Predictor variables of happiness and its connection with risk and protective factors for health.

Great thinkers, philosophers, scientists, and artists from History have often been concerned about one of the most important elements of life: happiness. The study had four goals: (1) To analyze possible differences in feelings of happiness as a function of sex and age; (2) To explore the relations of happiness with risk factors (psychopathological symptoms, behavior problems) and protective factors (self-concept-self-esteem, cooperative behavior, social skills) for health; (3) To identify predictor variables of happiness; and (4) To explore whether self-esteem mediates the relationship betwee

Violence in adulthood and mental health: gender and immigrant status.

The aim of this study was to describe perceived abuse in adult Spanish and Ecuadorian women and men and to assess its association with mental health. A population-based survey was conducted in Spain in 2006. Data were taken from a probabilistic sample allowing for an equal number of men and women, Spaniards and Ecuadorians. Mental disorder was measured with the General Health Questionnaire-28. The nine questions on exposure to physical, sexual, and psychological abuse during the previous year were self-administered. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the association between ex

Unsubscribe, pleeezz!!!: management and training of media competence in computer-mediated communication.

Computer-mediated communication (CMC) has created a new communication divide. Mostly, this division is due to technical and access problems. … veal that help-seeking CMC users with low media-specific competence experience setbacks in terms of interpersonal relations and information gathering. There is a spiral of neutral to negative reactions and an increase in stress and aggression-related language in the reaction of the addressed peers. From the perspective of external raters, we found a contraintuitive resul …

An 8-year study of multiple influences on drug use and drug use consequences.

Multiple long-term influences on young adult drug use and abuse were tested within an interactionist perspective using latent-variable causal models. Intrapersonal influences included early drug use and social conformity. Proximal interpersonal influences were captured by perceived peer drug use, perceived adult drug use, and family disruption. More distal influences included perceptions of community approval or disapproval for drug use. Outcome measures included not only use of drugs but also disruptive drug use (getting high at work or school) and self-admitted problems with drugs. Data were

Acting together beyond synchrony: Event-dependent alignment of breathing in an expert musical ensemble.

Joint musical performance is a paradigmatic form of joint action, requiring multiple performers to coordinate their actions toward a shared goal across differentiated roles. Physiological synchrony and related forms of coupling have been examined as correlates or supporting processes of such coordination. The present study investigated interpersonal breathing dynamics in nagauta-bayashi, a traditional Japanese musical ensemble characterized by long intervals between structurally defined musical events, differentiated instrumental and functional roles, and the absence of a conductor. Respirator

When distress meets disability: social connectedness buffers functional impairment in university students.

Higher education exposes students with disabilities to elevated psychological demands that can impair their health-related functioning and well-being. However, the extent to which interpersonal socio-emotional support and perceived youth social embeddedness operate as protective resources in this population, particularly in China, remains insufficiently understood. This study assessed the direct effects of internalizing symptoms, youth anxiety symptoms, and perceived stress burden on youth health-related functioning and well-being. It further examined whether interpersonal socio-emotional supp

Interpersonal Trauma, Marginalization, and Low-Resource Settings: Understanding Sexual and Gender Minority People's Help-Seeking and Service Utilization Experiences.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) people disproportionately experience interpersonal trauma and face significant barriers to affirmative support. This mixed-methods study explored help-seeking and care utilization among 55 SGM people who experienced sexual assault, intimate partner violence, or childhood maltreatment and lived in low-resource areas across New York State (Mage=30.47; SD=9.83; 70.9% cisgender women; 27.3% people of color; 29.1% annual income ≤$9,999). Childhood Maltreatment and Amygdala Response to Interpersonal Threat in a Transdiagnostic Adult Sample: The Role of Trait Dissociation.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) confers risk for different mental disorders as well as transdiagnostic symptoms such as dissociation. Aberrant amygdala response to interpersonal threat may link CM to transdiagnostic psychopathology and has recently been shown to depend on type and developmental timing of CM experiences. Still, most studies on CM and threat-related amygdala response employ categorical disorder-specific perspectives and fail to consider type and timing of CM exposure. We aimed to investigate associations between CM, amygdala response to interpersonal threat, and dimensio

From Subjective Impression to Objective Measure: The Nonverbal Foundations of the Praecox Feeling.

