Increased Risk of Smoking in Female Adolescents Who Had Childhood ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effects of childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity, on the development of smoking in male and female adolescents. METHOD: Twin difference methods were used to control for shared genetic and environmental confounders in three population-based, same-sex twin samples (N=3,762; 64% monozygotic). One cohort oversampled female adolescents with ADHD beginning in childhood. Regressions of childhood inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms were conducted to predict smoking outcomes by ag

Cortisol rise following awakening among problem gamblers: dissociation from comorbid symptoms of depression and impulsivity.

Gambling pathology has been associated with elevated levels of distress, depression and impulsivity. The present investigation assessed whether these behavioral features would be evident among problem gamblers as they are among pathological gamblers. As well, given that gambling has been associated with increased life stress, as an objective index of ongoing distress, elevations of morning cortisol levels were assessed in problem and pathological gamblers relative to recreational gamblers, and their relations to depressive symptoms and impulsivity were assessed. Recreational, problem, and path

The influence of dopamine autoreceptors on temperament and addiction risk.

As a major regulator of dopamine (DA), DA autoreceptors (DAARs) exert substantial influence over DA-mediated behaviors. This paper reviews the physiological and behavioral impact of DAARs. Individual differences in DAAR functioning influences temperamental traits such as novelty responsivity and impulsivity, both of which are associated with vulnerability to addictive behavior in animal models and a broad array of externalizing behaviors in humans. DAARs additionally impact the response to psychostimulants and other drugs of abuse. Human PET studies of D2-like receptors in the midbrain provide

Molecular Imaging of Addictive Behavior in Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is commonly associated with motor symptoms, however cognitive and neurobehavioral complications are increasingly recognized and contribute to long-term disability. Dopamine replacement therapy is effective for motor symptoms, but can also lead to motor side-effects and addictive behavior such as impulse control disorders. Molecular imaging is advancing our knowledge of the mechanisms involved in the development of behavioral addictions. This chapter will discuss potential risk factors and associations with the development of addictive behavior in PD including the role

Callous-unemotional behaviors in young girls: shared and unique effects relative to conduct problems.

Among girls, little is known about the shared and unique associations that callous-unemotional (CU) behaviors and conduct problems have with aspects of emotional and behavioral dysregulation and with parenting practices. This study examined these associations using a large community-based sample of young girls (N = 990). The findings revealed that hyperactivity-impulsivity and negative emotionality were positively and uniquely associated with conduct problems, but not with CU behaviors, after controlling for co-occurring conduct problems. Conduct problems were also positively associated with b

Non-suicidal Self-injury in Different Eating Disorder Types: Relevance of Personality Traits and Gender.

The study explored lifetime prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in female and male individuals with eating disorders (ED) and compared ED symptoms, general psychopathology and personality traits across individuals with and without a history of NSSI. The incremental discriminative capacity of gender on the manifestation of lifetime NSSI was also studied. A total sample of 1649 consecutively admitted ED patients (1515 women and 134 men) participated in the current study [339 ED + NSSI (ED with NSSI) and 1310 ED - NSSI (ED without NSSI)]. Specific self-report measures were included and

Directionality of causal association between adolescent mental health and attention deficit: an empirical analysis using a hybrid network model.

OBJECTIVE: By constructing undirected and Bayesian network models, this study overcomes the limitations of traditional correlation analyses, revealing the underlying causal relationships and operational mechanisms between adolescent mental health and attention deficits. METHODS: A total of 19,157 valid responses (effective response rate: 96.92%) were collected from adolescents aged 11-20 (<0.1% aged 20) at secondary schools in a Hebei Province region via the Wenjuanxing platform. Mental health (10 dimensions) and attention problems (3 dimensions) were assessed using the Mental Health Scale fo

Unveiling the Burden of Drug-Induced Impulsivity: A Network Analysis of the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System.

