Inclusive school practices for all youth: A European Cross-National Study of general, sexual orientation, and gender identity-based bullying.

Bullying based on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI-based bullying) is prevalent across Europe. This study examined the associations among student-level and school-level inclusive school practices and general and SOGI-based bullying across LGBTQ+ students and heterosexual cisgender students. Data were drawn from 13 European countries, with a final analytic sample of n = 6730. Participants had a mean age of 16.37 years (SD = 1.46), and 58% identified as LGBTQ+. Results from multivariate multilevel models indicated that SOGI-inclusive anti-bullying policies at the student level and po

"I'm Trusting You with My Body": A Qualitative Examination of the Role of Trust in Safer Sexual Decision-Making Among Black Women.

Black women are disproportionately impacted by HIV, such that they are diagnosed at eight times the rate of White women and three times that of Latinas. Given that HIV transmission among Black women is primarily attributed to heterosexual sex, it is imperative to better understand factors that influence Black women's sexual health decision-making. Previous studies have highlighted the influence of trust on sexual decision-making; however, scant literature focuses on trust in the relationships of Black women, for whom it may differentially impact their sexual health. Nine focus groups were cond

Is sexual identity associated with the risk of premature ejaculation?

OBJECTIVES: Some studies suggest that homosexual identity, compared to heterosexual, may be associated with a reduced risk of premature ejaculation (PE). The aim of this study was to test this relationship and to investigate possible underlaying mechanisms. METHODS: The present study drew on a database obtained from a cross-sectional online study of the sexuality of Polish heterosexual (HM; N = 1,121), gay (GM; N = 1,789) and bisexual (BM; N = 743) men. The dependent variable was the PE diagnosis based on the PEDT questionnaire. The explanatory variables were characteristics of sexual and par

Relationships between Sexual Orientation, Weight, and Health in a Population-Based Sample of California Women.

BACKGROUND: Most biomedical research has reported associations between weight and physical health problems; little is known about whether those associations vary by sexual identity. METHODS: Pooled data from the 2003 through 2013 waves of the California Health Interview Survey was used to construct logistic regression models to examine whether the associations between weight and four chronic conditions (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and asthma) varied by sexual identity. RESULTS: A total of 97,720 heterosexual and 2,822 lesbian/bisexual women comprised the analytic sample. Th

Homelessness and Sexual Identity Among Middle School Students.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, or questioning (LGBQ) high school students experience higher rates of homelessness than their heterosexual peers. Moreover, LGBQ high school students are more likely to stay in riskier locations (eg, with a stranger) and less likely to stay in a shelter. This study tested whether these trends also apply to middle school students. METHODS: Using representative data, we examined sexual identity and homelessness among Los Angeles Unified School District middle school students. RESULTS: Nearly 10% of middle school students identified as LGBQ and 23.5% experien

Development and initial validation of The Sexual Orientation Beliefs Scale (SOBS).

The purpose of these studies was to develop and validate a measure of beliefs about sexual orientation (SO) that incorporates essentialist, social constructionist, and constructivist themes. The Sexual Orientation Beliefs Scale (SOBS) is offered as a multidimensional instrument with which to assess a broad range of beliefs about SO, which evidence suggests are highly correlated with positive and negative attitudes about sexual minorities. An initial exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted in the general population with a lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender-identified (LGBT) sample

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) physicians' experiences in the workplace.

Little is known about the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) physicians in the workplace. There is little formal education in medical school about LGBT issues, and some heterosexual physicians have negative attitudes about caring for LGBT patients or working with LGBT coworkers, setting the stage for an exclusive and unwelcoming workplace. The current study used an online survey to assess a convenience sample of 427 LGBT physicians from a database of a national LGBT healthcare organization, as well as a snowball sample generated from the members of the database. HIV type 1 infection in women: increased transcription of HIV type 1 in ectocervical tissue explants.

BACKGROUND: Mucosal surfaces of the female reproductive tract are the main routes of heterosexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), but the contribution of each of the reproductive sites to mucosal transmission is unknown. METHODS: We compared levels of HIV-1 transcription between ectocervical and endometrial tissue explants infected ex vivo with HIV-1. RESULTS: We detected higher levels of HIV-1 transcription in the ectocervix. Although CD45 expression was also increased at this site, higher levels of HIV-1 transcription could not be accounted for exclusively by d

Mental health and substance use disorders among Latino and Asian American lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults.

Growing evidence suggests that lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults may be at elevated risk for mental health and substance use disorders, possibly due to anti-gay stigma. Little of this work has examined putative excess morbidity among ethnic/racial minorities resulting from the experience of multiple sources of discrimination. The authors report findings from the National Latino and Asian American Survey (NLAAS), a national household probability psychiatric survey of 4,488 Latino and Asian American adults. Approximately 4.8% of persons interviewed identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or re

Sexual orientation of men with pathological gambling: prevalence and psychiatric comorbidity in a treatment-seeking sample.