INTRODUCTION: The praecox feeling (PF) refers to clinicians' immediate sense of disturbed interpersonal contact when encountering individuals with schizophrenia. Although considered subjective, this experience persists in clinical practice through the PANSS poor rapport item, used as an indirect operational proxy. The behavioral substrates underlying this judgment remain insufficiently specified. We examined whether objectively quantified gestural behavior during first contact relates to clinician-rated poor rapport and whether interaction partners (IPs) adapt their nonverbal behavior accordin

The Characteristics and Circumstances of Fatal Interpersonal Strangulation in Australian Adults.

Strangulation involves the application of force to the neck to restrict blood flow or breathing. It is often utilized in both homicides and non-fatal incidences of coercive control, interpersonal altercations, and sexual assaults. The intention of this study was to provide a comprehensive understanding of interpersonal fatal strangulation in Australian adults through the documentation and analysis of characteristics and circumstances involved in these fatalities. Currently, there is limited research within this field in Australia leading to a medico-legal knowledge deficit that needs to be rec

Hostile attributional bias in severe alcohol use disorder.

Impairments in social cognition have been documented in severe alcohol use disorder (SAUD) over the past two decades. They have been linked with lower social functioning and poor treatment outcomes, illustrating their key role in the disorder. However, studies investigating social cognition in SAUD have largely focused on emotional decoding and theory of mind abilities, neglecting other important processes. We expand this line of research by exploring the association between SAUD and hostile attributional biases (i.e., the tendency to attribute hostile intentions to others), another clinically

Neural alpha oscillations index the balance between self-other integration and segregation in real-time joint action.

Shared knowledge and interpersonal coordination are prerequisites for most forms of social behavior. Influential approaches to joint action have conceptualized these capacities in relation to the separate constructs of co-representation (knowledge) and self-other entrainment (coordination). Here we investigated how brain mechanisms involved in co-representation and entrainment interact to support joint action. To do so, we used a musical joint action paradigm to show that the neural mechanisms underlying co-representation and self-other entrainment are linked via a process - indexed by EEG alp

Convergence and divergence among trust-related indicators in a large, predominantly young Chinese online sample.

Trust is an important psychological and social resource for interpersonal cooperation and societal functioning. However, measures commonly used to assess trust may capture related yet non-interchangeable constructs. Using an exploratory cross-sectional design, this study examined the response patterns, convergence and divergence, and selected demographic and regional correlates of multiple trust-related indicators in a large online sample of predominantly young Chinese adults. Participants were recruited through university networks and the questionnaire Star platform. After quality control, 51

Who plays a more crucial role in adolescent well-being: Interactions with parents or peers? An investigation of adolescents aged 10 to 18 years.

Adolescence is a critical period during which interactions with parents and peers play key roles in shaping mental well-being, yet there is ongoing debate regarding their relative importance. To address this gap, this research examines the relationships among communication with parents, social interactions with peers, and adolescents' mental well-being using data from 33,824 Chinese adolescents (ages 10-18 years, Mage = 13.55, 47.43% female) across three data collection waves. A random intercepts cross-lagged panel model (RI-CLPM) was combined with local structural equation modeling (LSEM) to

"Children will Love Like You Do": How Adolescents' Relationships with Parents Predict the Quality of Best Friendships and Romantic Relations.

Despite valuable insights into the predictors of high-quality romantic relationships, research has yet to examine the mediating role of peer relationship characteristics in linking parent-adolescent relationship quality to romantic relationship quality. In two longitudinal studies, the present research tested whether adolescents' relationship quality with best friends mediates the associations between relationship quality with mothers or fathers and relationship quality with romantic partners. In Study 1, 164 adolescents in early to middle adolescence (Mage = 13.76, SD = 0.87; 64% female; 91.5

'A ward full of emotional, aggressive people': Social climate and interpersonal relationships in forensic settings caring for patients with borderline personality disorder.

Therapeutic relationships play a central role in maintaining a positive social climate in forensic settings. The interpersonal difficulties characteristic of Borderline Personality Disorder, alongside the secure environment of forensic wards, can make developing positive therapeutic relationships with this patient group challenging. Qualitative interviews aimed to explore how ward staff understand and experience the interaction of interpersonal relationships and social climate when caring for patients with Borderline Personality Disorder on forensic wards. Interviews with 11 staff members work…
