Substance use and variation in sexual partnership rates among young MSM and young transgender women: Disaggregating between and within-person associations.

BACKGROUND: Substance use has been extensively linked to sexual behavior and HIV/STI risk among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TW). However, the impact of specific substances and on specific partnership types is not well characterized. The current study seeks to estimate the association between specific substances and partnership rates while carefully disaggregating between and within-person associations to characterize the nature of these associations and inform prevention interventions. METHODS: Using data from a longitudinal cohort (n = 1159) of young MSM (YMSM) and

Patients' Perceptions at Diagnosis: Lung Cancer Discovery and Provider Relationships.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, most lung cancer cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, limiting treatment options and impacting survival. This study presents patients' perspectives on the complexity of factors influencing a lung cancer diagnosis. Lung cancer awareness regarding risks, symptoms, smoking behaviors, family history, and environmental factors can lead to preventative and early detection measures. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore lung cancer patient perspectives on lung cancer awareness within the context of an earlier study to understand sleep-wake disturbances

'I feel hopeless': Exploring the psychosocial impacts of caring for mentally ill relatives in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: There is growing recognition of the psychosocial burden of caregiving on relative caregivers of the mentally ill in low-and middle-income countries. Yet there remains limited formal research examining the challenges and psychosocial support needs of these relative caregivers, particularly with sensitivity to understanding caregiver experiences across diverse cultures and contexts. The purpose of this study was to study caregiver burden to inform potential intervention approaches among relative caregivers of treatment-engaged mentally ill patients in Cambodia. METHODS: Participants

Male gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) concentration-dependent social responses to diluted mental gland pheromones.

In complex terrestrial environments, chemical signals can be the most important sensory modality for locating conspecifics for potential mating opportunities, especially in spatially segregated populations or habitats. Organisms must evolve chemical signals to maximize the efficacy of conveying information, particularly in creating trails or mate-choice cues. Long-distance transmission of chemical signals may be an increasingly important management concern for small and fractured populations or potentially threatened species, such as gopher tortoises in the southeastern U.S. Mental gland secre

Augmenting an online self-directed intervention for gambling disorder with a single motivational interview: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite the success of gold standard cognitive-behavioral therapy for problem and disordered gambling, the majority of individuals with gambling problems do not seek or receive professional treatment. Thus, the development of less intrusive self-directed interventions has been encouraged. Bibliotherapy for problem gambling has shown promise, both alone and in combination with motivational interviews, but there is still a lack of online self-directed intervention research. The current randomized controlled trial proposes to assess the additive benefit of a single digital motivationa

Diagnostic experience reported by caregivers of patients with frontotemporal degeneration.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the experience of obtaining a diagnosis of frontotemporal degeneration (FTD) for patients and caregivers. METHODS: Data came from a 2017 web-based survey of 698 FTD caregivers. Clinical characteristics and diagnostic experiences were described according to the phenotype of the patient with FTD (behavioral variant FTD, primary progressive aphasia, FTD with motor neuron disease, or progressive supranuclear palsy/corticobasal syndrome). Unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression analyses determined associations between patient with FTD and caregiver characteristics and (1

Clinical Feasibility of Combining Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation with Standard Aphasia Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a safe, portable, and inexpensive form of noninvasive brain stimulation that appears to augment the effects of concurrent therapy. However, several methodological issues in existing studies distance tDCS from current clinical practice. In this study, we offered (and administered) tDCS to individuals seeking typical behavioral aphasia therapy on an outpatient basis. METHODS: We approached clients (n = 10) planning to receive standard aphasia therapy at a university clinic. Following a brief description of tDCS, we offered to provide

Disrupted salience network dynamics in Parkinson's disease patients with impulse control disorders.

BACKGROUND: Dynamic functional network analysis may add relevant information about the temporal nature of the neurocognitive alterations in PD patients with impulse control disorders (PD-ICD). Our aim was to investigate changes in dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) in PD-ICD patients, and topological properties of such networks. METHODS: Resting state fMRI was performed on 16 PD PD-ICD patients, 20 PD patients without ICD and 17 healthy controls, whose demographic, clinical and behavioral scores were assessed. We conducted a group spatial independent component analysis, sliding wi

"A secret club": focus groups about women's toileting behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Understanding reasons for and impact of women's toileting behaviors on bladder health is important to prevent and manage urinary incontinence (UI) and overactive bladder (OAB). METHODS: Women, regardless of urinary incontinence (UI) and overactive bladder (OAB) status, were recruited in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Focus groups were conducted by trained female moderators and sessions were audiotaped. Participants completed an anonymous questionnaire containing validated items to determine the presence of UI and OAB. Audiotapes were transcribed and content was analyzed by two i

A systematic review of treatments for problem gambling.

