[Magnesium: therapeutic usefulness in emergency situations].

Magnesium has been a forgotten cation from the therapeutical point of view, given that, although its properties began to be known more than a century ago, its use has been always empirical or isolated. With respect to its use in emergency situations, in addition to correcting its deficit and using it for the treatment of hypercalcemia and hypopotassemia, it is currently recommended as the therapy of choice for the treatment and prevention of several arrhythmias. It can also be used to prevent its deficit, when such deficit is pathological or associated to the ingestion or certain drugs. Given

Effects of magnesium on skeletal metabolism.

Magnesium (Mg) makes up 0.5-1% of bone ash and is therefore not a trace element in the skeleton. Mg influences both mineral and matrix metabolism in bone by a combination of effects on hormones and other factors that regulate skeletal and mineral metabolism, and by direct effects on bone itself. The skeletal content of Mg is very variable both between and within species, and reported values range between 150 and 440 mmol/kg ash weight (AW). Dietary Mg has a direct influence and age an inverse influence on skeletal Mg content. It is unclear whether skeletal Mg content varies from region to regi

Recommended dietary amounts of magnesium: Mg RDA.

In developed countries, the recommended dietary amounts of magnesium have been set at 6 mg/kg day. The magnesium requirements for optimal he … o balance studies in determining the magnesium intake which prevents negative magnesium balance and magnesium deficiency. Marginal primary magnesium deficit affects a large proportion of the population (15 to 20%), in keeping with a daily mean magnesium intake slightly over 4 mg/kg day versus the Mg RDA of 6 mg/kg day. A physiological oral magnesium load test, evaluat …

Recent data on mitral valve prolapse and magnesium deficit.

Idiopathic mitral valve prolapse (IMVP) is a widespread disease. IMVP may be latent, but most patients describe a great variety of symptoms. The clinical pictures of IMVP and of latent tetany are superimposed with regard to Mg deficit. IMVP appears as a late complication of latent tetany due to magnesium deficit (LTMD). The Mg deficit has various causes: insufficient Mg intake (especially during slimming diets), and depletion of Mg provoked by stress, coffee excess, corticosteroids or catecholamine excess. The high prevalence in women is mainly due to the ovarian hormones. Constitutional facto

On the reliability of the magnesium serum value as an indicator of body magnesium status.

The interrelationships between serum Mg and HCR, and between serum Mg and K were investigated in pigs fed on a low Mg diet. A positive dependence was found between serum Mg and HCR, and between serum Mg and K. It was concluded, that in Mg-deficient pigs, Mg ions originating from soft tissues or erythrocytes can cause an increase of serum Mg level. The serum Mg value, consequently, can not be considered as a reliable parameter indicating the body Mg status. Some difficulties in diagnosing the body Mg status and the effects of the spontaneous increase of serum Mg level on Mg deficiency symptoms

Magnesium and COVID-19 - Some Further Comments - A Commentary on Wallace TC. Combating COVID-19 and Building Immune Resilience: A Potential Role for Magnesium Nutrition? J Am Coll Nutr. 2020;1-9. doi:10.1080/07315724.2020.1785971. Cited in: PMID: 32649272.

The paper "Combating COVID-19 and Building Immune Resilience: A Potential Role for Magnesium Nutrition?" by TC Wallace, which was published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition highlights the importance of adequate magnesium (Mg) supply in relation to COVID-19. Wallace notes that Mg deficiency is associated with low-grade chronic inflammation. Furthermore, hypokalemia and a lack of active Vitamin D are consequences of a Mg deficit. In this way, Mg deficiency may exacerbate the course of COVID-19. Therefore, in patients with Covid-19 permanent monitoring of the Mg status and, if
