

Ganciclovir treatment of cytomegalovirus ventriculitis in a patient infected with human immunodeficiency virus.

Histopathologic evidence of central nervous system involvement with cytomegalovirus (CMV) has been well recognized in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, clinically symptomatic disease has been decidedly less common. In this report, we describe a patient infected with HIV who developed an acute change in neurological status. Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging and analysis of cerebrospinal fluid revealed CMV ventriculitis and meningoencephalitis. Treatment with ganciclovir resulted in radiological improvement of the ventriculitis and negative CMV cult

Thymosin α1-induced secretion of the IL-15/RA complex by THP-1-derived dendritic cells restrains HIV latency in vitro.

Viral reservoir presents a significant challenge in HIV-1 cure. We previously observed that Thymosin α1 (Tα1) may restrict the reservoir through the IL-15 pathway. However, the precise mechanism remains to be fully elucidated. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were obtained from people living with HIV-1 (PLWH). In vitro, THP-1 cells were differentiated into mature monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MoDCs) and co-cultured with PBMCs under various conditions. Intracellular HIV-1 p24 levels, CD8+ T and NK cell functionality, and reservoir size were evaluated. In vitro, Tα1 stimulation of
