Odontomas are odontogenic tumors that usually present as benign lesions. They are easily diagnosed and affect individuals in their first and second decades of life. In most cases, odontomas are asymptomatic and the presence could be suspected due to the delay in tooth eruption or via routine radiographic examinations. Treatment of choice has been surgical removal of the lesion, and prognosis is usually favorable because of its benign characteristics and rare recurrence. The purpose of this study is to report the case of a complex odontoma in a child impacting a permanent molar and preventing i

The calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC), first identified as a separate and distinct lesion by Gorlin et al. in 1962, is an uncommon benign lesion, consisting of a proliferation of odontogenic epithelium and scattered nests of ghost cells and calcifications that may form the lining of a cyst or present as a solid mass. The COC occurs alone or occasionally with odontomas or other odontogenic tumors, and it is this variable histology and clinical behavior that has raised the question of whether or not it is a cyst or a true neoplasm. The odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a locally aggressive odontog

An 11-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat was presented with an epulis. A hemispherical mass, 8mm in maximum diameter, without a peduncle and bright reddish in colour, was observed on the gingiva of the left mandible. Radiography failed to show any infiltrating osteolysis. The epulis was surgically removed via gingival incision around the margin to the depth of connective tissue layer. Histopathological examination indicated that the epulis contained a large number of multinucleated giant cells (MGCs) intermixed with mononuclear mesenchymal cells in a loose fibrovascular stroma. PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of bisphosphosnate alendronate (ALD) and metotrexate (MTX) on an experimental model of Walker 256 carcinosarcoma developed in the oral cavity of rats. METHODS Walker 256 carcinosarcoma cell suspension (0,1 mL) containing 10(6) cell/mL was implanted in the alveoli of the first and second molars. The animals were divided and treated with saline, MTX, ALD, and MTX plus ALD. Later, the animals were sacrificed, the tumors were measured and the mandibles were removed for radiographic and histological analysis.
RESULTS: In the control group, the radiographic image

A 38-year-old man was referred by his dental surgeon with a painful swelling in the right mandibular sulcus and an ipsilateral numb lip. Dental infection secondary to caries was initially diagnosed but biopsy revealed this to be a Burkitt's lymphoma. After intense chemotherapy, the patient is still in remission three years later. This case is a reminder that malignancy should always be high on a clinician's list of differential diagnoses of jaw swelling associated with neurological abnormalities and prompt referral is essential.

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of dental patients are taking bisphosphonate medications for a variety of indications. These drugs may be associated with poor healing, spontaneous intraoral ulceration and bone necrosis in the oral and maxillofacial region.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors describe a case of osteonecroSis of the jaws in a patient receiving long-term bisphosphonate therapy for cancer. They offer recommendations for management and prevention of oral complications.
CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: It is important that clinicians are aware of the association between bisphosphona

The major problems in dealing with established mandibular loss are severe soft-tissue contracture and a limited number of recipient vessels. The skin portion of the iliac osteocutaneous flap often necrotizes in cases without perforators of the deep circumflex iliac vessel. To overcome these problems, eight patients with established mandibular loss and no skin perforators of the deep circumflex iliac vessel were treated with a sequential vascularized iliac bone graft and a superficial circumflex iliac perforator flap with a single recipient vessel. Regarding the recipient vessels, the ipsilater

The fibula was investigated as a donor site for free-flap mandible reconstruction. It has the advantages of consistent shape, ample length, distant location to allow a two-team approach, and low donor-site morbidity. It can be raised with a skin island for composite-tissue reconstruction. Twelve segmental mandibular defects (average 13.5 cm) were reconstructed following resection for tumor, most commonly epidermoid carcinoma. Five defects consisted of bone alone, and four others had only a small amount of associated intraoral soft-tissue loss. Eleven patients underwent primary reconstructions.

