The Warble Fly Orders.

The provisions and the operational aspects of the new Warble Fly Orders are described. The new Orders will apply between March 15 and July 31 and during this period owners of cattle showing visible or palpable signs of warbles must treat them with a systemic warble fly dressing. During this period no infested cattle may be moved, even to a slaughterhouse, unless they have been treated and are accompanied by a statutory declaration of treatment.

Characterization and utilization of microsatellite loci in the New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax.

New World screwworm populations in North and Central America have been the targets of virtually continuous eradication attempts by sterile insect technique (SIT) since the 1950s. Nevertheless, in some areas, such as Jamaica, SIT control programmes have failed. Reasons for the failure of SIT-based control programmes in some locations are unknown, but it has been hypothesized that failure may be related to mating incompatibility between sterile and wild fly populations or to the existence of sexually incompatible cryptic species. This paper outlines the development of a suite of four new microsa

The complete mitochondrial genome of Reptalus artemisiae (Becker, 1865) (Hemiptera: Cixiidae).

Reptalus artemisiae (Becker, 1865) is a vector of economically important plant pathogens. To date, no complete mitochondrial genome has been available for Pentastirini. We present the first complete mitogenome of R. artemisiae, sequenced using ONT MinION long reads. The circular genome is 15,476 bp long, comprises 13 protein-coding, two rRNA, 22 tRNA genes, and an AT-rich putative noncoding control region. Gene content and organization are consistent with the ancestral insect mitochondrial genome. This dataset provides a crucial reference for phylogenetic studies for both Reptalus and Pentasti

What's eating you? human flea (Pulex irritans).

The human flea, Pulex irritans, is an important vector in the transmission of human diseases. This flea has been identified as a vector for the bubonic plague as far back as the 14th century, causing millions of deaths. Pulex irritans also has been identified as a vector for Bartonella bacteria species, which can cause trench fever. Rickettsia species, which can cause Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Mediterranean spotted fever, also have been identified in P irritans. Flea bites present as intensely pruritic papules and can be treated with topical antipruritics and corticosteroids. The most e

[The occurence of a plague epidemic at Sidi Abdallah-Ferryville in 1944-1945].

Account of a plague epidemic in the tunisian maritime area of Bizerte - Ferryville - Sidi Abdallah, between August 1944 and March 1945, the strategic period of the landing forces in the South of France. 37 patients were treated at the Maritime Hospital of Sidi Abdallah. 27 died. The treatment was 8 to 10 g. of sulfadizine/day. Control measures: vaccination of entire population of the area, with E.V. vaccine or with heated vaccine. Vaccinees = 29 908. Intensification of rat and insect-arthropods eradication. We observed only one secondary pulmonary form. During this epidemic, we had the opportu

Novel but stable endosymbionts have contrasting effects on aphid dispersal and plant feeding damage in the cereal pest Diuraphis noxia.

Endosymbiotic bacteria can affect many ecological attributes of their insect hosts, including (in herbivorous insects) how they interact with plants where they feed. This raises the issue of whether deliberate endosymbiont introductions could be used to decrease crop damage caused by insect pests. Here, we investigate how transinfecting Rickettsiella viridis and Regiella insecticola endosymbionts into a novel pest aphid host, the Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia), influences population growth, alate production, dispersal ability, and crop damage. Both the Rickettsiella (originating from pe

Mode of toxicity of the β-triketone leptospermone to Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

Leptospermone, a natural β-triketone and major constituent of manuka oil (Leptospermum scoparium), is an established inhibitor of plant HPPD and was identified to induce rapid knockdown and induce high toxicity to Aedes aegypti adults via topical and tarsal contact exposure with LD50 values of 150 ng/mg of mosquito and 357 ng/cm2, respectively. Although toxic to mosquitoes, leptospermone was non-toxic to ticks, the honey bee, or the fruit fly indicating a high degree of insect specificity. Importantly, leptospermone was equally toxic to non-blood fed and blood-fed mosquitoes suggesting the mod

Overexpression of miR-927-5p suppresses stalky expression and negatively reduces the spermatid production in Zeugodacus cucurbitae.

BACKGROUND: The melon fly, Zeugodacus cucurbitae Coquillett, is one of the major pests attacking Cucurbitaceae crops. Identifying critical genes or proteins regulating fertility is essential for sustainable pest control and a research hotspot in insect physiology. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short RNAs that do not directly participate in protein translation, but instead function in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression involved in male fertility. RESULTS: We found that miR-927-5p is highly expressed in the testes and investigated its function in spermatogenesis in Z. cucurbitae. Fluor

Consequences of larval competition and exposure to permethrin for the development of the rodent malaria Plasmodium berghei in the mosquito Anopheles gambiae.

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes and other vectors are often exposed to sublethal doses of insecticides. Larvae can be exposed to the run-off of agricultural use, and adults can be irritated by insecticides used against them and move away before they have picked up a lethal dose. This sublethal exposure may affect the success of control of insect-borne diseases, for it may affect the competence of insects to transmit parasites, in particular if the insects are undernourished. METHODS: We assessed how exposure of larvae and adults to a sublethal dose of permethrin (a pyrethroid) and how larval competiti

Effects of water turbidity and different temperatures on oxidative stress in caddisfly (Stenopsyche marmorata) larvae.

