Effectiveness of a working memory intervention program in children with language disorders.

The aim of this study was twofold: first, to obtain a neuropsychological characterization of children with language disorders, and second, to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention program on working memory. We used a pretest-instruction-posttest design, carefully identifying a sample of 32 children with language disorders whom we then evaluated for short-term verbal and visuospatial memory, verbal and visuospatial working memory, attention, processing speed, and lexical-semantic skills. We then implemented an intervention program on working memory consisting of 72 sessions of 15 minute…

The Romani Minority, Coercive Sterilization, and Languages of Denial in the Czech Lands.

Sterilizations of Romani women in socialist Czechoslovakia, either carried out without proper consent, or coerced through substantial financ … concepts of phenomenology; after the transition to democracy, a more psychological and therapeutic language came to the fore. I argue that the Czech case suggests that the historiography of denial and disavowal could be enriched by looking beyond the framework of psychoanalysis: by taking into account how historical actors, sometimes with opposing worldvi …

Oral language deficits in familial dyslexia: A meta-analysis and review.

This article reviews 95 publications (based on 21 independent samples) that have examined children at family risk of reading disorders. We report that children at family risk of dyslexia experience delayed language development as infants and toddlers. In the preschool period, they have significant difficulties in phonological processes as well as with broader language skills and in acquiring the foundations of decoding skill (letter knowledge, phonological awareness and rapid automatized naming [RAN]). Findings are mixed with regard to auditory and visual perception: they do not appear subject…

Effects of tonal language background on tests of temporal sequencing in children.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of the present study were to determine the effects of language background on the performance of the pitch pattern sequence test (PPST) and duration pattern sequence test (DPST). As temporal order sequencing may be affected by age and working memory, these factors were also studied. DESIGN: Performance of tonal and non-tonal language speakers on PPST and DPST were compared. STUDY SAMPLE: Twenty-eight native Mandarin (tonal language) speakers and twenty-nine native Malay (non-tonal language) speakers between seven to nine years old participated in this study. RESULTS: The …

Narrative competence in children with pragmatic language impairment: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Children with pragmatic language impairment (PLI) show impairments in the use of language in social contexts. Although the issue has been gaining attention in recent literature, not much is known about the developmental trajectories of children who experience pragmatic language problems. Since narrative competence is an important predictor of both academic and social success, evaluating narrative competence in children with PLI is deemed important. AIMS: To examine the development of narrative competence of children with PLI compared with typically developing (TD) children using a…

The Wernicke conundrum and the anatomy of language comprehension in primary progressive aphasia.

Wernicke's aphasia is characterized by severe word and sentence comprehension impairments. The location of the underlying lesion site, known as Wernicke's area, remains controversial. Questions related to this controversy were addressed in 72 patients with primary progressive aphasia who collectively displayed a wide spectrum of cortical atrophy sites and language impairment patterns. Clinico-anatomical correlations were explored at the individual and group levels. These analyses showed that neuronal loss in temporoparietal areas, traditionally included within Wernicke's area, leave single wor…

Early intervention for toddlers with language delays: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Early interventions for toddlers with expressive and receptive language delays have not resulted in positive expressive language outcomes. This randomized controlled trial tested the effects on language outcomes of a caregiver-implemented communication intervention targeting toddlers at risk for persistent language delays. METHODS: Participants included 97 toddlers, who were between 24 and 42 months with language scores at least 1.33 SDs below the normative mean and no other developmental delays, and their caregivers. Toddlers were randomly assigned to the caregiver-implemented int…

The contribution of language to the right-hemisphere conceptual representations: a selective survey.

Although levels of verbal and pictorial performance are known to depend on the degree of left versus right atrophy in the early stages of semantic dementia, the nature of these differences remains controversial. It has been proposed that there is a unitary, bilaterally represented, abstract semantic system and that differential task performance reflects the impact of greater connectivity between the left anterior temporal lobe (ATL) and the left dominant language systems. This interpretation explains the greater involvement of the left ATL in verbally coded semantic knowledge, but not the prev…

Reliability and validity of the CogState battery Chinese language version in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment in patients with schizophrenia is a core symptom of this disease. The computerized CogState Battery (CSB) has been used to detect seven of the most common cognitive domains in schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the CSB (CSB-C), in Chinese patients with schizophrenia. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Sixty Chinese patients with schizophrenia and 58 age, sex, and education matched healthy controls were enrolled. All subjects completed the CSB-C and the Repeated Battery for the Assessment of N

Theory of Mind, Language and Adaptive Functioning in ASD: A Neuroconstructivist Perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroconstructivist theories of development highlight the potential effect one developmental domain may have on constraining or facilitating another. Empirical validation of this theory requires further testing in autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and may illuminate the complex interplay of developmental trajectories, particularly in the relationship between predictor and outcome variables. In ASD, language ability is an early predictor of important functional outcomes such as communication and socialization. We aimed to investigate whether theory of mind (ToM) mediates the relati…

Putative miRNAs for the diagnosis of dyslexia, dyspraxia, and specific language impairment.