A Grade 3 chondroblastic osteosarcoma is reported in the mandible of a 37-year-old man with longstanding polyostotic fibrous dysplasia. There was also a history of multiple endocrine disturbances including hyperthyroidism, pituitary adenoma, and acromegaly. Malignant transformation of fibrous dysplasia is very rare and occurs most often when the lesion is polyostotic in distribution. The patient received preoperative radiation therapy followed immediately by marginal excision, i.e., left hemimandibulectomy. Forty-two months after initial presentation of the osteosarcoma of the mandible, he is

INTRODUCTION: Metastatic lesions make up approximately 1% of all oral cancers.A comparatively rare location is the temporomandibular joint.Leading symptoms can be misdirecting, especially in the beginning, because they are frequently similar or even identical to those occurring in temporomandibular disorders. Therefore it can be quite difficult to confirm the diagnosis of a TMJ metastasis.delayed initiation of therapy and thus a poor prognosis are often the results.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A review of the literature from 1954 to 2013 was realized and the published cases between 1954 and January

Brown tumors are focal bone lesions caused by increased osteoclastic activity and fibroblastic proliferation encountered in primary or more rarely secondary hyperparathyroidism. Ninety-two percent of the patients undergoing dialysis develop secondary hyperparathyroidism. Of these, approximately 1.5% develops brown tumors. Brown tumors of hyperparathyroidism may appear in any bone but are frequently found in the facial bones and jaws, particularly in long-standing cases of the disease. As it becomes common for hyperparathyroidism to be detected earlier during the disease, the bony manifestation

The term unicystic ameloblastoma refers to those cystic lesions that show clinical, radiographic, or gross features of a jaw cyst, but on histologic examination show a typical ameloblastomatous epithelium lining part of the cyst cavity, with or without luminal and/or mural tumor growth. To ascertain the clinicomorphologic spectrum and biologic behavior of this tumor group, the clinicopathologic features of 33 unicystic ameloblastomas from Chinese patients were studied. This series represents approximately 19% of all cases of ameloblastoma accessioned in the authors' hospital during a 15-year p

Persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus have an increased risk for development of high-grade, non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. Anaplastic large-cell Ki-1 lymphoma is a recently described lymphoid neoplasm characterized by cellular pleomorphism, a sinusoidal growth pattern, and Ki-1 epitope reactivity. This type of lymphoma is often mistaken for metastatic carcinoma, melanoma, or malignant histiocytosis. Although persons with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome frequently have non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at extranodal sites, the oral cavity and mandible, in particular, are unusual locations. We re

BACKGROUND: Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (BPOP) is benign and usually occurs in the small tubular bones of the hands and feet, but it is extremely rare in the oral and maxillofacial region.
METHODS: The present study compares a case of BPOP occurring in the lingual area of the right mandibular body with a representative case of osteochondroma occurring in the left mandibular condyle using immunohistochemical methods.
RESULTS: BPOP showed no continuity to the cortical bone of the mandible on X-ray and was histologically composed of immature cartilage and bone tissues, wh

The authors report the occurrence of multiple odontogenic tumors in a father, his two sons, and his daughter. These occurred soon after birth and recurred upon occasion, with imcomplete removal. Associated with the multiple odontomas is esophageal stenosis. The occurrence of hepatopathy of unknown origin and an increased susceptibility to infection appear to be other components in this syndrome. A similar case reported in the literature has been cited. Autosomal dominant inheritance is suggested.

OBJECTIVE: Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) techniques are increasingly applied to mandibular reconstruction, but the superiority of this method in oral food intake has not been well established. Considering the extent of mandibular defects, this retrospective study was aimed to clarify the impact of CAD/CAM mandibular reconstruction on chewing and swallowing function after surgery for locally advanced oral cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 50 patients who had undergone segmental mandibulectomy with free flap reconstruction f

PURPOSE: The authors describe an intraoral approach to accessing the mandibular condyle using endoscopy combined with a navigation system and explore the feasibility of this technique for the precise excision of a benign tumor in the condyle.
METHODS: The junction between the osteochondroma and the condyle was recognized and defined as the osteotomy line in a CT-based surgery planning software, and the surgical plan was then exported to a navigation system. A 4-mm-diameter 30-degree endoscope was placed in the wound with direct access to the entire condyle. Based on constant feedback from the

OBJECTIVES: To measure the prevalence of disease of mandibular third molars referred for removal and to estimate the risk for development of pathoses for two cues.
STUDY DESIGN: A prospective cohort study on molars subjected to removal was performed. The prevalence of different diseases and the patient's age, angular position, and degree of impaction of the molars were registered. Odds ratio for molars with different positions and impaction states were estimated.
RESULTS: Pericoronitis was found in 64% of cases, caries in the third molar in 31%, periodontitis in association with 8%, caries i
