Acute esophagogastroduodenal mucosal lesions are the demonstrable adverse events occurred after H. pylori eradication. In our study, acute duodenal erosions were observed in 13.5% of the eradicated patients. Duodenal erosions which occurred mainly at the early phase after eradication were temporal and asymptomatic. Acute gastric erosion showed the same clinical manner. However, it needs to pay attention for rare occurrence of acute ulcers with severe symptoms. On the other hand, mild but persistent reflux esophagitis occurred at relatively late phase after eradication. Their occurrence rates w

AIM: Because the presence or absence of H pylori infection has important implications for therapeutic decisions based on histological assessment, the reproducibility of Sydney system is important. The study was designed to test the reproducibility of features of Helicobacter pylori gastritis, using the updated Sydney classification.
METHODS: Gastric biopsies of 40 randomly selected cases of H pylori gastritis were scored semiquantitatively by three pathologists. Variables analysed included chronic inflammation, inflammatory activity, atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, H pylori, surface epithelia…

The antimicrobial susceptibility test was necessary for the eradication therapy of Helicobacter pylori infections. This is because, clarithromycin resistant strains has became an increasing problem. In this study, we used the antimicrobial susceptibility test which was compare with the agar gradient method, Etest, and broth microdilution method (dry plate) with 4 antimicrobial agents. The results strongly suggested that broth microdilution method was the best method in order to test the antimicrobial susceptibility of H. pylori. On the other hand, 393 H. pylori stains isolated during 1994-1998…

At an individual level Helicobacter pylori was associated with the occurrence of gastric cancer but in some African and Asian countries its prevalence runs with low gastric cancer rates, the so-called African and Asian enigmas. We assessed whether the association between gastric cancer and H. pylori prevalence at an area level is modified by the level of exposure to fruits and vegetables, alcohol or tobacco. Regression models were fitted to data from 58 countries using as dependent variable log transformed gastric cancer rates and as independent covariables the H. pylori prevalence, fruits and…

OBJECTIVE: To establish a stable and reliable model of Helicobacter pylori infection in Mongolian gerbil and to observe pathological changes in gastric mucosa from the infected animals.
METHODS: Mongolian gerbils were randomly divided into six groups infected with H.pylori strain NCTC11637 (n=6, group N), six groups infected with H.pylori clinical strain Y06 (n=6, group Y) and six groups as negative control (n=4, group C). H.pylori suspensions at the concentrations of 2 X 10(8)CFU/ml and 2 X 10(9) CFU/ml of strain NCTC11637 and strain Y06 were prepared with Brucella broth from Columbia agar c…

It is known that Helicobacter pylori is a cause of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease in humans. However the origin and transmission of this bacterium has not been clearly explained. One of the suggested theories is transmission via raw milk from animals to human beings. In this study, the presence of H. pylori was investigated in sheep milk that is commonly consumed as human food. For this purpose, a total of 440 raw sheep milk samples collected from the Burdur region of Turkey were examined by specific cultural procedures, however, H. pylori was not isolated in any sample.

UNLABELLED: Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection is involved in both digestive and extradigestive diseases. Endoscopically, antral location of gastritis, as well as antral nodularity, a consequence of the development of lymphoid follicles in the mucosa of this area, are considered by some authors specific for gastritis in children. Histologically, lymphoid follicles, noticed usually in children, are considered pathognomonic.
AIMS: To establish prevalence of gastritis in children and the correlation between of endoscopical and histological findings.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study group include…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Duodenal ulcers should be treated by eradication of Helicobacter pylori. This study compared the efficacy of a proton pump inhibitor together with one or two antibiotics in eradication therapy.
METHODOLOGY: 177 patients who were H. pylori positive were randomized to receive 14 days of either: lansoprazole 30 mg bd and amoxicillin 1 g bd (LA), omeprazole 20 mg bd and amoxicillin 1 g bd (OA) or lansoprazole 30 mg bd, amoxicillin 1 g bd and clarithromycin 500 mg bd (LAC). The efficacy was assessed at four weeks and at six months after the end of treatment. Biopsies were taken fo…

There are several reasons for eradicating Helicobacter pylori in patients with chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Perhaps the most compelling is the evidence that chronic acid suppression therapy can lead to the development of atrophic gastritis, a premalignant condition, in patients with H pylori infection. Epidemiological data that suggest that H pylori is less prevalent in GERD patients than in control subjects may be susceptible to publication bias, and confounding social and environmental factors may also be involved. Although it has been thought that eradication of the organ…

The aim of this study was to assess the primary and combined resistances of Helicobacter pylori isolates obtained from paediatric patients in 2000-2001 to seven antimicrobial agents. Resistance rates of pre-treatment isolates from 115 children were investigated by the limited agar dilution method alone and by the E-test. The cut-off concentrations for resistance were: metronidazole >8 mg/L, clarithromycin and azithromycin >1 mg/L, clindamycin >4 mg/L, amoxicillin >0.5 mg/L, tetracycline >4 mg/L and ciprofloxacin >1 mg/L. Primary resistance rates were: metronidazole 15.8%, clarithromycin 12.4%,…

The aim of the present study was to establish an animal model for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection at the German Primate Centre in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta). During the experiments the susceptibility of three animals to different H. pylori strains of human origin was tested. In a follow-up study gastric biopsies from three different sites were investigated in regular intervals using microbiological, histological, electron microscopical and molecular biological methods to evaluate the presence of bacterial colonization and the occurrence of gastritis. It was possible to establish…

This study was designed to observe vacuolation effect of Helicobacter pylori on gastric epithelial cells. The H. pylori isolates derived from patients with peptic ulcer, chronic gastritis and gastric cancer were plated on common selective medium and their vacuolation effects on SGC-7901 cells were compared. The percentage of H. pylori(Tox+) strain in clinical isolates from different gastroduodenal diseases had no significant difference. The toxicity of the H. pylori (Tox+) strain from peptic ulcer was significantly higher than that from chronic gasritis.

BACKGROUND: Most patients with chronic peptic ulcer disease have Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. In the past, immediate acid-reduction surgery has been strongly advocated for perforated peptic ulcers because of the high incidence of ulcer relapse after simple closure. Simple oversewing procedures either by an open or laparoscopic approach together with H. pylori eradication appear to supersede definitive ulcer surgery.
METHODS: In 47 consecutive patients (mean age = 64 years, range 27-91) suffering from acute peptic ulcer perforation the preoperative presence of H. pylori (CLO test…

INDICATIONS: Eradication of Helicobacter pylori is needed for patients with a gastroduodenal ulcer associated with H. pylori gastritis. Eradication modifies the natural history of the disease and greatly reduces the risk of recurrence. Eradication is also indicated for patients with MALT lymphoma with a low degree of malignancy. Systematic eradication of H. pylori would not be necessary for patients with dyspepsia associated with H. pylori gastritis since a beneficial effect is achieved in only 5% of the treated patients. Systematic eradication in order to reduce the incidence of gastric adeno…