Disorders of human communication abilities can be classified into speech and language disorders. Speech disorders (e.g., dyspraxia) affect the sound generation and sequencing, while language disorders (e.g., dyslexia and specific language impairment, or SLI) are deficits in the encoding and decoding of language according to its rules (reading, spelling, grammar). The diagnosis of such disorders is often complicated, especially when a patient presents more than one disorder at the same time. The present review focuses on these challenges. We have combined data available from the literature with…

Ethical issues in states of impaired communication with intact consciousness and language.

Acute and chronic peripheral and/or central disorders of the voluntary motor system can produce profound paresis or paralysis, at times with ophthalmoplegia, while preserving consciousness and language function. Although at times appearing to be unconscious, these patients are awake and alert but unable to communicate, manipulate their environment, or participate in medical decision-making. Clinicians caring for these patients are ethically tasked with recognizing this clinical reality, enacting measures to facilitate communication, and abiding by ethical and legal principles that support auto…

[Understand the neurodevelopment of language: a necessity to prevent learning disabilities in children].

Clinical and radiological knowledge of language development in the former premature infant compared to the newborn allows us to argue for exploration of the sensorimotor co-factors required for proper language development. There are early representations of the maternal language in the infant's visual, auditory, and sensorimotor areas, activated or stabilized by orofacial and articulatory movements. The functional architecture of language is different for vulnerable children such as premature infants. We have already mentioned the impact of early dysfunction of the facial praxis fine motor ski…

Narrative abilities, memory and attention in children with a specific language impairment.

BACKGROUND: While narrative tasks have proven to be valid measures for detecting language disorders, measuring communicative skills and predicting future academic performance, research into the comparability of different narrative tasks has shown that outcomes are dependent on the type of task used. Although many of the studies detecting task differences touch upon the fact that tasks place differential demands on cognitive abilities like auditory attention and memory, few studies have related specific narrative tasks to these cognitive abilities. Examining this relation is especially warrante…

Acoustic markers associated with impairment in language processing in Alzheimer's Disease.

This study broaches in a novel way the analysis of cognitive impairment characteristic of the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Specifically, we attempt to determine the acoustic speech parameters that are sensitive to the onset of the disease, and their association with the language deficit characteristic of AD. Speech analysis was carried out on 21 elderly patients with AD using Praat software, which analyzes the acoustic components of speech. The data obtained were subjected to stepwise regression, using the overall scores obtained in the test as the criterion variable, and the scor…

Stroke: has speech and language therapy been shown not to work?

In a recent trial investigating the effectiveness of speech and language therapy versus a control intervention in poststroke aphasia, patient outcome improved equally in both groups. However, flaws in the study relating to design of the control intervention, inadequate therapy 'dose', and the interpretation of null results should be highlighted.

Early language and behavioral regulation skills as predictors of social outcomes.

PURPOSE: In the present study, the authors examined the prospective associations among early language skills, behavioral regulation skills, and 2 aspects of school-age social functioning (adaptability and social skills). METHOD: The study sample consisted of children with and without a familial risk for dyslexia. The authors analyzed the relations among children's language (at age 2;6 [years;months] and age 5;0), behavioral regulation skills (at age 5;0), and social functioning (at age 8;0) using structural equation modeling. Subgroups of children with respect to language and behavioral regul…

The neurocognitive assessment of Hispanic English-language learners with reading failure.

This study examined the performance of referred Hispanic English-language learners (N = 40) on the English and Spanish versions of the Cognitive Assessment System (CAS; Naglieri & Das, 1997 ). The CAS measures basic neuropsychological processes based on the Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, and Successive (PASS) theory (Naglieri & Das, 1997 ; Naglieri & Otero, 2011c). Full Scale (FS) scores as well as PASS processing scale scores were compared, and no significant differences were found in FS scores or in any of the PASS processes. The CAS FS scores on the English (M = 86.4, SD = 8.73) and Spa…