Although gay men represent a high-risk group for psychiatric illness and impairment, they are largely an understudied population. The purpose of the present study was to examine the sexual orientation and clinical correlates of men with pathological gambling (PG). Sexual orientation was assessed in 105 men presenting with PG. Gay and bisexual men with PG were compared with heterosexual men in terms of gambling symptoms, impairment, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Of 22 men (21.0%) with PG, 15 were gay (14.3%) and 7 were bisexual (6.7%). Gay and bisexual men vs heterosexual men were mor

Choosing identity-release sperm donors: the parents' perspective 13-18 years later.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of donor insemination (DI) programmes offer 'open-identity' sperm donors, who are willing to have their identity released to adult offspring. We report findings from parents who chose such donors and whose children are now adolescents. METHODS: Using mail-back questionnaires, parents from 45 households (40% headed by lesbian couples, 38% by single women, 22% by heterosexual couples) reported their experience with using an open-identity donor and disclosure about it, as well as their child's plans for donor identity-release(sm). RESULTS: Almost no parents regrette

HIV in the United States at the turn of the century: an epidemic in transition.

OBJECTIVES: The current status of and changes in the HIV epidemic in the United States are described. METHODS: Surveillance data were used to evaluate time trends in AIDS diagnoses and deaths. Estimates of HIV incidence were derived from studies done during the 1990s; time trends in recent HIV incidence were inferred from HIV diagnoses and seroprevalence rates among young persons. RESULTS: Numbers of deaths and AIDS diagnoses decreased dramatically during 1996 and 1997 but stabilized or declined only slightly during 1998 and 1999. Proportional decreases were smallest among African American w

Congenital micropenis: long-term medical, surgical and psychosexual follow-up of individuals raised male or female.

OBJECTIVES: To document long-term medical, surgical and psychosexual outcome of individuals with congenital micropenis (13 males, 5 females). METHODS: Physical measurements from childhood were collected retrospectively from medical records and at adulthood by physical examination. An adult psychosexual assessment was conducted with a written questionnaire and oral discussion. RESULTS: Adult penile length was below the normal mean in all men. Three women had vaginoplasty resulting in normal length. All men reported good or fair erections but 50% were dissatisfied with their genitalia. Dissati

Gender difference in persistent at-risk sexual behavior after a diagnosed sexually transmitted disease. ACSF-Investigators.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There are few data on sexual behavior after an episode of sexually transmitted disease (STD). GOALS: To examine association between a history of STD and subsequent at-risk sexual behavior in the general population. STUDY DESIGN: In the French National Survey of Sexual Behavior, current sexual behavior was compared between heterosexuals who reported an STD in the 4 years prior to the last year and those who reported no STD (n = 2517). RESULTS: Reporting of STD was associated with a high rate of past multiple partnership among both sexes, but was associated with cur

Factors associated with changes in sex behaviour among drug users in Puerto Rico.

Despite available strategies to prevent sex risk behaviours in Puerto Rico, heterosexual transmission of HIV continues to increase. Since 1990, heterosexual contact has been the fastest growing infection risk category among the island's general population, and the primary transmission route for women and children. To understand change in sex risk behaviours and factors related to change, 911 drug injectors and 359 crack smokers were recruited from the San Juan metropolitan area following a stratified cluster design. This study comprised a total of 1,004 (79.1%) drug users who were assessed at

An evaluation of the polymerase chain reaction in HIV-1 seronegative men.

The apparent detection of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) DNA by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in seronegative individuals has been the subject of great concern. In this study, 324 seronegative participants in the San Francisco Men's Health Study were evaluated for evidence of infection using a PCR testing algorithm with multiple amplifications targeting different regions of the HIV-1 genome. While most PCR reactions were negative, 8.6% of the specimens showed weak reactivity with one or more primer sets. However, all were negative with at least one primer set and no definitively po

Sexual orientation, gender identity and virologic failure among people with HIV: a cohort study in all of US research program.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) are at higher risk of HIV incidence compared to their heterosexual cisgender counterparts. Despite the high HIV disease burden among SGMs, there was limited data on whether they are at higher risk of virologic failure, which may lead to potential disease progression and increased transmission risk. The All of Us (AoU) Research Program, a national community-engaged program aiming to improve health and facilitate health equity in the United States by partnering with one million participants, provides a promising resource for identifying a diverse a

Effects of Bullying on Anxiety, Depression, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Sexual Minority Youths: Network Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bullying victimization is highly prevalent among sexual minority youths, particularly in educational settings, negatively affecting their mental health. However, previous studies have scarcely explored the symptomatic relationships among anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among sexual minority youths who experienced bullying on college campuses. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of our study were to (1) characterize the anxiety-depression-PTSD network structures of gay or lesbian, bisexuals, and other sexual minority youths previously bullied on college campuses

Quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccination and trends in genital warts in Australia: analysis of national sentinel surveillance data.

BACKGROUND: Quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has high efficacy in clinical trials but no reports describe its effects at a population level. From July, 2007, Australia was the first country to fund a vaccination programme for all women aged 12-26 years. We established a national surveillance network in Australia and aimed to identify trends in diagnoses of genital warts in 2004-09. METHODS: We obtained standardised data for demographic factors, frequency of genital warts, HPV vaccination status, and sexual behaviour for new patients attending eight sexual health services in Aus
