Real-Time and Precise 3-D Lesion Reconstruction With Boundary Point Clouds for Robotic Ultrasound Scanning.

In robot-assisted breast ultrasound scanning, conventional 2-D imaging often fails to fully capture the spatial morphology of lesions, limiting clinicians' ability to obtain intuitive structural information. In addition, variations in patient body type and examination posture lead to significant scanning range fluctuations. Conventional voxel-based 3-D reconstruction methods rely heavily on pre-defined voxel grid size and position but inappropriate settings can adversely affect lesion feature data acquisition and computation, potentially resulting in inaccurate 3-D lesion reconstruction. Detection of small pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: The potential of cinematic rendering in earlier lesion detection.

Small pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDACs) generally have a more favorable prognosis; however, up to 40 % may be missed on CT scan. Cinematic rendering (CR) is a novel three-dimensional post-processing technique that accentuates subtle textural differences and holds the potential to improve detection of small tumors. It utilizes a complex global lighting model generating photorealistic images with enhanced visualization of shadows and texture based on volumetric scalar fields (Hounsfield units). While CR has been studied for pre-surgical planning and vascular anatomy assessment, its role

Artificial intelligence-based models for quantification of intra-pancreatic fat deposition and their clinical relevance: a systematic review of imaging studies.

High intra-pancreatic fat deposition (IPFD) plays an important role in diseases of the pancreas. The intricate anatomy of the pancreas and the surrounding structures has historically made IPFD quantification a challenging measurement to make accurately on radiological images. To take on the challenge, automated IPFD quantification methods using artificial intelligence (AI) have recently been deployed. The aim was to benchmark the current knowledge on the use of AI-based models to measure IPFD automatedly. The search was conducted in the MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and IEEE Xplore databases. Studi

Convolutional neural network in nasopharyngeal carcinoma: how good is automatic delineation for primary tumor on a non-contrast-enhanced fat-suppressed T2-weighted MRI?

PURPOSE: Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) show potential for delineating cancers on contrast-enhanced MRI (ce-MRI) but there are clinical scenarios in which administration of contrast is not desirable. We investigated performance of the CNN for delineating primary nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) on non-contrast-enhanced images and compared the performance to that on ce-MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed primary NPC in 195 patients using a well-established CNN, U-Net, for tumor delineation on the non-contrast-enhanced fat-suppressed (fs)-T2W, ce-T1W and ce-fs-T1W images

Computer-aided modelling of three-dimensional maxillofacial tissues through multi-modal imaging.

Recent developments in digital imaging techniques have allowed a wide spread of three-dimensional methodologies based on capturing anatomical tissues by different approaches, such as cone-beam computed tomography, three-dimensional photography and surface scanning. In oral rehabilitation, an objective method to predict surgical and orthodontic outcomes should be based on anatomical data belonging to soft facial tissue, facial skeleton and dentition (maxillofacial triad). However, none of the available imaging techniques can accurately capture the complete triad. This article presents a multi-m

Correlation of phase values with CT Hounsfield and R2* values in calcified neurocysticercosis.

PURPOSE: To correlate phase and R2* derived from susceptibility-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with computed tomography-Hounsfield (CT-HU) values in calcified neurocysticercosis and to evaluate phase imaging in the assessment of calcified neurocysticercosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five patients with 52 calcified lesions underwent both CT and MRI. Phase and R2* were calculated from multi-echo 3D-T2-star-weighted-angiography data. MRI and CT data were coregistered using mutual information. Spearman's correlation was performed between quantitative phase and CT-HU and R2* values

Personalization of cubic Hermite meshes for efficient biomechanical simulations.

Cubic Hermite meshes provide an efficient representation of anatomy, and are useful for simulating soft tissue mechanics. However, their personalization can be a complex, time consuming and labour-intensive process. This paper presents a method based on image registration and using an existing template for deriving a patient-specific cubic Hermite mesh. Its key contribution is a solution to customise a Hermite continuous description of a shape with the use of a discrete warping field. Fitting accuracy is first tested and quantified against an analytical ground truth solution. To then demonstra

Voxel-based cortical thickness measurements in MRI.