Gambling problems impact 0.2%-4.0% of the population, and research related to treating gambling has burgeoned in the last decades. This article reviews trials for psychosocial treatments of gambling problems. Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Standards, we identified 21 randomized trials. Eleven studies evaluated interventions delivered via multisession, in-person therapy: cognitive therapies, cognitive-behavioral (CB) therapies, and motivational interventions (MI) alone or with CB therapies. An additional 10 studies used approaches that involved 1 or few

HIV-1 Tat-Mediated Calcium Dysregulation and Neuronal Dysfunction in Vulnerable Brain Regions.

Despite the success of combined antiretroviral therapy, more than half of HIV-1-infected patients in the USA show HIV-associated neurological and neuropsychiatric deficits. This is accompanied by anatomical and functional alterations in vulnerable brain regions of the mesocorticolimbic and nigrostriatal systems that regulate cognition, mood and motivation-driven behaviors, and could occur at early stages of infection. Neurons are not infected by HIV, but HIV-1 proteins (including but not limited to the HIV-1 trans-activator of transcription, Tat) induce Ca(2+) dysregulation, indicated by abnor

Relationship Dynamics and Sexual Risk Reduction Strategies Among Heterosexual Young Adults: A Qualitative Study of Sexually Transmitted Infection Clinic Attendees at an Urban Chicago Health Center.

Few studies have examined risk-reduction alternatives to consistent condom use for HIV prevention among heterosexual young adults. We used qualitative methodology to explore risk reduction strategies and contextual factors influencing attempts to reduce risk in an urban, high morbidity sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinic. Focus groups were conducted October-December 2014 with heterosexually identified men (n = 13) and women (n = 20) aged 18-29 seeking STI screening at an urban clinic. Groups were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed for thematic content using Atlas.ti sof

What differentiates method stoppers from switchers? Contraceptive discontinuation and switching among Honduran women.

CONTEXT: Contraceptive discontinuation contributes to unplanned pregnancy and unwanted births, as well as increased maternal, neonatal and infant morbidity and mortality. Information on differences between women who stop using contraceptives and those who switch to another method would be useful for programs aimed at preventing unplanned pregnancies and their consequences. METHODS: Data come from two rounds of interviews with women aged 15-44 (800 interviewed at baseline and 671 reinterviewed one year later) who were new or continuing users of injectable or oral contraceptives or an IUD. Biva

Perceived risk of chlamydial and gonococcal infection among sexually experienced young adults in the United States.

CONTEXT: Understanding young adults' perceived risk of chlamydial and gonococcal infection can inform interventions to reduce the prevalence of these sexually transmitted diseases. METHODS: Bivariate and multivariate analyses, using data from Wave 3 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (2001-2002), were conducted to examine relationships between perceived risk and selected characteristics in two groups: a nationally representative sample of sexually experienced 18-26-year-olds and a subsample of those who tested positive for chlamydia or gonorrhea. The relationship between

Social determinants of access to reproductive health services among Afghan migrant women in Iran: A qualitative study.

Migrant women, particularly those from low-resource settings, often face restricted access to reproductive health services in host countries due to intersecting social, economic, and structural barriers. This study explored these barriers among Afghan migrant women in Iran using the World Health Organization's Social Determinants of Health (SDH) model. This qualitative study employed semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 20 purposively sampled Afghan migrant women of reproductive age and 10 key informants from healthcare, midwifery, NGO, and policy backgrounds. Maximum variation sampling w

Podcast Listening, Perceived Social Presence, Perceived Social Support, and Subjective Well-Being Among Chinese Young Adults: Sequential Explanatory Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Podcasts have emerged as a prominent audio medium in the everyday lives of young adults. Despite their growing popularity, the relationship between podcast listening and subjective well-being, along with the psychological mechanisms underlying this association, remains underexplored. This study investigates the relationship between podcast listening and subjective well-being among Chinese young adults and examines the serial mediating effects of perceived social presence and perceived social support. In doing so, it seeks to clarify how immediate media-related experiences are trans

International consensus recommendations for the identification and treatment of tuberous sclerosis complex-associated neuropsychiatric disorders (TAND).

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is associated with a wide range of physical manifestations for which international clinical recommendations for diagnosis and management have been established. TSC is, however, also associated with a wide range of TSC-Associated Neuropsychiatric Disorders (TAND) that are typically under-identified and under-treated yet associated with a profound burden of disease. The contemporary evidence base for the identification and treatment of TAND is much more limited and, to date, consensus recommendations for the diagnosis and management of TAND have also

Understanding the risk perception of visceral leishmaniasis exposure and the acceptability of sandfly protection measures among migrant workers in the lowlands of Northwest Ethiopia: a health belief model perspective.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is the leading cause of health concerns among Ethiopian migrant workers. Understanding risk perception and health-protective behavior are significant challenges in the prevention and eradication of the disease. As a result, studies are required to assess these important epidemiological factors, which will provide guidance on how to assist migrant workers in taking preventive measures against VL. METHOD: We conducted qualitative research among migrant workers on seasonal agricultural farms in Northwest Ethiopia between June and November 2019 to assess th