Anthropogenic water turbidity derived from suspended solids (SS) is caused by reservoir sediment management practices such as drawdown flushing. Turbid water induces stress in many aquatic organisms, but the effects of turbidity on oxidative stress responses in aquatic insects have not yet been demonstrated. Here, we examined antioxidant responses, oxidative damage, and energy reserves in caddisfly (Stenopsyche marmorata) larvae exposed to turbid water (0 mg SS L-1, 500 mg SS L-1, and 2000 mg SS L-1) at different temperatures. We evaluated the combined effects of turbid water and temperature b

Pediatric skin disease in Pakistan. A study of three Punjab villages.

The population of children younger than 5 years old in three widely distributed villages in Punjab, Pakistan, was examined for skin disease in November 1980. Approximately 29% of the children had infectious skin disease, with pyoderma the predominant diagnostic category. There were significant differences in pyoderma prevalence rates between villages, with the suppressive effect of malathion spraying for malaria control on the insect population representing the most likely explanation for the observed differences. These data again emphasize the amount of skin disease, particularly in children,

Insect lipids as novel food ingredients: Linking molecular structure and quality attributes to food applications and industrial translation.

Processing of edible insects generates compositionally diverse lipid fractions, but food-ingredient development is constrained by variable quality and limited understanding of how molecular structure determines product performance. Previous reviews have emphasized fatty acid composition, extraction, and direct food use, while offering limited guidance on selecting or modifying oils for specific applications. This review addresses that gap through a structure-property-application framework linking fatty acid, triacylglycerol architecture, minor constituents, and production history with quality,

Laboratory Colonization of Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) marajoara (Diptera: Culicidae) by Induced Copulation.

Malaria is a serious public health problem, the control of which involves actions directed against its vector, mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles Meigan, 1818. The study of insect biology, ecology, and behavior is simplified when these insects are maintained at the laboratory. However, many of the species are eurygamic and require induced mating. Females of Anopheles marajoara Galvão e Damasceno, 1942 were collected at Mazagão county, State of Amapá, Brazil. F1 eggs were obtained through forced oviposition and raised until mosquito emergence. Around 300 mosquitoes were maintained in each cage a

The behavioural effects of predator-induced stress responses in the cricket (Gryllus texensis): the upside of the stress response.

Predator-induced stress responses are thought to reduce an animal's risk of being eaten. Therefore, these stress responses should enhance anti-predator behaviour. We found that individual insects (the cricket Gryllus texensis) show reliable behavioural responses (i.e. behavioural types) in a plus-shaped maze. An individual's behaviour in the plus maze remained consistent for at least 1/2 of its adult life. However, after exposure to a model predator, both male and female crickets showed a reduced period of immobility and an increased amount of time spent under shelter compared with controls. T

Circadian rhythms of melatonin-synthesizing enzyme activities and melatonin levels in planarians.

In most vertebrates and several insects, melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is synthesized enzymatically from serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) by the sequential action of arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (NAT) and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT). In the freshwater planarian Dugesia japonica, which belongs to the most primitive metazoan phylum, activities of NAT and HIOMT, as well as melatonin, were found. The apparent Michaelis constants for substrates of NAT and HIOMT in the planarian were similar to those reported for the mammalian pineal gland and retina. When the planarian

Laboratory studies of susceptibility and resistance to insecticides in Pediculus capitis (Anoplura; Pediculidae).

The susceptibility of local head lice to permethrin, sumithrin, deltamethrin, and carbaryl was determined by laboratory bioassays in field-collected colonies. Head lice collected from the infested heads of children 6-12 yr old were tested within 3 h of collection. The longest survival of control insects in the laboratory was obtained by keeping them in the dark at 18 degrees C and 70-80% RH. The base line susceptibility data obtained for insects collected from children not treated for lice, the reference colony, showed that deltamethrin caused the highest mortality of the insecticides tested (

Odorant-binding proteins and chemosensory proteins in insects: structural insights, functional plasticity, and prospects for targeted pest management.

Odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) and chemosensory proteins (CSPs) are integral to the chemical communication systems of insects, mediating the detection, transport, and discrimination of hydrophobic ligands such as pheromones, odorants, and xenobiotics. While OBPs are largely confined to olfactory tissues and exhibit high structural specificity-with six conserved cysteines forming three disulfide bridges-CSPs are structurally simpler, featuring four conserved cysteines and two disulfide bridges, yet display remarkable conformational plasticity and functional versatility. Recent evidence undersc

Gamma and X-ray radiation on mating and sperm transfer in sterile Anastrepha ludens (Diptera: Tephritidae).

Ionizing radiation is widely used in insect sterilization for pest control using the Sterile Insect Technique, which consists of the mass rearing of insects and their irradiation with gamma rays to release them in target areas where they will mate with wild females. However, there is a concern and controversy about the nuclear origin applied in this technique. One alternative for sterilization is the use of X-rays, which do not have a nuclear origin, are easier to operate, and do not generate radioactive waste. Here, we compared the sexual competitiveness of Mexican fruit fly, Anastrepha luden