The thickness of the cerebral cortex can provide valuable information about normal and abnormal neuroanatomy. High resolution MRI together with powerful image processing techniques has made it possible to perform these measurements automatically over the whole brain. Here we present a method for automatically generating voxel-based cortical thickness (VBCT) maps. This technique results in maps where each voxel in the grey matter is assigned a thickness value. Sub-voxel measurements of thickness are possible using sub-sampling and interpolation of the image information. The method is applied to

Right ventricular parameters: prospect for routine assessment by equilibrium radionuclide angiographic SPECT.

While left ventricular (LV) function is assessed routinely for heart disease, right ventricular (RV) assessment has attracted relatively little attention due to technical difficulties, even though RV function plays an important role in determining prognosis. This issue of the Communications includes a report that a SPECT ERNA algorithm applied to data for patients with tetralogy of Fallot exhibited RV dysfunction compared to normal subjects, as reported previously using different ERNA SPECT algorithms. That ERNA SPECT methods appear to produce results that are expected of patient group who sho

Detection of a double right coronary artery with 16-row multidetector computed tomography.

We present the case of a 46-year-old male patient with known history of coronary artery disease and recurrent episodes of angina pectoris. Coronary angiography revealed two vessels originating from the right coronary sinus. However, a clear distinction between a double RCA and a high take off of a large right ventricular branch could not be made. Contrast-enhanced MDCT was performed on a 16-row scanner which clearly depicted cardiac anatomy and finally established the diagnosis of a double RCA. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a true double RCA diagnosed by MDCT.

Improving Agar Plate Image Quality Using a Low-Cost 3D-Printed Lightbox: A Proof-of-Concept Evaluation for Machine Learning-Assisted Analysis.

Agar plate photography is widely used to document microbial growth, but images captured under routine laboratory lighting are often affected by glare, reflections, shadows, and uneven illumination, which may compromise both visual interpretation and computational analysis. This proof-of-concept study developed and evaluated a low-cost, three-dimensional (3D)-printed lightbox for standardized smartphone-based agar plate imaging. Image characteristics were assessed across five uncultured agar media under traditional and lightbox conditions using Fiji/ImageJ. Machine learning-assisted analysis wa

[Navigated osteosynthesis of the proximal femur. An experimental study].

Screw position in femoral head has been considered the most important predictive factor for mechanical failure in pertrochanteric osteosynthesis, and correct positioning is assisted by fluoroscopic control. Although fluoroscopy leads to precise and reproducible results, it is associated with scattered radiation to the patient and surgical staff. Computer-assisted surgery (CAS) may be an alternative in means of achieving precise screw insertion with a low radiation dose. We designed a laboratory study in which artificial proximal femora were submitted to insertions of a dynamic hip screw (DHS)

Comparison between fast-interrupted steady-state (FISS) and rapid water-excitation pulses for fat signal suppression in free-running whole-heart MRI at 1.5 T.

BACKGROUND: Free-running whole-heart MRI using balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) sequences offer high SNR and myocardial tissue contrast. However, an inadequate fat signal suppression may introduce artifacts and is particularly challenging with non-Cartesian readouts. The aim of this study was to evaluate different fat-signal suppression methods for whole-heart free-running MRI at 1.5 T using numerical simulations, phantom, and cardiac MRI experiments without the use of contrast agents. METHODS: Binomial off-resonant rectangular (BORR), lipid insensitive binomial off-resonant RF e

Development of an expert system as a diagnostic support of cervical cancer in atypical glandular cells, based on fuzzy logics and image interpretation.

Cervical cancer is the second largest cause of death among women worldwide. Nowadays, this disease is preventable and curable at low cost and low risk when an accurate diagnosis is done in due time, since it is the neoplasm with the highest prevention potential. This work describes the development of an expert system able to provide a diagnosis to cervical neoplasia (CN) precursor injuries through the integration of fuzzy logics and image interpretation techniques. The key contribution of this research focuses on atypical cases, specifically on atypical glandular cells (AGC). The expert system

Impact of Artificial Intelligence Assistance on Diagnosing Traumatic Pneumothorax: A Comparison of Specialist and Non-Specialist Emergency Physicians.

INTRODUCTION: Supine chest radiography is routinely used in trauma care; however, its sensitivity is limited in pneumothorax detection. Although artificial intelligence (AI) has recently been introduced as a diagnostic support tool for chest radiograph interpretation, its use in trauma radiographs and its interaction with physician experience remain unclear. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of AI-assisted image interpretation in traumatic pneumothorax detection among emergency medicine specialists and non-specialists. METHODS: In this retrospective single-center study, 34 supin