INTRODUCTION: Impulsivity induced by dopaminergic agents, like pramipexole and aripiprazole, can lead to behavioral addictions that impact on social functioning and quality of life of patients and families (e.g., resulting in unemployment, marital problems, anxiety). These secondary effects, interconnected in networks of signs and symptoms, are usually overlooked by clinical trials, not reported in package inserts, and neglected in clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the syndromic burden of impulsivity induced by pramipexole and aripiprazole, pinpointing key symptoms for targete

Impulsiveness, suicide, and aggression in a sample of patients with disorders of methyl amphetamine use.

BACKGROUND: Research has showed a link between patients with methamphetamine dependence and the risk of impulsiveness, aggression, and the risk of suicide. But, this link has not been studied in patients abusing methamphetamine, and it is unknown how impulsiveness, aggression, and the risk of suicide affect them. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 130 adult patients diagnosed with the disorder of the use of amphetamine, methamphetamine, cannabinoids, alcohol, other substances, and polysubstance admitted in the Addiction Department for Mental Health. Brain structural abnormalities and trait impulsivity in suicidal and non-suicidal patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a characteristic of patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and may result in a higher risk of suicide attempt (SA). Although brain structural abnormalities have been suggested in the pathophysiology of BD, the relationship to impulsivity and suicide in BD is still not clear. METHODS: 52 euthymic patients with BD (26 of them had a history of SA) and 56 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited. All participants received clinical assessment, including Barratt impulsiveness scale (BIS), and underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging examination. An automat

Clinical and Clinical-Pharmacogenetic Models for Prediction of the Most Common Psychiatric Complications Due to Dopaminergic Treatment in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: The most common psychiatric complications due to dopaminergic treatment in Parkinson's disease are visual hallucinations and impulse control disorders. Their development depends on clinical and genetic factors. METHODS: We evaluated the simultaneous effect of 16 clinical and 34 genetic variables on the occurrence of visual hallucinations and impulse control disorders. Altogether, 214 Parkinson's disease patients were enrolled. Their demographic, clinical, and genotype data were obtained. Clinical and clinical-pharmacogenetic models were built by The Least Absolute Shrinkage and Se

Drinking histories in alcohol-use-disordered youth: preliminary findings on relationships to platelet serotonin transporter expression with genotypes of the serotonin transporter.

OBJECTIVE: The serotonin (5-HT) transporter (5-HTT) is thought to play a key role in the onset of alcohol use, with potential behavioral and biological mechanisms mediated by the level of 5-HT in the synapse and in cerebral spinal fluid. Although 5-HT dysregulation has been related to poor impulse control, the biological mechanism is unknown, although functional control of the serotonergic system has been shown to be regulated in part by differential expression of the 5-HTT. The gene responsible for encoding 5-HTT has a functional polymorphism at the 5'-regulatory promoter region, which result

The Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) differentiates smokers and nonsmokers.

In trying to better understand why individuals begin and continue to smoke despite the obvious health consequences, researchers have become interested in identifying relevant personality variables, such as risk taking. In this study, the authors compared the ability of 2 behavioral measures of risk taking, the Bechara Gambling Task (BGT) and the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), to differentiate smokers and nonsmokers. Self-report measures of impulsivity and sensation seeking were taken for comparison with the 2 behavioral risk-taking tasks. Results indicate that behavior on the BART, and not

The Effectiveness of Lurasidone Add-On for Residual Aggressive Behavior and Obsessive Symptoms in Antipsychotic-Treated Children and Adolescents with Tourette Syndrome: Preliminary Evidence from a Case Series.

Children and adolescents with Tourette syndrome may suffer from comorbid psychological and behavioral difficulties, primarily Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder-related manifestations including impulsive, aggressive, and disruptive behavior, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder-related disturbances. Often, such additional problems represent the major cause of disability, requiring their prioritization above the tic symptomatology. Here, we present six cases of children and adolescents with treatment-resistant Tourette syndrome aged 11-17 years, whose symptoms, especially the non-tic symptom
